Villa Maria, Episcopal Academy field hockey squads aiming high again The Villa Maria Academy and Episcopal Academy squads, coming off highly-successful 2017 campaigns, are aiming high again this fall. Villa Maria, which posted a 27-1 record last fall and won a PIAA state title, has a new head coach in Katie Evans and a solid crop of key returnees that include senior midfielder Adele Iacobucci, senior forward Hannah Miller, senior
midfielder Mary Harkins, junior midfielder Maggie Powers and senior defender Liz D’Ascenzo. Other key Hurricanes to watch this fall include freshman midfielder Ryan Hickey, freshman goalie Abbie Zarkoski, junior defenders Adriana Yacovelli and Kate Perretta and junior forward Meg Dillon. Evans said, “We have an experienced and talented senior class who are great leaders, a strong attack who are very good at finishing, good speed and athletic backs who read the play well. We have strong players in every line who are excellent leaders and talented players – namely Mary Harkins, Hannah Miller, and Adele Iacobucci. They create a lot of stability in our game and how we play – which allows us to create opportunities together and attack. Our biggest challenge is that other teams are very motivated to play us. We have to be prepared for a fight, every single game.” Episcopal Academy, which posted a 17-4-1 record last fall, finished second in the Inter-Ac with an 8-1-1 league mark. Led by head coach Gina Buggy, now in her 32nd year of guiding EA, the Churchwomen’s key returnees include senior goalie Caroline Kelly (committed to Boston University), senior center back Lauren Devletian (a first team All-Inter-Ac selection, committed to Dartmouth), senior forward Gianna Pantaleo (a first team All-Inter-Ac selection, committed to Boston University), senior forward Maddie Rehak (a first team All- Inter-Ac selection, committed to Bucknell), junior forward Kathleen Anderson (committed to Cornell) and sophomore midfielders Kelly Smith and Sofia Acosta. EA lost to graduation last spring Katie Crager (a first team All-Inter-Ac selection), goalie Bridget Boyle, Molly Giles, MaryKate Chambers, Autumn Mueller, Ally Marino and Olivia Tuma. Current EA senior Lindsay Walling tore her ACL and is out for the season. Buggy said, “Although we graduated a very strong class of seniors, we are looking forward to playing an aggressive style of hockey with an ability to attack from all positions. Our forwards are skilled and fast, and our young defense will have
good support from our experienced and athletic goalkeeper. Our ability to gell as a unit will ultimately determine how successful we will be as a team. We are looking forward to working hard together and to challenging each other to get better every day.” Hurricane Warning: Villa off to hot start under new coach Katie Evans MALVERN—Sure, the Villa Maria field hockey team long ago established itself as one of the top field hockey programs in the state, if not the nation. Win two state titles in four years time, reach state finals four times in the past six years, and there is little doubt there’s a culture of winning in that sport at Villa, one that goes back decades really. Villa Coach Katie Evans
Still, when you bring in a new coach, there might be a few hiccups as the team and coach adjust to one another. That has not been the case at Villa, where Katie Evans becomes just the fourth head field hockey coach at Villa in 40-plus years. So far, the Hurricanes are unbeaten and untested at 3-0, and have outscored their opponents by a margin of 29-2. “It’s been a pretty easy transition, really,” said 2017 DLN Player of the Year Hannah Miller, who has already scored 12 goals on the year. “She’s got a lot of experience, and the fact that she played here herself, she understands what Villa field hockey means.. We’re all really excited to have her here and to see what we can do.” Evans is a 2003 graduate of Villa Maria, and played under legendary Hall of Fame coach Maurene Polley. As she climbed the ladder on various USA Field Hockey national teams, she was also afforded the opportunity to play for Daan Polders, who guided the Hurricanes to the pair of recent state titles. “I’m just so thrilled to be back at Villa,” said Evans. “Maurene Polley set such a great standard back when I was here, and of course Daan did a fantastic job, really raising the level of the entire program. It’s amazing to come here and see just how talented these girls are. And it’s not just a skill level—there’s a maturity as well.” Ryan Hickey scores a goal
