Northbound traffic on I-75, use exit 136; southbound traffic on I-75, use exit 144. Directions to the Lodge from anywhere in the United States are located at www.bavarianinn.com. THE SHOW SITE . . . Our host hotel for the week’s festivities is the picturesque Bavarian Inn Lodge nestled on the banks of the Cass River, adjacent to Heritage Park and the spacious Kern Pavilion. A short scenic walk over the covered bridge leads to Main Street, which is home to over 100 specialty shops and other well-known restaurants. The show rings, grooming, and vendors will be in Heritage Park, the location of the Kern Pavilion, just across a bike path from the hotel. The distance from the Tower Entrance of the hotel (where all dogs must access the hotel) to the show ring in Heritage Park is just slightly over .2 a mile. However, it is important that all fanciers work together, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, to make the logistics of this show site work. Michigan’s climate this time of year can be somewhat unpredictable so come prepared for all kinds of weather. The average high temperature for the week of the 2023 National Specialty is typically 65 degrees and the average low temperature is typically 40 degrees. AIR TRAVEL & AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION . . . Draft Tests #1 & #2 ACCOMODATIONS BE A CONSIDERATE GUEST . . . In 2001, the Newfoundland National Specialty was the first dog show ever held at the Bavarian Inn Lodge/Heritage Park location. In fact, until that time, animals were not permitted in the hotel. The hotel managers took a chance when they permitted the NCA to hold our Specialty there, and we did not disappoint them. Because our guests took good care of the facilities, the NCA’s positive reputation paved the way for future dog shows of other breed clubs. Please do your part to uphold our reputation as considerate guests. Exercise your dogs in designated areas only and use the plastic bags and trash receptacles provided to facilitate clean up. We need everyone’s help in keeping the hotel rooms and show grounds, including grooming areas, clean. The Newfoundland Club of America and the Bavarian Inn Lodge reserve the right to enter locked hotel rooms if it believes a dog inside is in distress or left unattended and unsecured. HOST HOTEL ROOM RESERVATIONS . . . We have reserved an allotment of hotel rooms at the Bavarian Inn Lodge and three other hotel properties IN FRANKENMUTH, however reservations must be mailed and may not be postmarked prior to January 10, 2023 to ensure a first come, first served policy on rooms. Reservations by phone, fax or other electronic means will not be accepted by the hotel. Reservations postmarked prior to January 10, 2023 will be returned. Reservations must be made on the reservation Form on pages 14 - 16 and include a deposit of one night’s lodging. The reservation form may be duplicated as needed for multiple rooms. Please be considerate when making reservations. Every year unneeded reservations are made, only to be cancelled at a later date, creating unnecessary confusion for potential guests and the hotel staff. If you must cancel reservations, please do so as early as possible. Any reservation cancellations must occur on or before February 15, 2023 to receive a full refund. RV CAMPING ON-SITE CAMPING . . . Frankenmuth city ordinances prohibit overnight camping except in commercial campgrounds. However, the City of Frankenmuth has again waived its “no overnight camping” rule for our 2023 Specialty and will permit a maximum of 20 self-contained RVs (motor homes and camping trailers only; no tents or pop-ups) to camp on-site in a designated area. The designated area is conveniently located behind the Kern Pavilion. There will be no electric hook-ups but a water source and a dump station are available nearby. The limited number of on-site camping spaces must be reserved for the entire week (Monday, May 1st —Saturday, May 6th) at a cost of $500. In the event the designated camping area becomes unusable due to weather conditions, the camping fee will be refunded and RVs must move to a commercial campground as the City of Frankenmuth will not permit camping in any other area of the show grounds. To reserve an on-site camping space, complete the RV Reservation Form on page 19. Reservations for on-site camping will be accepted beginning with a January 10, 2023 postmark. Deadline: February 15, 2023 or earlier when available spots are filled. No refunds will be given after April 1, 2023 unless the spot is filled from a waiting list. Contact: Chuck Ialungo. 4

Please be respectful of any barricaded areas. DAYTIME RV PARKING . . . For those camping in one of the commercial campgrounds and wishing to drive their RV to the show each day, a paved hotel parking lot south of the main Bavarian Inn Lodge entrance, will be reserved for daytime RV parking. Please register so the committee may plan accordingly. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant DVM, PhD, DABVT, DABT Dr. Gwaltney-Brant was a “military brat” who moved extensively with her family before landing in North Carolina where she received her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from North Carolina State University. After 3 years in private small animal and emergency veterinary practice, Dr. Gwaltney-Brant entered a veterinary pathology residency program at Kansas State University, where she earned a PhD in veterinary pathology. After completing a post-doctoral program at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, IA, Dr. Gwaltney-Brant joined the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana IL, ultimately becoming vice president and medical director. During this time, Dr. Gwaltney-Brant obtained board certification in general toxicology (DABT) and veterinary toxicology (DABVT). After over 13 years at the ASPCA, Dr. Gwaltney- Brant subsequently joined Veterinary Information Network (VIN), an online educational and advisory community for veterinarians, where she served as a toxicology consultant, headed development of a veterinary drug formulary for veterinarians, and provided toxicology-related online content for use by veterinarians. Although formerly “retired” from VIN since January 2022, Dr. Gwaltney-Brant continues to serve as a toxicology consultant on the VIN message boards. She holds adjunct faculty positions at the University of Florida and University of Illinois, where she has taught toxicology and forensic toxicology to veterinary students. Dr. Gwaltney-Brant has delivered online continuing education and college credit courses on veterinary and forensic toxicology and has published over 200 journal articles and book chapters on toxicology, pathology, and veterinary forensic science. She has lectured at numerous regional, state, national and international veterinary conferences, and has also lectured to non-veterinary audiences, including dog clubs and civic organizations. Dr. Gwaltney-Brant was introduced to her future husband, Tom Brant, when her Doberman pinscher, KC, fell in love with his Newfoundland, Woodstock, at the Manhattan, KS Kennel Club dog training class. In the ensuing 30+ years, she and Tom have been involved in most aspects of the Newfoundland dog world, particularly working events. Tom, a retired water and draft test judge, does most of the training and title-earning while Sharon takes his finished “ringers” and requalifies them. Sharon has also stewarded for conformation, draft, obedience, rally, and water events. Sharon and Tom are members of the NCA as well as Heart of America and River King Newfoundland Clubs. REGISTRATION: There is no charge for attending, but seating is limited. Sign up by using the Form on page 33 or online @ www.ncanationalspecialty.org. 10
