History of the Haunt By Michelle Salvidar Chairperson of the event for the past 12 years T he first Halloween event sponsored by LHHIA took place in 1980, and it was organized by Jane Williams, who is now mayor of La Habra Heights. (You may have seen references to earlier Halloween gatherings, including some held at Hillcrest Church, but our research in the Heights Life archive has confirmed that Jane's party was LHHIA's first—and we haven't missed a year since!) Assisting Jane were Sallie Cooke, Ginger Skinner and Heidi Pearce. Heidi's son, Eric, and a group of his friends created the first scary "spook house" (a little too scary, in fact, for some smaller children). The first "houses" on "Trick-or-Treat Lane" were large, painted cardboard appliance boxes donated by Paul Goldenberg. Called simply the "Halloween Party" and held at the "Park Building" (which we now usually call the gym), that first event was a great success, attracting more than 350 children. A big hit was a jack-o-lantern made by Sue van Couvering from a giant pumpkin. Lorett Saylor donned an elaborate snake costume painted in 1989 and 1990, including the one shown above and hissed "Treatsss, pleasessss!" to arriving children who that first contained the terms "La Haunted Heights" and contributed candy for the trick-or-treat houses. LHH enjoys Fall Festival at The Park In a special ceremony, State Senator Tony Mendoza presented the board of LHHCSF with a Senate Certificate of Recognition, which read in part: “On behalf of the 32nd Senate District, I commend your organization for uniting residents of La Habra Heights with law enforcement and firefighters to deter criminal activity, promote public safety, and ensure a safer and thriving community.” Senator Mendoza observed that this year’s festival was “twice as large as the first one last year.” City Councilman Kyle Miller, a LHHCSF board member, recognized Michael Higgins for organizing and managing such a successful event. Senator Mendoza and members of the LHHCSF board posed for photographs with the Hilltoppers 4-H Club, which sponsored a booth at the festival. Platinum sponsors for the festival were the City of La Habra Heights, Northgate Market (which also provided food), SoCalGas, Ray Fernandez Real Estate and Jan Fiore Real Estate. Gold sponsors were Michael Higgins and Pam McVicar and Rafael and Esther Fernandez. Silver sponsors were Hacienda Growers, Martplan Insurance Agency, Southern California Edison, Layne and Karen Baroldi, and Chester Jeng DDS and Laura Lee DDS.
