ForthtoRoad Cramond Brig Bridge the Forth Bridge 1 & Dalmeny Road Inverkeithing To Aberdour Category: Urban, coastal, cycle path, suspension To Rosyth bridge Distance: On Route 1 : 7 miles/11 kilometres On Route 76 : 8 miles/13 kilometres Time: 1 hour (allow a bit longer if taking the route round the coast) Gradient: Undulating Surface: Tarmac surfaces. Track through Dalmeny Estate (a bit rough in places). Start/ North Finish Queensferry There are two options. Route 1 follows a cycle track North Queensferry alongside the A90, cycle lanes and a quiet road to Dalmeny, residential streets, and then the cycleway on Deep Sea World the Forth Road Bridge. Route 76 is less direct, but offers a more pleasant coastal route along quiet tracks in the grounds of Dalmeny House (www.dalmeny.co.uk), under the Forth Rail Bridge, along the High Street of historic South Queensferry, to below the Forth Road Proposed Forth Replacement Crossing. The first 5 miles/9km are on fairly quiet road, but at East Calder you join a traffic-free path through Station Addiewell West Almondell and Calderwood Country Park and then a Station Calder cycle track into Livingston (there is a network of paths in Addiewell Livingston so keep your eyes open for the Route 75 signs). A71 You head along the main street of old Livingston Village and past the Almond Valley Heritage Trust (www. almondvalley.co.uk), before following more cycle track 0 4 A7 across Easter Inch Moss, ‘fly over’ the M8, and into Bathgate. Follow the signs into the town centre and catch Miles the train back to Edinburgh (trains every 15 minutes during 0 0.5 1 the day). Alternatively, carry on along Route 75 on the 14 mile track 0 0.5 1 1.5 to Airdrie (and ultimately to Glasgow). This is a mainly Kilometres traffic-free route which runs alongside the new Airdrie to Bathgate railway line and past several new stations. It is Category: Urban and urban fringe. Follow the Category: Urban, railway path, cycle track, short distance tree-lined railway path and then multi-use path alongside the on residential streets and along the main street of Niddrie Burn. There are several kerbs across a car park and Newcraighall steps over the railway by Brunstane Station to be negotiated (or take the track up to Milton Road and back on road to the Distance: 5 miles/8 kilometres station). Here you have a choice – follow the Brunstane Burn Time: 45 minutes path to the back of Newhailes House (www.nts.org.uk), or Gradient: Noticeable drop down the Innocent Tunnel, then carry on Route 1. Musselburgh to Dalkeith 7 ROAD 8 34 B1 T Route 1 from Musselburgh Station EAS N RD HIGH STREE joins the River Esk path, where you MILTO T NORTH HIGH ST can turn left along the riverside on Newhailes Route 76 to the centre of Musselburgh Brunstane (NTS) Burn Path and the coastal paths, or right to Map 6 OL IVE Dalkeith. Route 1 heads through RD B AN B6454 ES K R O AD AIL NEW H Whitecraig and then turns on to a fine A609 5 Musselburgh railway path all the way to the outskirts of Dalkeith. Half way along you can M ONK T ON H Start/ Inveresk turn left to join the Pencaitland Way Finish Lodge Wallyford (Route 196) which takes you 12 miles Newcraighall k r Es NTS AL Musselburgh e into the East Lothian countryside (Map Riv LT Station A612 ER 8). Cycle track alongside the B6414 in 94 R A60 Newcraighall 4 CA Queen Margaret University College Dalkeith takes you across the River RBE South Esk on a footbridge. On the last A1 R stretch into town you may wish to get RY R OA off and push if you don’t like hills or D traffic. When you reach the High Street, turn right to enter Dalkeith Category: Urban, residential streets, riverside Country Park which has acres of path, short stretch along main street of semi-natural woodland, wildlife, Whitecraig, railway path guided tours and activities. Distance: 5 miles/8 kilometres (www.dalkeithcountrypark.com). Whitecraig Time: 45 minutes When the Borders Railway project Gradient: Slight down and up just before begins, Route 1 will be realigned Whitecraig, then fairly flat to Dalkeith through Dalkeith, avoiding the High Smeaton Street. Follow the Route 1 signs. Pencaitland Railway Path 8 Miles The Pencaitland Railway Path 0 0.5 1 was formerly Regional Route 73. Along the way, you’ll see evidence of the many coal mines that the railway used to serve. It’s well worth making a detour to Ormiston, Scotland’s first planned village, built in 1735 on the model of an English village (www.ormistonvillage.com). Pencaitland is another attractive and historic village and, further on, a short detour on public roads will take you to Glenkinchie Category: Rural, railway path Distillery which offers tours and tastings – and a shop if your Distance: 6 miles/9.5 kilometres panniers are big enough! West Distance: 9 miles/15 kilometres of Rosewell, there are fine views of the Pentland and the Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Moorfoot Hills to either side. To the north-west you can see the Gradient: A few gentle hills, but mainly flat large barn-like structure that currently protects historic Rosslyn Surface: Tarmac to Rosewell, then gravel. Can be muddy Chapel, built in 1446 (www.rosslynchapel.org.uk). Past the remains of Rosslyn Castle station, there is access to the Roslin Glen Country Park (steps), where footpaths lead to Rosslyn Chapel and Rosslyn Castle (www.midlothian.gov.uk). Route 196 continues along the old railway line through woodland, farmland and tunnels to Penicuik. When the Borders Railway project begins, Route 1 will be realigned through Dalkeith, avoiding the High Street. Follow the Route 1 signs. 21 22

Culross Fre igh The Palace Heading west out of Clackmannan, tL ine you can follow Route 76 on a pleasant, tree-lined track that takes Power Station L M9 you to Alloa and past famous Alloa 76 M8 Tower. Forth Road Bridge Kincardine & Dalmeny to Charlestown 12 7 A 97 Category: Coastal, cycle path and short on-road sections Starting just to the east of the old Kincardine Bridge, a Distance: 11 miles/18 kilometres cycleway runs near the road and, after a couple of turns on Time: 1 hour 50 minutes quiet public road, joins an excellent cycle track which hugs the road and then joins the ‘pipe path’ into Culross. (The ‘pipe Gradient: There are a few gentle slopes heading out of B9 path’ runs above the pipe that carries ash slurry from 13 Kincardine and a steep climb up to Crombie, but Longannet Power Station to the ash lagoons around Preston otherwise an easy runck Devon Bla Island.) Culross, a 17th century town, is well worth a visit Surface: Tarmac, short section of grass on the ‘pipe path’ (www.nts.org.uk) before you carry on along the shore.
