FROM THE DUGOUT – DAVE COOKE Good afternoon and welcome to the FA Cup match against Barwell today. I would first like to welcome the officials, players and supporters of Barwell on your visit to our football club this afternoon. It’s a change of scenery this afternoon with the FA Cup, the lads always look forward to it, as do the supporters. “I thought the lads were absolutely fantastic from 1 to 11 and the subs as well they were great!” On Tuesday we put in one of the best performances in the last couple of years especially with the players we had missing. But even if we had lost the game one- nil, I would still have been happy with the players as they gave everything on the night. But they kept going and kept knocking on the door and the lads just say never say day and it got us the win they deserved in the end. I thought the lads were absolutely fantastic from 1 to 11 and the subs as well they were great, and against a strong Buxton side with a lot of quality and they will be there or thereabouts. Enjoy the game Dave Cooke
CLUB HISTORY – BARWELL The Club played for the first time in the Midland Combination under the name of Barwell FC in the 1992/3 season when Barwell Athletic from the Leicestershire Senior League joined forces with Hinckley FC. Barwell became one of the founder members of the Midland Football Alliance League on its formation in 1994/95. The Sports complex with its bowling, cricket, football facilities and sports club is situated just out of the centre of the village making it an ideal venue for local residents. The facilities of the complex include a cricket pitch - which was used for two Leicestershire first eleven county championship matches just after the Second World War, is a current venue for some Leicestershire second eleven and youth team matches. There is an outdoor bowling green and a magnificent indoor bowls centre complete with bar and restaurant serving a wide range of drinks and meals at prices to suit all pockets. Floodlights were installed prior to the 1992/93 season and have been updated to comply with current FA lighting regulations. A covered stand was built prior to 1996/7 season and during the 1997/8 close season the ground was enclosed, an important step in our quest for higher status. Towards the end of 2000/01 season a new 250 seat cantilever stand was erected at Kirkby Road, and officially opened by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on 31st July 2001 - a Barwell lad. A new Manager, Bob Steel, took over the reins at Barwell in February 2004 and brought in Steve Greenhill and Ian Blyth as Assistant Managers ( with Ian also being coach). He steadied the side and instilled his way of playing into the players and is gradually getting the squad he wants. 2005/6 finally put some silverware on the shelf when Barwell won the Polymac services league cup final at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium, beating Leamington 3-1. 2006/7 saw Barwell finish in a disappointing 6th position and come runners up in both the Westerby Cup and the Rolleston Charity Cup. It was also the first season for Barwell’s Youth team who played in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League finishing a creditable 6th in the League and to round things off the reserves also finished 6th with a great run of results to finish the season. 2007/08 was a somewhat mixed season for the Club. The first team saw two change of Manager, Bob Steel stood down in November to take on the running of the Sports Bar on the complex and his Assistant Ian Blyth took over as manager, after a run of indifferent results and the team slipping toward the bottom three the Club decided to appoint a new Manager in Marcus Law. Marcus took over the reigns in February and with a run of good result lifted the Club to a respectable mid-table finish. The Reserves had a great season, despite losing a lot of players to the first team, finishing 3rd with the Youth team finishing runners up.
