Tickets are on sale now. The anniversary programme of events will extend across the entire year, acting as a showcase for Munich to celebrate its architectural, innovation, sports, cultural and music highlights. What’s more, the “Spirit of Contact: Department of Labor and Economic Development München Tourismus, Trade & Media Relations Herzog-Wilhelm-Str. 15, 80331 München, Tel.: +49 89 233-30343 Email: tourismus.mediaservice@muenchen.de, www.simply-munich.com

The 21-kilometre north-south passage offers an abundance of nature and culture experiences at any time of year. Beginning at the BMW Welt building right beside the Olympiazentrum (Olympic Centre) and extending as far as the lake at Hinterbrühl, this route particularly emphasises how green Munich is. Along the way you’ll see magnificent boulevards, world-famous museums and a wealth of architecture and history. If it feels like too far to go in one day, or if you’re just really keen to allow time to linger, you can break the walk down into three stages or alternatively use a rental bike or the local public transport system to complete individual stages. You can use the komoot touring app as a convenient companion for your hike. From spring 2022, guided tours will also be available on this route. So as well as old favourites such as the “Tante Ju” aeroplane, visitors can look forward to exploring lots of new arrivals which bring the wonders of science and technology to life. A giant human body in the Health section is sure to be a particularly striking attraction. The new roof terrace bar, Frau im Mond – which translates as “woman in the moon” – has been designed by the creators of the Flushing Meadows Hotel, and is inspired by the nearby space flight exhibition area. It will offer fantastic views over Munich and the Isar river, which can be experienced by anyone, not just museum visitors. The Deutsches Museum will remain open during construction work. Press contact: presse@deutsches-museum.de Four new culture stages in Munich The opening of four new stages in Munich has been met with much joy. Visitors can look forward to discovering these new settings for theatre, dance, concerts and readings: the Isarphilharmonie at the Gasteig cultural centre’s HP8 site, the new Volkstheater in the Schlachthofviertel district, the schwere reiter theatre in the Kreativquartier (creative quarter) and Hoftheater München in the Stemmerhof, a converted historic farm building. The new temples of culture offer some architectural surprises, successfully combining easy casualness with a real sensitivity to the particular history of each site. Page 3 Freddie Mercury and Queen in Munich It is one of the lesser known facts that Freddie Mercury has lived in Munich for six years and it was here where he celebrated his famous 39th birthday party (at the former discothek Mrs. Henderson) during which the music video to “Living on my own” was shot. It is still one of the most widely watched music video clips with over 100 mio visits. For those wishing to follow Freddie Mercury’s trail in Munich, there are two new options. Firstly MucTours offers regular three hour Freddie Mercury Walking Tours through his favourite quarters. The first of these tours took place on the 30th anniversary of his death on November 24th 2021. The tours are offered on a regular basis in German, and in English upon demand. Secondly there will be a new exhibition for rock fans at the factory plant Pasing (Pasinger Fabrik) from March 17 th to June 25th. The exibition “Queen – A Bohemian Rhapsody” focusses on the legendary band Queen and its singer Freddie Mercury and shows their close connection to Munich. An hommage to Deep Purple is also part of the exhibition. Their song “Smoke on the water” celebrates its 50 th anniversary in 2022. From 1985 to 1988, graffiti was so big in Munich that artists visited from all over the world so they could say they had painted in Munich at least once. Munich is today home to Germany’s first museum for urban art, which is based in a former utilities substation and has now expanded to a brand-new attraction: KUNSTLABOR 2. Situated in the Maxvorstadt district, this temporary project by MUCA spans some 10,000 square metres over six floors. A particularly exciting point for lovers of street art and urban art to note is that two of the six floors have been – and continue to be – transformed into a walk-in work of art by more than 100 artists. Those involved include household names such as Loomit and rapper Samy Deluxe, but also newcomers such as Pepe (alias Jose Luis Villanueva Contreras). Treading the Yellow Staircase is one of the highlights of any visit to the living quarters and staterooms of the Bavarian rulers at the Munich Residenz city palace. The Residenz is the largest palace in any German city centre and is now open to the public as a museum. Stylistically, the evolution over centuries of the Wittelsbach family palace means it embodies a mix of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism. Page 4 Trip up the Rathausturm (Town Hall Tower) – a new viewpoint for Munich Munich has many wonderful elevated scenic viewpoints, and one of the most beautiful is certainly the tower in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), which has been open to visitors since 2020. In just a few seconds the lift delivers you to the top of the 85-metre-tall tower, where you can encounter a different highlight of the city at every turn: Alter Peter church stands directly opposite; Frauenkirche cathedral is on one side of the tower and the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) on the other; the Italianate Theatinerkirche church is visible to the north; and southwards of course, the Alps. Tickets