Key Development Areas for wJH Teams SPEED = stride, edge control, change of direction SKILL = passing and receiving skills will provide the foundation for all teams. Puck control, deception, shooting, checking techniques and escape moves round out the skill area. Tracking repetitions in practice will help monitor skill development. INTELLIGENCE = teaching players how to “think and read” the game will be stressed from beginners to elite travel teams. Understanding offensive and defensive support along with a calmness with the puck and the ability to make plays will be a focal point. Principles and concepts will be taught as a base for systems. COMPETE = small area games and competitive practice drills will help bring out the competitive nature in each individual. Competing to get the puck and competing to keep the puck is more important than physical play.