CLUB HISTORY – BARWELL 2008/09 was Marcus’s first full season at the Club and he has brought in Paul O’Brien as his Assistant with Coach Lee Knibbs and Gk Coach Pat Pattinson and Physio Alan Cooke. This was The Clubs best season to date, they finished runners up in the League on 91 points and also won the Westerby Cup beating Quorn 2-0 at the Walkers Stadium. Barwell have started the new season on a high by lifting the Joe McGorrian trophy at Market Drayton by beating the home team 4-0. 2009/10 proved to be our most successful season to date. The season started well with the lads winning the Joe McGorian Cup at 2008/09 league winners Market Drayton. After 16 season in the MFA we finally won the league and promotion to The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. They also scored 125 goals and conceded only 18. The season was also a successful one in the FA Vase where we reached the semi final losing in the last minute of the second leg to the eventual Vase winners Whitley Bay. 2010/11..again proved to be a very successful season. The season started where the last one had finished on a winning streak. In September the Manager Marcus Law left, with our best wishes, for a full time post at Kettering Town. Assistant Manager Paul O’Brien took over with Jimmy Ginnelly taking the post of Assistant Manager, unfortunately Paul had to step down due to work commitments and so he and Jimmy swapped places for our 3rd change in two months. As always with a new Manager there are comings and goings but Jimmy managed to retain most of the Squad and won the Evo Stik Division 1 South at the first attempt. 2011/12..During the closed season Barwell were put into the Evo Stik League Southern Premier Division and so for the first time were competing at level 3 . Paul O’Brien left the Club during the close season to take up a coaching position with Ex. Manager Marcus Law now at Tamworth, Martin Hier stepped up to Assistant Manager and Craig Woodley joined the Club as Coach, Rob Lawrance also came on board as GK Coach. Craig Woodley left for a job in America and Steve Anastasi came on board as coach. The team finished a creditable 9th in their first season and now look forward to improving on this in the forthcoming season. 2012/13..The Club sat in the top 5 of the League for the major part of the season but form dipped in the last couple of months and they lost out on a play off place with a draw on the last day of the season leaving Barwell in 8th position. Two or three experienced players joined at the start of the season and with a mixture of youth and experience improved on last season. 2013/14..Barwell were moved from the Southern League back to the Northern Premier League. A very difficult season lay ahead, after settling in the Southern League they now had to get used to the ways of the North. They had a reasonable start but dipped badly during the Middle part of the season and were down in the relegation battle but they turned it round and finished in a creditable 14th position.
CLUB HISTORY – BARWELL 2014/15..In their second season back in the Northern Premier League Barwell did not make the start they hoped for and after a few weeks found themselves bottom of a very strong League. A couple of players then returned from injury/suspension and they began to put results together and at the end of the season finished a creditable 7th=. They also had a good FA Cup & Trophy run and topped the season off when they won the Westerby Challenge Trophy at the King Power stadium beating neighbours Coalville Town 2-1 with goals from Nigel Julian & Jamie Hood. 2015/16..Finished a creditable 9th in the League after a great run in January/February where they had 12 straight wins. They also recorded their best FA Cup run when they got to the 1st round proper losing to National League South team Welling United 2-0. Craig Woodley joined the coaching staff as fitness coach. 2016/17..A poor start to the League saw Barwell finish 14th at the end of the season. Poor FA Cup and Trophy results saw quite a disappointing season. The highlight was winning the Leicestershire Challenge Cup at The King Power Stadium beating our neighbours Coalville Town. 2017/18 2018/2019 After finishing a creditable 9th in the 2017/18 campaign Barwell were moved to the new Southern League Central Premier League. Our first season in this league, which has greatly reduced our travelling, saw a change in manager when Jimmy Ginnelly decided to take on his local team Nuneaton Borough and try to turn their fortunes around our Assistant Manager Guy Hadland took over as manager and brought in the experience Martin Sockett as his number 2, he also brought in ex Barwell top goalscorer Kevin Charley. Guy put his stamp on the team and although Barwell finished a disappointing 16th they were starting to gel well and play some lovely football. 2019/20 The season with no end ..we played our final game on 7th March beating Bromsgrove Sporting 4-1 and the everything was stopped due to Covid19, we were sitting in 12th place and had reached the final of the County Cup Final but all football (and sports in general) was postponed and eventually the league was made null and all results cancelled.

MATCH REPORT Nantwich Town 2 Lawrie (86 pen), J. Stair (88) Buxton 1 Hurst (6) Nantwich Town: Hall, Koral, Devine, J. Stair, Bourne, Harrison, Lawrie, Haywood, Heath, Walsh, Saunders (Hughes 46) Not Used: Langley, Hawkins, Parker, T. Stair Buxton: Taylor, Hurst, Brogan (Styche 90), King, Killock, O’Grady, Dawson (Abadaki 63), Walshaw, De Girolamo (Wedgbury 63), Elliott, Clarke Not Used: Shenton Two late Dabbers goals complete dramatic comeback. Two goals in the last 3 minutes from James Lawrie & Joel Stair helped Nantwich claim all three points after a dramatic late comeback. Both sides came into the game with unbeaten records so far this season, albeit after only three games. So, with confidence high it had all the makings of an absolute cracker. It only took six minutes for the game to see its first goal as the visitors took the lead thanks to James Hurst’s goal. He cut into the box from the right side before unleashing shot that went over Greg Hall before nestling in the back of the net. It was not the start that The Dabbers would have been hoping for, however thankfully there was still a lot of football left to play.
