From acclaimed writer-director Gerard Johnson comes a psychological thriller that’s dripping in
sweat, tears, and testosterone. MUSCLE is the story of Simon, an unhappy, unambitious office
worker whose life is gradually taken over by Terry, his new, very hands-on personal trainer who
reveals himself to be more committed — and more dangerous — than Simon could have imagined.

SHORT SYNOPSIS

Simon isn’t living the life he wants. He’s tired of his dead-end job at a call centre – and he isn’t even
any good at it. He and his girlfriend are painfully drifting apart. He’s sick of his pudgy body and his
life. It’s time to make a change and hit the gym.

His inexperience, timid nature, and soft body stick out in this run-down gym full of Schwarzeneggers.
Immediately, he draws the attention of an intimidating personal trainer named Terry who offers to
coach him. Terry’s criminal past, impulse to humiliate, and aggressive style all concern Simon – but
he swiftly sees results and finally feels alive.

All too quickly though, Simon’s life spins out of control after his girlfriend leaves him and Terry
becomes his boss, friend, and roommate. Simon suddenly finds himself trapped, stuck in a self-
destructive spiral, as every aspect of his life now dangerously rests in Terry’s big, tough hands...
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Muscle is a relationship drama between two men. Simon wants change and longs to be someone
else, desperate to belong to a tribe and be accepted. Terry is a nefarious force who is at once
overbearing, needy, manipulative and cruel, someone we can’t fully understand or maybe don’t
want to. Simon meets Terry and the toxic fumes of friendship ultimately consume these ‘likely lads’
and lead to anger, resentment and betrayal.

This is a world, which although contemporary, harks back to themes of the British New Wave of the
60’s; factories have been replaced by call centers. Workers are now sipping flat-whites in the same
converted buildings as they stood in a production line fifty years ago. Old school gyms represent one
of the last real community centers in this country, football has been taken over by greed and pubs
are disappearing at an alarming rate, where else does a community go?

Shooting in black and white was a conscious decision from the very beginning, I only ever imagined
this world in stunning monochrome and we designed everything meticulously to reflect that vision.
Newcastle is not only a beautiful underused city in film but also we can still glimpse the industrial
revolution through its huge rusty bridges and crumbling architecture, a sense of place is very
important to me.

At times funny, sad, emotional, tense and downbeat, Muscle is reflective of what is happening in the
UK at this very moment in time.

ABOUT THE ACTORS

Cavan Clerkin – Simon

Cavan has most recently wrapped on filming series 4 of THE LAST KINGDOM where he plays the
regular role of “Father Pyrlig”. He has also just wrapped on filming a series regular role the up-
coming BBC series THE CAPTURE. Prior that he recently wrapped on filming the lead role of “Simon”
in Gerard Johnson’s latest feature MUSCLE.

Craig Fairbrass – Terry

Craig Fairbrass was born in Mile End, in London’s East End and made his feature film debut as an
actor opposite Denzel Washington as Challoner in Working Title’s powerful British thriller For Queen
and Country. Craig has since gone on to star in close to fifty feature films, including the lead role in
fifteen independent films in the UK and US, as well as award-winning British TV and lead guest star
roles in several major US TV series. Craig also became one of the most iconic voices within the most
successful video game franchise of all time, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare by lending his voice to Gaz,
Ghost and Walcroft in Call of Duty MW: 1, 2 and 3 and Infinite Warfare, together with two of the
world’s biggest motion capture games Battlefield V and Squadron 42/Star Citizen.

Craig’s father Jack was one of nine children and was a Stevedore, the best you could be as a London
docker and his mother Maureen was a machinist dressmaker in Petticoat Lane, she was one of ten
children. Along with his younger sister Lindsey, they lived in Stepney where Craig grew up. It was at
Eaglesfield Boys Secondary Comprehensive in Woolwich where Craig became fascinated with films
and acting. Although struggling from one year to the next and not top of the class academically, he
found drama an outlet, winning a place with the National Theatre Youth Company. It was there that
he really got the acting bug. After being expelled at 15, he worked as an asphalt roofer’s labourer, a
job he would return to time and time again in the coming years for support while securing acting
roles.

