12 years ago, I made the decision to join the This may come as a shock to you, but I actually RSN as a Naval Diver. Since then, every single day studied Banking and Finance at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. has been an adventure. No other career pays you to It may seem like a huge leap of faith to go from banking to combat diving, but even then, I knew I jump out of a plane from thousands of feet above wanted more than just to sit in front of a computer. ground, shoot sophisticated weapons you only see I wanted to serve a higher purpose. It was during my in Hollywood movies and keep fit. Best of all, it isn't NS that I discovered that a career as a Naval Diver as regimented as you would think. There are no in the RSN offers a wealth of exciting life experiences strong barriers, allowing me to talk to my colleagues, that no other career could offer. superiors and subordinates as friends. At first, I had doubts that I'd be able to successfully complete the training, as I heard that the training Initially, I was worried about meeting the stringent was gruelling. After all, I was a non-swimmer, and fitness standards. What made it worse was that I Naval Divers are required to be masters of operating wasn't a particularly good swimmer. But the training in the water. However, with the support and wasn't just a physical test; it was also a mental test. encouragement of my fellow batch boys, and the Realistically, as long as you're deemed medically fit guidance of my instructors, I managed to overcome to become a Naval Diver, you do have what it takes to complete the training physically. It all boils down to whether you believe in your mind my doubts, and tell myself that if I set my mind to do it, and have the will to do it, I can do it! that you can do so. With the right mindset, I went from swimming like a drowning dog, to winning medals at RSN swimming competitions! This mindset served me well and eventually enabled me to graduate as a Special Forces trooper, as well as become the first Naval Diver to top the Chief Petty Officer Course. It continues to serve me well in my many adventures as a Naval Diver, from boarding crafts suspected One of the defining moments in my career wasn't out in the field, but in the classroom. I was given the opportunity to pursue a one-year of conducting piracy activities along the Gulf of Aden, to checking and clearing oil tankers heading towards the vital Al Basrah Oil Terminal course at the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, Virginia. I had the chance to learn about operational planning from in Iraq. This mindset is something that I strive to pass on to future Naval Divers, in my current role as an instructor and Platoon Commander one of the most distinguished military units, while interacting with peers from around the world. Eventually, I was named a Distinguished of the Combat Diver Course. Graduate, despite the tough competition amongst some of the finest military personnel in the world. They say that when you choose a career that you love, you'll never have to “work” a single day of your life. Especially when you're in an organisation that believes in investing in you. For instance, I'm currently pursuing a part-time Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, thanks to the 12 years on, and I still love every single day of this adventure. I love the fact that I am given the opportunity to serve the nation in a very CLASS award, a study sponsorship from the RSN. What's more, being able to do a lot of exciting exercises with a close-knit family makes unique way. And I love that I'm able to do so with colleagues who feel like my friends and family. being a Naval Diver in the RSN not just a career, but also an adventure with people you can trust your life with.