MATCH REPORT Nantwich were struggling to get into the game, and Buxton almost a conceded a second moments later. A miscommunication at the back between Greg Hall & Ben Harrison almost lead to Harrison heading into his own goal, however luckily for him his header went behind for a corner. The visitors were commanding the game and they were playing such a high line that Nantwich couldn’t play their usual passing game. The Dabbers who were guilty of giving the ball away on the edge of their box in the 32nd minute. Chris Dawson intercepted a loose Nantwich pass before shooting from the left side of the box, Nantwich keeper Greg Hall got down well to save, before it was eventually cleared away for a corner. With three minutes to go before half time Nantwich finally had their first effort on goal as a ball from the left side found Callum Saunders with his back to goal in the box, he laid it off to James Lawrie whose first time shot was weak and easy for the keeper. Half time couldn’t have come any sooner for Nantwich, they were second best for all of the first period and had a lot of work to do if they were to get something out of this game. Whatever Dabbers manager Dave Cooke said at half time seemed to work, his side came flying out the blocks. Caspar Hughes came on for Callum Saunders at half time who brought some composure and control in the midfield. In the 52nd minute Nantwich had a golden chance to level the scoring after Luke Walsh broke the offside trap to latch onto Greg Hall’s long goal kick, as Walsh danced into the box, he went past two defender before making space for the shot, however it was straight at the keeper who saved well.
MATCH REPORT Moments later Nantwich had another great chance as Troy Bourne did well down the left before getting to the by-line and then firing across the face of goal, unfortunately for The Dabbers though, Mike Koral couldn’t quite get enough on his header to direct it towards goal. Despite being the better side in the second half, Nantwich couldn’t seem to break down the solid Buxton side. Nantwich’s next opportunity came in the 86th minute when Troy Bourne was wrestled to the ground at the box, giving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. James Lawrie stepped up for The Dabbers to send Buxton keeper Tommy Taylor the wrong way. With the scores level it was looking like Nantwich had fought back to salvage a point, however in the 88th minute the Dabbers won a free kick in an attacking position. Lawrie whipped in the free kick from the right and it was met by Joel Stair who saw his header loop into the top corner of the net, sparking scenes of jubilation all around The Weaver Stadium. It was an outstanding turnaround from the Dabbers who had managed to turn this game on its head as they came away with the three points. Their never say die attitude left manager Dave Cooke with a beaming smile on his face as he told the press after the game just how proud he was of his lads! PLAYER IN FOCUS – JOEL STAIR With the season now in full swing, it’s time to catch up with the players in our Player in Focus section. The first one is with Tuesday nights match winner Joel Stair, who has been Captaining the side with Caspar Hughes recovering from injury We caught up with Joel with a quick fire Q & A. Former Clubs? Hanley Town Best mate in football? Tough one! Played with plenty of good lads but I’ll go with Theo, he’d get upset if I didn’t. Club you supported growing up? Stoke City Who is your footballing hero? Steven Gerrard Favourite Dabbers moment? Reaching the First Round of the FA Cup, it was a great feeling on both occasions. Favourite Dabbers game? Tough to choose, but 3-2 away at Scarborough, with Danny Glover scoring a hat trick, and the 2-1 away win at Witton last season scoring the winner on New Year’s Day was also a good feeling. Best player you’ve played with? I’ll say Ricardo Fuller purely because I watched him at Stoke City when I was growing up, and to play with him was pretty special. Best player you’ve played against? I actually don’t know… I’ve only played in non- league, so I don’t think anyone’s worth putting here. Predictions for this season? We’ve started well but I don’t look too far forward, as long as we take each game as it comes we will be there or thereabouts. Also if you have any fun stories/facts about your playing career so far, please add them in. The fans will love it! Can’t really think of any without getting too many lads in trouble! All I’ll say is that we once had an eventful team night out in Birmingham, where we ran into some footy hooligans. Safe to say that didn’t end too well and that was before we even went out at night!
