2 newcomer anniversary 2008 to ’18 – a look back The world of business is diverse. It has given us and you a broad range of exciting topics for issues 1 to 50. The most popular included Europe, the climate and consumer protection. We will continue to focus on such critical issues in the future. Michael Koch, Simone Malz, Gwen Schreiber, Institut für Ökonomische Bildung Oldenburg Climate protection Climate change concerns everyone. Why is that? When the climate changes, our living conditions also change – and this has far-reaching consequences for the economy and how we co-exist on this planet. So, climate protection will remain a major topic. There are many ways this issue could impact our future: driving restrictions, reduced air travel, increasing renewable energies, more sustainable consumption and so much more. Our articles from issues 1 to 49 have shown that these are not easy tasks. Solar power and climate protection conferences We examined climate protection from a variety of angles. Along the way, we have explained why the future of energy will move away from coal, oil and gas and more towards renewable energies such as solar or wind power and what Germany is already doing to achieve this. Major policy decisions and climate protection conferences were also regularly covered. Here, a recurring theme has been the lack of cooperation between governments around the world to enact joint measures for climate protection. Most recently, we reported on the planned withdrawal of the USA from the Paris climate protection agreement at the end of 2017. Where are we today? Much remains to be done regarding climate protection. We will therefore continue to newcomer 08–10/2018 #50 handelsblattmachtschule.de/newcomer cover this topic in future issues of the Handelsblatt Newcomer. One aspect of our coverage will be how we can adapt to the impacts of climate change. We are already feeling the effects of climate change in the form of severe weather events such as major September 2017 heat waves and heavy rains. Issue 45 Foto: iStock | sarkophoto

The euro simplifies holidays abroad, while businesses and consumers benefit in many ways from open borders. But the EU is also constantly changing as many Handelsblatt Newcomer articles from the past ten years have shown. The debt crisis, the euro and Brexit Europe has its fair share of problems – this could be seen in our first issue in November 2008: This was the first time, but certainly Consumer protection not the last, that we covered the financial and economic crisis that wound up leading to a sovereign debt crisis in Greece.
