NAPLES AND THE AMALFI COAST
September 12 to 19, 2021
A feast for the ears. Join music professor and composer Jonathan Berger, DMA ’82, on this concert-rich
jaunt through Italy’s Campania region, attending three musical performances in historic Naples, home to
Donizetti, Scarlatti and Rossini. From the coast to the hills. Visit the cliffside town of Amalfi to see its
9th-century cathedral and 13th-century cloister, then head to the hill town of Ravello, where we view
the Villa Rufolo that inspired the setting for Wagner’s Parsifal. Vesuvian legacies. Walk among the
buildings and art of Herculaneum and Pompeii, hidden under layers of ash and pumice from the 79 CE
eruption of Mt. Vesuvius until they were rediscovered in the 1700s; preserved structures are still being
unearthed. Island reverie. Spend a day on lovely Capri, a favorite getaway of 1st-century emperor
Tiberius, where we explore the remains of his summer villa.

FACULTY LEADER
Jonathan Berger
JONATHAN BERGER, DMA ’82, is the Denning Family Provostial Professor in Music at Stanford University,
where he teaches composition, music theory and cognition at the Center for Computer Research in
Music and Acoustics. In addition to composition, Berger is an active researcher with 60 publications
covering a wide range of fields, including music, science and technology. Berger’s recent compositions,
described as “taut and hauntingly beautiful” by the New York Times, deal with both consciousness and
conscience. His chamber operas, Theotokia and War Reporter, explore hallucination and haunting
memories, and his monodrama, My Lai, portrays the ethical dilemmas of an individual placed in an
impossible situation. During our program, he will lecture on Naples as a cultural center of Europe and as
an epicenter for the birth of opera buffa, as well as the relationship between space and sound. He will
also discuss the architecture and acoustics of sacred spaces throughout Naples and comment on the
draw of emotional operas.

ITINERARY
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
NAPLES, ITALY
Arrive in Naples and transfer to our hotel. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure before a welcome
reception and dinner this evening. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (D)

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
NAPLES
Embark this morning on a walking tour through the old city of Naples, viewing some of its many
landmarks. Step inside and admire Santa Chiara, a 14th-century church and convent; the Baroque
church of Gesù Nuovo—originally built as a palace, its imposing facade is in striking difference to its
gilded interior; and San Domenico Maggiore, a majestic Gothic church and monastery. Later visit the
18th-century royal hunting lodge of Capodimonte Palace, now home to one of Italy’s greatest collections
of art, the National Gallery of Naples. Attend a private concert of Neapolitan music at a private villa in
the exclusive Posillipo neighborhood with splendid views of the Gulf of Naples, after which we savor
refreshments on the terrace. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (B)

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
NAPLES / POMPEII / HERCULANEUM
Explore Pompeii and its less-well-known but equally engrossing sister town, Herculaneum, both of which
were bombarded and buried by the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Preserved in ash
(Pompeii) and pyroclastic flows (Herculaneum) from the eruption, both ancient Roman towns have since
been excavated and today allow visitors to walk among the temples and villas and view precious
artifacts from the 1st century CE. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. A light buffet dinner will be
served at the hotel before we attend a performance at Naples’s magnificent Teatro San Carlo, the oldest
opera house in Italy. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (B,L,D)

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
NAPLES
Start this morning at the Naples National Archaeological Museum to appreciate its rich collection of
Greek and Roman mosaics, art and relics, housed in the 16th-century Royal Riding School. Afterwards
enjoy a free afternoon for independent exploration. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (B)

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16
NAPLES / AMALFI / RAVELLO
Journey outside Naples and drive down the spectacular highway that hugs the Amalfi Coast, famous for
its stunningly beautiful cliffs and quaint seaside towns. Tour the former maritime republic of Amalfi,
which once competed with Venice and Genoa for control of Mediterranean trade routes. Wander
through the Cathedral of St. Andrew, dating back to the 9th century, and its 13th-century cloister.
Peruse Le Tavole Amalfitane, Amalfi’s ancient maritime laws, in the Civic Museum, and learn about
the principles that guided maritime trade for generations. Continue on to the lovely inland
hill town of Ravello to tour the Villa Rufolo and walk amid its expansive gardens. GRAND HOTEL
SANTA LUCIA (B,L)

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
NAPLES / CAPRI
This morning sail to the lush and scenic isle of Capri, located at the south edge of the Gulf of Naples,
which was famously the summer retreat of the Roman emperors Tiberius and Augustus. Stroll amid the
ruins of Villa Jovis, Tiberius’s vacation home, enjoy lunch at a private villa, then take some time to
explore the island independently before sailing back to Naples. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (B,L)

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18
CASERTA / NAPLES
Start this morning at one of Europe’s largest royal palaces, the 18th-century Reggia di Caserta, which
contains 1,200 rooms and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a close look at the frescoes and
precious artifacts in the palace’s elaborately decorated royal apartments and halls, then wander through
the palace gardens. This afternoon is at leisure before we gather again for an exclusive concert at a
private villa, followed by a farewell reception and dinner. GRAND HOTEL SANTA LUCIA (B,D)

What to Expect
We consider this program to be moderately active. Most of our touring is done on foot. Daily excursions
involve one to three miles of walking on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned.
At some locations, such as at museums, archaeological sites or castles, guided tours require climbing up
and down several flights of stairs and standing in one place for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Stairs may
not have handrails, and buildings may not have elevators. Participants must be physically fit, active and
in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Deposit, Payments and Cancellations
A $1,000-per-person deposit is required to reserve space on this program. Final payment is due 90 days
prior to program start. Deposits and any payments are fully refundable until 90 days prior to program
start. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place is resold, in
which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply.
