SPECIAL EVENTS FOR WINTER MASON JAR HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST Create a holiday-themed mason jar. Decorate it with your favorite holiday theme - get creative! Your jar can be decorated inside (like a snow globe) or on the outside. Mason jars will be displayed at the Newtown Community Center for judging. All completed mason jars need to be dropped off by December 14. Winner will receive a gift basket. Winner will be announced on December 21. Mason Jars will be provided by Newtown Parks and Recreation - stop by our office to pick one up (choice of 16 oz or 32 oz). We are open Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm. This is a wonderful activity for the whole family! WINTER BREAK PROGRAMS - DECEMBER WINTER WONDERLAND ENGINEERING WITH LEGO (AGES 5-10) Bundle up, we’re creating a spectacular Winter Wonderland! Build bobsleds, design snow plows and take a ride on the Polar Express. Explore your snowiest ideas and learn STEM concepts with tens of thousands of LEGO pieces at your mitten-tips and with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor. Get ready to put your mind in motion as you work with and take home your very own Bridges and Skyscrapers Set! Learn all about basic structural elements and witness firsthand the forces acting on structural components. With your kit, you can build up to 20 model building experiments that each demonstrate a basic principle of mechanical physics or structural engineering in a hands-on way. Learn about the strength of materials as you compete with your classmates to see who can build the tallest tower using the pieces in this kit. Challenge yourself building different types of bridges such a suspension bridge or cable stayed bridge. This smart undercover robotics kit will entertain and teach infra-red capabilities to inquisitive minds. It consists of 140 assembly pieces and is equipped with an infrared radar so it can capture its surrounding conditions. A classified press-button switch instructs your Agent992 Robot to transform into 3 investigative modes: Forward mode, Gesture Control mode and Auto Navigation mode. Forward mode executes basic forward direction where its eyes turn red. Use your the forward and backward motion of your hands to guide your robot when Gesture Control mode is activated, and its eyes turn blue. Compete with your classmates by designing obstacles or maze courses. AFFINITY ESPORTS Gaming & Related Skills We Are Affinity Esports and we are on a mission to create safe spaces for happier and healthier gaming experiences. Through our recreational programs, your children are introduced to the world of Esports, full of new and emerging career paths, experiential learning, and highly engaging social activities. Each of these programs has been structured to reinforce critical life skills, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving. Through their time with us, we will guide your children to build healthy habits and harness their passion with an extreme commitment to balancing wellness, education, mentality, competition, and socialization. Esports have been linked to powerful outcomes, such as improved social and emotional skills, problem solving, future career viability and academic performance. Mark Kilpatrick, Instructor & Founder Mark’s background and experience, which has guided this initiative, includes years of counseling and coaching at Northwest Soccer Camp, Coaching AYSO, time as a Collegiate Ambassador, and Resident Assistant. Mark is a lifelong gamer and advocate of the benefits that healthy gaming can deliver. Expert coaches and recreational supervisors from high school and college programs assist Mark with developing game fundamentals. AFFINITY ESPORTS: Gaming & Related Skills INTRO TO TEAM BUILDING & SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN ESPORTS (AGES 7-13) With this class, participants will get to experience playing various “E for Everyone” rated games (Minecraft, Rocket League, Knockout City, Fall Guys, Super Smash Bros, and Mario Kart) in a social, team-based setting. Students will have the opportunity to learn about these games and the booming Esports industry, while focusing on a skill of the day (such as character, teamwork, communication, problem solving or leadership). Participants will also have the opportunity to see our production and competition room to experience how the next level of Esports competition looks and feels. This course is designed to spark passion and interest by exposing each child to a wide range of games, activities, and opportunities, while also focusing on an extreme commitment to balance, health and wellness, and basic internet safety. ARTS & MORE: Knitting/Gardening/Woodworking ADULT KNITTING CIRCLE: INTERMEDIATE + (AGES 18 & UP) For those who can cast on and knit garter stitch, and are ready to build more skills (or have completed the beginner course). For intermediate students, projects will be created starting with an “oh-so-cute!” hat that can be made in sizes from children to adults, as well as a seamless project ”knitting in the round” on circular needles. In this comprehensive, step-by-step, fun class, you’ll learn to read patterns, check gauge, master more difficult stitches (including cables) and more. • Students need to bring in size 10 (longer length, preferably) straight needles and one skein (150 yards) of worsted weight yarn of their choice to start. Other materials needed for additional projects are discussed in class. Advanced projects are available and students can bring independent projects for help and instruction, as well. • No food or beverages (other than water) are permitted in the classroom.