NANTWICH TOWN – PLAYER PROFILES GREG HALL (Goalkeeper) Greg joined the Dabbers in the summer of 2019 after a super two seasons at Witton Albion. A former four-time North-West Counties Football League Goalkeeper of the Year, Greg kept eighteen clean sheets in forty appearances in 2018-19 and was by consensus the best goalkeeper in the league that season. TROY BOURNE (Defender) Troy is a graduate from the Dabbers’ youth team, having impressed former manager Phil Parkinson in 2015/16 pre-season training. He spent much of the 16/17 campaign on loan at Alsager Town but did make a couple of first-team appearances for the Dabbers. Troy is currently a regular in the centre back position but can also play at right back when required. He won the Manager’s Player of the Season in 2017-18 and has excelled in Dave Cooke’s first two campaigns in charge. JOSH LANGLEY (Defender) Josh joined the club in the summer of 2019 with the club looking to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season. The defender is great with the ball at his feet and has an excellent reading of the game, and as a former captain in a higher division, brings another leader to the Nantwich Town dressing room. BEN HARRISON (Defender) Ben re-joined the club in the summer of 2019 after a two-year stint with Altrincham, where he not only won the Northern Premier Division in 2017-18, he helped the Robins reach the National League North play-offs the following season. The defender is a favourite among Nantwich supporters after two excellent previous spells at the Weaver Stadium, and brings experience, a super reading of the game and a hard tackling but disciplined head to the field. JOEL STAIR (Defender) Joel joined the Dabbers in 2016 after impressing at North-West Counties Football League side Hanley Town. A warrior in defence, Joel is highly regarded at the Weaver Stadium, after winning the club’s Player of the Season in 2017-18 and captaining the club on several occasions. Joel can play across the back four, with his main strength being at centre-half, but can also adequately fill in at right-back and can even offer a threat in the box from set-pieces, having netted several times from corners during his time at the Weaver Stadium. MATTY DEVINE (Defender) Matty switched Cheshire allegiances in the summer of 2019 as he joined the Dabbers from Witton Albion. An attacking full-back, Matty offers a huge threat going forward but is equally as effective at the back. The defender is highly regarded not only at the Weaver Stadium but around the league as he has frequently been mentioned around the Team of the Season squad over the last few seasons.
NANTWICH TOWN – PLAYER PROFILES MIKE KORAL (Defender) Mike joined the Dabbers from 1874 Northwich in the summer. The wing back was highly regarded at Northwich with the team clear at the top of the league until the Covid Pandemic hit. Mike also comes with good pedigree as he came through the Academy at Crewe Alexandra coming through the ranks with Sean Cooke and Casper Hughes CLAYTON McDONALD (Defender/Striker) While Clayton isn’t as frequently on the team sheet as he was in his first season, the defender can still fill in at the Weaver when required. His role has shifted slightly to a player-coach role but has demonstrated superb playing skills during his time at the club. McDonald’s role is listed as a defender, though has also played in midfield and up front in his three seasons with the club and is a real leader in the dressing room at the club. CASPAR HUGHES (Midfielder) CLUB CAPTAIN Caspar re-joined the Dabbers from AFC Fylde at the start of the 2017-18 season, before being named captain in January 2018 after the departure of Sam Hall. While Caspar is an excellent ball-winner in midfield, the skipper can also play at full-back. The midfielder was a highly rated prospect in the famed Crewe Alexandra youth academy before joining Nantwich, where he spent two solid seasons before moving on to Fylde. The midfielder helped Fylde gain promotion from both the Northern Premier League and the National League North and is regarded one of the better midfielders in the league. SEAN COOKE (Midfielder) A productive attacking midfielder, Sean is the son of manager Dave and is a dynamic threat from his number ten role. A danger from set-pieces – especially free-kicks – Sean has a keen eye for goal and has proved that not only with Nantwich but at other clubs higher up the non-league pyramid. Sean, along with captain Caspar Hughes, was part of the AFC Fylde side that won promotion from the Northern Premier Division and has also played for FC United of Manchester. He has also won the Northern Premier League’s Young Player of the Season as well as making three Team of the Season appearances. DAVID WEBB (Midfielder) David joined the club after impressing in 2019-20’s pre-season series, with the midfielder capable of filling in across the pitch. Webb has displayed a good range of passing and an indefatigable attitude to his trial spell with the club. David has Northern Premier League experience having featured for Marine, and along with playing on Merseyside, Webb has also played for the Royal Air Force’s side. JAMES LAWRIE (Midfielder) A former Northern Ireland youth international, James joined the club from Hednesford Town prior to the 2018-19 season. An experienced head in the dressing room, the attacking midfielder has played not only at a higher league level but internationally as well. The midfielder has an eye for goal, a great passing range and is also a threat from set-pieces.