Craig soon realised that to survive he needed a second string to his bow if he was to pursue his
dream as an actor, so he returned to roofing in the day and working on the doors of some of South
East London’s less desirable nightspots for the next five years until securing enough money to buy
his own business, a sandwich bar in Woolwich market.

After his breakout role in Queen and Country, television soon followed, with the BBC drama Big Deal,
a regular role in LWT’S award winning London’s Burning and the highly acclaimed BAFTA / EMMY
award-winning TV series Prime Suspect 1 and 2 in which Craig played hard-bitten detective Frank
Burkin opposite Helen Mirren.

Craig used this as a calling card in Los Angeles, securing a starring a role in one of the biggest action
movies of the 90s, Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone, which opened doors in the US independent
film arena, with Craig starring in the action films, Nightscare, Terminal Force and Proteus before
returning to the UK to star in the British thriller Killing Time and the award-winning horror
Darklands, plus a regular role in the ITV comedy series Duck Patrol opposite Richard Wilson, David
Tennant and Jason Watkins.

In 1999 Craig joined the cast of the BBC’s flagship show EastEnders where his recurring character of
Dan Sullivan over three years won record viewing figures and a four-hander Sunday evening special
directed by Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) which won a TV BAFTA for best drama. Other strong roles
followed, lead villain Ray Betson in the TV movie The Great Dome Robbery, then to Rome to
complete his role on Moro, for controversial award-winning Italian art-house director Aurellio
Grimaldi – next to Vancouver for the Chris Klein comedy The Long Weekend and the guest lead in
BBC Radio 4’s afternoon play Fair Maids Are Shining.

Craig’s role of the killer Henry Caine opposite Nathan Fillion in White Noise 2, the sequel to the No. 1
box office hit White Noise, reached no. 5 in the top ten cinema films in London. But it was in 2008
that saw Craig in his most powerful performance to date, that of true life gangster Pat Tate in Rise of
The Footsoldier, the gangster epic based on true life events directed by BAFTA nominee Julian
Gilbey, followed by a strong supporting role in The Bank Job, opposite Jason Statham.

Craig returned to Los Angeles to guest-star in US TV series Terminator, The Sarah Connor Chronicles,
David Mamet’s top-rated action drama series The Unit, Stargate SG1 and the action film Far Cry.

Craig continues to forge a strong position in the independent film arena with lead roles in Freight,
Dead Cert and Devil’s Playground, and comedy cameos in The Shouting Men and Just For The Record.
2011 saw Craig in US action thriller House of The Rising Sun opposite Dave Bautista, co-lead in British
thriller St Georges Day, US actioner Hijacked and Universal’s multi-million dollar Vikingdom 3D,
Universal’s Get Lucky, action comedy Bula Quo the Status Quo and the male lead in Let Me Survive, a
drama based on the best-selling book.

In October 2012, Craig played the lead role of British mercenary Lex Walker opposite Jason Patric
and James Caan in the Los Angeles-based US action thriller The Outsider, followed by Universal’s
gangster spoof The Hooligan Factory.

In recent years, Craig has taken the lead role of Alfie Jennings in Jonnie Malachi’s violent, stylized
contract killer movie Breakdown and Mark McQueens’ slick revenge thriller London Heist set in
Spain’s glamorous Marbella and London’s underworld which was also written by Craig and won him
Best Actor at the Marbella Film Festival. Voice work also continued on the Call of Duty franchise with
Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare remastered. In 2018, Craig won Best Actor at the National Film
Awards for his powerful portrayal of Pat Tate in Rise of the Footsoldier 3 – The Pat Tate years. Craig
has lead roles in two of the most eagerly anticipated performance capture computer games this
year: the Gary Oldman Squadron 42/Star Citizen and the co-lead in “Under No flag” in Battlefield V
single player mode. Craig also starred in Rise of the Footsoldier 4 and the Scott Adkins actioner
Avengement. 2019 sees Craig take the lead role of Eddie Franks in the hard hitting, London crime
thriller, Villian.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

Gerard Johnson – Writer and Director

After working in the industry as a runner on commercials and music videos, Gerard moved into post-
production and created his first short film LONE MAN in 2001. This was followed quickly by his next,
the award-winning MUG, which was distributed by Brit Shorts, and caught the attention of BAFTA
winning Writer/Producer Paul Abbott.