for the Hurricanes As an alumnus, Evans is more than respectful of the legacy here predecessors have left. But she’s also excited for the chance to put her own stamp on the program. “I like to think that I have an approach that is basically a combination of Maurene and Daan,” said Evans. “The thing that I’m trying to do is that I don’t want to come in and just change everything from what Daan did. I think I’m smart enough to know not to try to fix things that aren’t broken. I’m just really excited to come back and be a part of the Villa community again.” Tuesday afternoon, the Hurricanes played host to St Basil’s, and notched win number three by a score of 16-0. It was 10-0 by halftime. “Our attacking and finishing has been unreal with girls like Hannah Miller up there,” said Evans. “Then you have girls like Mary Harkins and Adele Iacobucci bringing the ball up with Hannah to finish, it has just been amazing. Those three are such a special group, and with all the support around them, we haven’t shown any real weaknesses yet.” Adele Iacobucci slips in a goal Nine different Hurricanes found the back of the cage against St. Basil’s. Miller led the way with four. Harkins, Iacobucci,
Margie Cardern and Ahnfeesa Fitzpatrick each had a pair, along with single goals from Shay Burns, Annie Shaw, Kara Maniscalco and Ryan Hickey. Defensively, the Hurricanes were flawless. Rare was a Magic trip to their offensive half, and St Basil didn’t force a single penalty corner or get off a shot on goal. St Basil 0 0 –0 Villa 10 6 –16 Goals: Miller (4), Harkins (2), Carden (2) Fitzpatrick (2) Burns, Shaw, Maniscalco, Hickey Goalie saves: Campion (StB) 25, VMA none Plymouth Whitemarsh improves on penalty corners, blanks Wissahickon WHITEMARSH >> Plymouth Whitemarsh entered Tuesday’s game against Wissahickon with an undefeated record, but the team struggled with penalty corners during the early stages of the season. That weakness turned into a strength against the Trojans. The Colonials scored three goals off penalty corners to highlight a 5-0 Suburban One League American Conference win at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. “We spent a lot of time in practice working on (corners),” PW coach Charise Halteman said. “Our first two games we really hadn’t been too successful with the corners. We weren’t
getting them off, we though the insert had to be a little faster, so we spent a lot of time in practice working on them. Quite honestly, they were scored not quite off the play that was called, but by the girls being ready for rebounds and taking advantage of the situations.” The Colonials (3-0, 2-0) three goals set up by corners were the first three goals of the game. Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Kennedy Reardon shoots the ball past Wissahickon goalie Meghan Reilly during their game on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. (Gene Walsh/Digital First Media) Senior Kennedy Reardon tallied the first just over 10 minutes into the game. Kayla Link sent the insert pass to Reardon, who forwarded it to Sam Spera. Spera fought off a couple Trojans to get the ball back to Reardon, who smacked it into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. Reardon scored again to make it 2-0 with 5:29 remaining in the
first half. The Colonials kept the ball close to the cage after the initial corner play was blocked and Reardon was in position to bury the rebound. “We definitely worked on our inserts a lot with the last couple days practicing,” Reardon said. “It’s definitely been one of our main priorities at practice to work on just because we haven’t been too consistent on our new surface and such, but I think we’re getting the hang of it.” Hailey Copestick scored the third goal of the game. Similar to Reardon’s second, the intended corner play was stopped by Wissahickon but PW continued to apply pressure. Copestick found her way to the ball and made it a commanding 3-0 lead and forced the Trojans to take a timeout. Wissahickon’s Grace Ball uses her body to shied the ball away from Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Sam Spera during their game on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. (Gene Walsh/Digital First Media)
“We kept tackling from behind and causing corners,” Wiss coach Lucy Gil said. “That’s something we’re going to work on in our practices. (Corners haven’t) been a problem.” Kaleigh Missimer scored the final two goals of the game. The first came courtesy of a spinning pass from Ava Borkowski and the second off a rebound when the goalie came out from the cage. The Trojans (1-1, 1-1) managed just four shots on net in the game while PW dominated possession and the pace of play. “We really did not expect this game to go like this,” Gil said. “I think the slowness of the turf really threw us and we stopped moving after a while. It looked like they kept moving and we weren’t moving. That’s what happens. We have a lot to work on.” Wissahickon’s Kendal Williams dribble up field during the
Trojans’ game against Plymouth Whitemarsh on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. (Gene Walsh/Digital First Media) Wissahickon goaltenders Meghan Reilly and Alli Wood made plays in the cage to keep the score from getting out of hand. Reilly had six saves and Wood totaled 11. “The goalies are definitely a bright spot,” Gil said. “And I gave Alena (Doll) the game ball — my left-back. She did a great job. Their forwards are really fast and good and she stopped her (assignment) every single time.”