NANTWICH TOWN – PLAYER PROFILES PRINCE HAYWOOD (Midfielder) Prince signed from fellow Premier Division club Radcliffe in January 2020. Ghanaian born, Prince previously played in Italy and has had spells with several different clubs in the North West at the non-league level, having played for Stalybridge Celtic, Colwyn Bay and Witton Albion. JOE MWASILE (Midfielder) A powerful winger with pace to match anyone in the league, Joe joined the club in 2016-17 originally after starting the campaign with Marine. He left at the end of the season to join fellow Cheshire outfit Warrington Town but re-joined the Dabbers in October 2017 after featuring in limited minutes for the Wire. Joe can not only beat his man for pace and strength but can put in a decent cross and has an eye for goal, having scored a few lovely efforts during his time with the club. A product of the Morecambe academy. LUKE WALSH (Midfielder) Luke joined the club in the winter of 2018-19 after impressing for Eccleshall in the North- West Counties Football League and made a solid step up to the Dabbers’ level, holding his own against EFL League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra in his debut. A wide player who can also play through the middle, Walsh is another product of the Crewe Alex academy. JOE MALKIN (Forward) Son of former Tranmere Rovers striker Chris, Joe joined the club at the beginning of the 2018-19 season from North-West Counties Football League side Cammell Laird 1907 and enjoyed an exciting first season with the club, where he won the Northern Premier League Young Player of the Season. Malkin scored some excellent goals during his first season with the club, and offers a natural goalscoring threat, both from his feet and in the air. CALLUM SAUNDERS (Forward) Callum re-signed for the club from Curzon Ashton in November 2019 after previously being with Nantwich Town during the 2018-19 season having been released by League Two side Notts County at the end off the 2017-18 season. He made his Football League debut on 9 August 2014 in a 2–1 defeat away at Fleetwood Town and scored his first Crewe goal at Doncaster on 12 December 2015. CONNOR HEATH (Forward) Connor is a new signing in the summer of 2000 after being released from Crewe Alexandra, after impressing during his 2-year scholarship period with a number of goals he signed a professional contract in the summer of 2019. Connor has impressed during the pre-season period with a few goals and will be looking to stamp his mark with Nantwich this season.

PITCHING IN NPL ROUND UP It’s been a busy week for NPL sides as they have all had midweek fixtures. The early pace setters are Warrington who currently boast a 100% record from their first three games as they have beaten Basford United, Gainsborough Trinity and more recently Atherton Collieries as they comfortably won 2-0. Scarborough and Nantwich Town currently sit in second and third as they are both on seven points after not losing all season. Scarborough have beaten both Atherton and Stalybridge, however they drew to FC United of Manchester. The Dabbers also drew to FC United Of Manchester before beating both Stalybridge Celtic and Buxton after a dramatic late comeback on Tuesday evening at The Weaver Stadium. The only other unbeaten sides are Gainsborough, Morpeth and last season’s table toppers South Shields. Gainsborough stamped their authority on the league as the thrashed Whitby Town 5-1 on Tuesday night. In fact, Tuesday evenings game were littered with goals, the most exciting game was at Hurst Cross, as Ashton United & South Shields battled it out for a share of the points, with Ashton leading 2-0 at half time it looked like plain sailing for the Tameside side, however South Shields showed as all just how good they are as they came back to earn a 3-3 draw. Morpeth and Lancaster also dramatically drew as Carl Finnigan scored in the 90th minute to level the scores at 2-2 on the night. The only side to not pick up any points so far is Radcliffe; however they have only played 2 games. In the games they have played they have conceded a total of 8 goals. They lost 4-2 on the opening day away at Buxton before losing 4-1 at home to Witton Albion on Saturday. Stalybridge, Stafford, Hyde, Grantham, Lancaster are the only sides yet to register a victory this season. With most our sides in FA Cup action this weekend there are only 2 games to be played as Witton Albion host Basford United and leaders Warrington host manager less Whitby Town.