are available online and from the Tourist Information office in the Rathaus. Highlights include the “Barberini Faun” and the “Group of the Aegina”. Together with the Antikensammlungen (antique collection) on the south side of Königsplatz, the Glyptothek boasts one of the world’s most significant collections of Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. It gives a taste of what can be expected in BIOTOPIA Naturkundemuseum Bayern, the future new museum which will emerge following the redesign and extension of the much-loved Museum Mensch und Natur (museum of man and nature). The BIOTOPIA Lab includes a laboratory kitchen and a workshop area, where it hosts biological and environmental science workshops, with special provision for schools and families and a visitor programme open to all, as well as interdisciplinary events. It also contains a flexible exhibition space for a changing programme of pop-up exhibitions such as the upcoming “Fungi for Future”. BIOTOPIA Lab@Home also enables budding scientists to explore the world of science at home by means of interactive experiments and DIY ideas, helping them to make their own scientific discoveries about the natural world through projects such as growing mushrooms or isolating DNA from fruit and vegetables. Alongside many third-generation family-run businesses, there are also a few new, younger faces at the food market, such as 30-year-old master confectioner Lea Zapf, whose Market patisserie opened right in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Her “Luftikus” cream puffs are one of her specialities. Teresa Koblbauer, or Resi as she is known, has been running her regional fruit and vegetable stall, Resi am Markt, since 2020. She even sells ginger grown in Munich, and will soon be offering takeaway meals. The guys at Caspar Plautz are well-known to many. Trained goldsmith Theo and sociologist Dominik have been drawing baked potato fans to their stall in droves for several years now. The area covers a total of 40 hectares, and there is already plenty to experience in the central Werksviertel-Mitte area, which spans some ten hectares. The industrial area at Ostbahnhof was historically used for the processing of potatoes to make knödeln (potato dumplings) and creamed potatoes; today the same area has been transformed into a bustling city district with loft offices, artists’ studios, several live stages, apartments, bars and restaurants. Regular guided tours are a great way to gain an insight into the area. A key location in Werksviertel-Mitte is the orange building which is prominently labelled with WERK3. The Stadtalm, or city meadow, on the roof of the building is a real highlight. Covering around 2,500 square metres, it is home to a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep, several bee colonies and a number of chickens – and it is just one of many sustainability projects in the neighbourhood. The WERK1 building offers low-cost office space for startups, co- working opportunities and normally more than 100 events each year aimed at promoting networking and discussion on the digital founders scene. The site will be used as a temporary location for the Umadum München, Germany’s largest Ferris wheel, until construction of the new Munich concert hall begins there. Street art is also an integral key feature of this neighbourhood. Well-known artist Loomit has been based on the site since 1996 and also works as a local curator. Page 6 New guided tour of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) With its wonderful Glockenspiel mechanical clock, the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) on Marienplatz is one of Munich’s best-known landmarks – but most visitors have only seen it from the outside. As of summer 2021, visitors have been able to also explore inside the neo-Gothic building by booking a guided tour of the Rathaus. As well as giving you the chance to discover its most prestigious spaces and the Rathaus balcony where FC Bayern celebrated its championship win, on the tour you can also view the impressive reading room of the Law Library, which has been used as a setting in a number of films. The latest addition is the 4-star Adina Apartment Hotel Munich, which opened its doors in September 2021. The establishment occupies floors 9 to 24 of the Werk4 building in the Werksviertel-Mitte area, and is currently the city’s tallest hotel at a height of 86 metres. Guests can even expect a view of sheep and chickens from some of its 234 studios and apartments, as the hotel is located right beside the Stadtalm, a nature project on the roof of the adjacent Werk3 building. One cute detail is the room numbers with pictograms that indicate what view can be enjoyed through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The gambino Hotel Werksviertel, with 303 rooms and an unbeatable view of the Umadum Ferris wheel, is just a stone’s throw away. The operators have deliberately decided not to include a restaurant on-site, so that visitors can take advantage of all the services available in the area, and they can – at least temporarily – become part of the Werksviertel community. Autumn 2019 saw the opening of the Moxy lifestyle hotel, a young, innovative boutique hotel with reasonable room rates. The design concept is inspired by motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp, which produced motorcycles in the Werksviertel area for decades. The Residence Inn next door has 75 studios and is particularly aimed at visitors staying in the city for longer periods. Spacious rooms, wardrobes, and kitchenettes with dishwashers, combined with clean design and calming colours create a retreat that feels a long way from the hustle and bustle of the city.
