IN THE NEWS Different Approach, Same Goal With Project Red Ribbon Campaign It was a Project Red Ribbon campaign unlike any other, as Chapters and Community Leaders adapted activities and events to meet local pandemic-related guidelines. But the message still came through loud and clear: drive sober, over the holiday season and all year long. Normally, volunteers would have been out in full force in their communities, handing out red ribbons and red ribbon car decals, participating in holiday events and parades, and so much more. This year, they had to get creative to make sure our red ribbons and the drive sober message reached community members. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who made it happen. Here is just a small snapshot of their activities around the country. (See our Chapter Notebook section starting on Page 9 for more Project Red Ribbon initiatives.) MADD Greater Fredericton sponsored a tree at Pine Grove Nursing Home’s Festival of Lights Drive-Thru fundraiser. Red ribbons were available for anyone to pick up while they drove through the amazing display. MADD Kawartha Lakes & Area launched their Project Red Ribbon campaign in partnership with Peterborough County OPP’s Festive RIDE sobriety checkpoint campaign, using their Campaign 911 sign as an eye-catching backdrop. The number of provincial licence suspensions and federal charges for impaired driving in 2017 were: • Annual total: 81,831 charges/suspensions for the year; • Per 100,000 Canadians: 225 charges/suspensions; • Daily average: 224 charges/suspensions. The new report is titled: Provincial Short-Term Alcohol and Drug-Related Licence Suspensions and Federal Impaired Driving Charges Laid Per Year, Per 100,000 Residents and the Average Per Day, by Jurisdiction: Canada, 2010-2017 While the total rate of provincial sanctions and federal charges has been decreasing over time, the number of people continuing to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs remains very concerning. It should be noted that while some of this decline may be due to a reduction in impaired driving, it is very unlikely that this would account for the entire drop. It is imperative that federal and provincial governments determine the cause of this decline, and take the steps necessary to address it, should it be due to a reduction in enforcement resources.
