Dear Travelers and Friends, A tapestry of indelible cultural influences—including Berbers, Romans, Arabs, and many more—Morocco is an exhilarating destination. Join me in February 2021 for a 12-day tour of this mesmerizing North African country, with its diverse treasures of art and architecture. As an expert in Islamic art, I’ve worked on museum projects across Morocco, and I look forward to introducing you to its exceptional art institutions, lavish palaces, and the energy of its historic and exuberantly colorful cities. In Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, we will begin at the vast Hassan II Mosque and the Museum of Moroccan Judaism, the only museum devoted to the remarkable contributions of the Jewish community in the Arab world. In the capital of Rabat, we’ll admire the white marble mausoleum of King Mohammed V and explore millennia of Moroccan history at the Archaeological Museum. We will venture to the oldest part of the city to tour the medieval Kasbah des Oudaïas, taking in awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic Ocean. A high-speed train will transfer us to fabled Tangier, home to a U. S. National Historic Landmark, the American Legation Museum, which served as the United States’ diplomatic post from 1786 until World War II. Nearby, we will visit the UNESCO-recognized medina of little-known Tétouan. After a stop in the blue city of Chefchaouen, we’ll enjoy four nights in magical Fes at a refurbished 19th-century palace that was once the residence of the Grand Vizier of Jamaï. While here, we’ll explore the extraordinary HIGHLIGHTS courtyards of Fes with their exquisite tile decoration. Morocco Land of Mists & Mysteries February 6–19, 2021 TRAVELING WITH YOU Christopher Noey Christopher Noey is an art historian, author, and an Emmy award-winning producer of films on art and culture. An expert in Asian and Islamic art, Mr. Noey has taught at Williams College and at the City College of New York. At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, he created video installations for a diverse array of exhibitions, including videos and interactive kiosks in the newly renovated Islamic galleries in 2011, and he was series director of the innovative online features 82nd & Fifth and The Artist Project. He also documented the building of the Museum’s Moroccan court and traveled to Fes to film mosaic tile production as well as the great historic courtyards of the city. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12: FES Visit the Nejjarine Funduq, an 18th-century caravanserai (inn) that is now a museum of wooden arts and crafts. Explore the Al Karaouine Mosque, including the library. In the afternoon tour the Bou Inania Madrasa or the Al-Attarine Madrasa, both great examples of Islamic architecture, followed by a visit to the tannery quarter.