Gerard then created a short film called TONY. Upon seeing it, Paul Abbott suggested they produce a
feature based around the title character.

After an intense six-month rehearsal process, TONY was shot on location in the East End of London
with Abbott Vision and the UK Film Council financing. Officially selected for the Edinburgh Film
Festival in 2009, Gerard won the Trailblazer award for new talent that same year.

TONY has since become an underground cult hit that has won prizes and recognition at Film Festivals
around the world. It was released theatrically in the UK and the US in 2010.

Gerard’s next project was HYENA, financed by Film4 and the BFI and produced by Stephen Woolley
at Number 9 films. It would take him four years of research, developing and writing, and casting a
mixture of professional actors and non-actors.

Before shooting began, the film was picked up by independent sales and sold internationally around
the world. The film had its worldwide debut opening the Edinburgh International Film Festival in
2014. It also took the Toronto International Film Festival by storm where it was picked up for US
distribution by Tribeca Films.

The critically acclaimed HYENA won Best Film at Sitges in Spain, the Grand Jury prize at Beaune Film
Festival France and also Best Actor for Peter Ferdinando at Les Arcs Film Festival in France as well as
being distributed globally.

HYENA has been championed by the likes of Paul Schrader (TAXI DRIVER) and Nicolas Winding Refn
(DRIVE) for its stylish and uncompromising look at police corruption and crime in today’s London.

Gerard is attached to direct THREE RIVERS, a crime thriller set in Pittsburgh, shooting in 2019 and
produced by Robbie Brenner (DALLAS BUYERS CLUB).

Bobbie Cousins – Production Designer

Bobbie’s career as an installation artist began after he ventured south from Manchester to London
via Nottingham Trent where he completed his BA in fine art.

This background combined with a natural eye for the nuances of design enabled him to develop and
obtain the practical skills needed to grow within the art department.

In a short period of time his work was put to the test on a range of TV dramas, feature films and
music videos including the ‘award winning’ TV Drama Misfits and Gerard Johnson's Hyena, a hard-
hitting feature film about the Albanian mafia, and Russell. T Davies's Banana.

Bobbie’s work is inspired by his sculptural background and renowned for its unique aesthetic. In less
than 2 years after his first appearance on set as an art department runner, he had acquired a host of
on-set experience and excelled within all realms of the art dept.

Highlights of his earlier career work include 45 Years (Andrew Haigh) and Disobedience (Sebastian
Lelio). He has been lucky enough to share sets and work alongside the likes of Rachel Weisz, Letitia
Wright, Rob Lowe, Alessandro Nivola, David Tennant, Joe Gilgun and Charlotte Rampling.

After 7 years in the art dept Bobbie made the conscious decision to create new opportunities as a
production designer.

His debut film in this capacity was Mari (Georgia Parris) a compelling tale of womanhood, dance and
the complexities of mother / daughter relationship for which Bobbie used colour and shade to
highlight these complexities. Mari was funded by the BFI, BBC Films, and Boudica Films and had its
world premiere at London Film Festival in 2018.

He has just wrapped on The Owners (Julius Berg) starring Maisie Williams and Sylvester Mccoy,
another psychological drama for which he was tasked with designing, dressing and building an
authentic set for a host of toxic characters.

Ian Davies – Editor

Bafta-nominated editor Ian Davies has worked across almost every genre in film and television. He
began cutting commercials before establishing a career in documentaries. This began with an
assistant credit on the Oscar winning One Day in September and in the same year he edited his first
documentary for Channel 4. Since then he has worked with directors and producers including Nick
Broomfield, Kevin Macdonald, John Battsek and Richard Curtis. In 2012 Ian was Bafta nominated for
a three-part BBC series following a ballet company called Agony and Ecstasy. Ian’s work has been
nominated for the Grierson Award three times.

In 2014 Ian switched his focus to drama, first in television and then into film. These dramas include
work for Channel 4, BBC, ITV, AMC, NBC & Amazon. Recently he worked on the Netfix series Troy:
Fall of a City and Curfew a big budget action series for Sky One. Feature film credits include comedy
Micro Men starring Martin Freeman and thriller 10 x10 starring Luke Evans, written & produced by
Noel Clarke.

Ian met director Gerard Johnson in 2007 and edited his first feature Tony. He has subsequently
