Page 13—www.duxburyseniorcenter.org Veterans News April, 2022 Unfortunately, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is backlogged with claims. As of midJanuary, there were around 260k claims in process for more than 125 days. The VA is committed to reduce this backlog by adding over 4,000 claim reviewers and through enhanced automation. The VA is paying overtime to speed the decision process. The VA is active with its review of burn pit victims from the Gulf Wars. The VA has granted some presumptive benefits for the first time. Veterans with rhinitis, asthma and sinusitis who served after September, 2011 are in the zone for presumptive benefits. If this is you, please apply. Congressional leadership dropped language adding women to the Selective Service System. When a Veteran is recovering from surgery or disability related to their military service that has left them immobilized, they may be eligible for a temporary 100% disability rating. You had to have surgery in a VA hospital or an approved facility outside the VA. Your recovery time must be at least one month and the post hospital reports must show that the treatment was for a serviceconnected disability. Also, the surgery resulted in issues like surgical wounds have not totally healed, stumps on recent amputations or being unable to move due to splints or casts. You must file a claim. If a Veteran cannot work because of a serviceconnected disability they may qualify for Individual Unemployability. To qualify two requirements must be true. First, you have at least one serviceconnected disability rated at 60% or more, or two or more serviceconnected disabilities with at least one rated 40% or more and a combined rating of 70% or more. Your claim and documentation must show your disability prevents you from working. The Veterans Legal Clinic at the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School is offering free estate planning (wills, trusts etc.) services for lower income Veterans living in Massachusetts. Their phone is: 6173902525 In a recent multicenter study comparing diabetes care between VA and nonVA sites, it was determined that care was better managed within the VA. Blood donations are needed by the VA to support the shortage caused by COVID. “Roll up your sleeve 2022” is in place along with help from the Red Cross. Call or visit any Red Cross blood collection site. If you have questions about the benefits you have earned from your military service, please contact the Duxbury Veterans’ Service Officer at 7819345774 X 5740.
