                                Mental Health Module Trainings
  Presented by Jennifer Farnum, LCSW-R and Claudia Bonavita, M.S.
    This series covers seven Mental Health Modules over the course of seven sessions. Participants will be provided
    handouts which include general mental health facts, a text hotline poster, websites and strategies for educators.

12/10/20   1 – Introduction to   We will look at:
           Mental Health         • The difference between typical feelings and emotions in comparison to mental illness.
                                 • How mental illness affects a person’s ability to function in the home, school, relationships and the
                                    community.
                                 • How mental illness affects the brain, as well as images depicting brain anomalies.
                                 • Current mental health statistics
                                 • The obstacles someone with mental illness needs to overcome in order to complete the same task as
                                    their typical peers
                                 • How to empower staff to become the difference in a student’s life
                                 • The 17 instructional strategies that staff can utilize to help students be as successful as possible in a
                                    supportive educational setting.
1/14/21    2 – Post Traumatic    We open this model with a discussion on how everyone might have a traumatic event occur in their lives.
           Stress and Trauma     Depending on a person’s reaction to the event, their coping skills, and their access to supports, the impact
                                 of that event might vary greatly. In this training we will:
                                 • Review the diagnosis, symptoms and risk factors for PTSD.
                                 • Reveal statistics regarding trauma
                                 • Discuss resiliency and review a questionnaire regarding resiliency and what tools can be utilized to
                                      build resiliency
                                 • Discuss the Adverse Childhood Experience Survey (ACES) and the overall impact of trauma on the
                                      human brain and an individual's ability to function in their daily life.
                                 • Provide a series of instructional and environmental strategies.
                                 There are links to websites for mindfulness and deep breathing provided as a resource. As in all modules,
                                 we provide handouts. These include PTSD strategies for the classroom, a trauma-informed classroom
                                 handout, ACES survey, resiliency questionnaire, and 7 secrets to resilience.
2/22/21    3 – Anxiety           We begin this module with an overview of anxiety, which includes a definition from NIMH, as well as the
                                 six main types of anxiety. We look at generalized anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder,
                                 panic disorder/attacks, phobias and school anxiety/refusal. We will provide an overview, instructional
                                 strategies, tips to help promote interpersonal relationships, and ways to help the student feel safe. Also
                                 included in this module are strategies that support the success of the student in school. Handouts will
                                 cover “life with anxiety”, “tips for tackling anxiety”, and the difference between feeling anxious and being
                                 diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
3/11/21    4 – Dignity and       In this training, we will:
           Respect               • Discuss what the words dignity and respect mean with respect to ourselves and our students.
                                 • Review the 8 standards of dignity and respect.
                                 • Dialogue about self-awareness and our own triggers when it comes to how we treat others and expect
                                      to be treated.
                                 • Examine some common assumptions about those who have cognitive and physical limitations.
                                 • Look at the cultural differences within families
                                 • Review CPS’s definition and guidelines of neglect and abuse is reviewed.
                                 • Review mental health team members and proper channels for discussion of issues that might be of
                                      concern regarding a student.
                                 • Provide ways of empowering the teachers to take a leadership role to build an environment that
                                      fosters dignity and respect in the classroom.

•    Discuss issues that might be of concern regarding a student.
                                •    Topics discussed include confidentiality, FERPA, speaking to parents, respecting parental rights,
                                     respecting treatment options and student’s medical conditions It is not what you say but how you say
                                     it. We provide a series of helpful thoughts/strategies that they may want to implement.
4/15/21   5 – Autism            This module will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In this training, we will:
                                • Explain The “Spectrum”.
                                • Explain how connections to differences in the brain as it relates to ASD. Participate in a video that
                                     illustrate from the perspective of a young man with autism, what it is like for him to have “Asperger’s
                                     Syndrome.”
                                • Experience a first-hand account of a person with more severe autism and the sensory overload that
                                     happens in many people on the spectrum.
                                • We provide many handouts with classroom strategies and tips for teachers. Some handouts are
                                     informational regarding the disorder.
5/13/21   6 – ADHD              In this training, we will:
                                • Provide an overview of ADHD.
                                • Discuss the latest DSM-V definition and merge of ADHD and ADD
                                • View first-hand accounts of what it is like to live with ADHD.
                                • Provides participants with classroom strategies.
                                • Simulate attentional issues while trying to learn.
                                • Participate in a situation where a person describes a typical day and how ADHD impacts that person.
                                Included within this module are instructional strategies that can be utilized to support students struggling
                                with ADHD. We provide handouts with classroom strategies and tips for teachers.
6/3/21    7 – Neurobiological   What is a neurobiological disorder? How they can affect a student’s ability to focus, remain on task and
          Disorders             impulsivity? In this training, we will:
                                • Explore the topics of Traumatic Brain injury, Seizure disorders and Misophonia.
                                • Discuss the areas of the brain and how an injury in that section could impact a student’s functioning.
                                • Discuss generalized and partial seizures.
                                • Provide an overview of various types of seizures and do an activity depicting how Absence seizures can
                                     interfere with a student’s learning process.
                                • Discuss and watch a video on Misophonia. How sounds can cause a reaction of rage for some people.
                                 These neurobiological disorders were selected to be addressed to increase awareness and empathy of
                                those who work with the students.

TIME:            4:00 – 5:00 pm
COST:            $35 for subscribers / $45 for non-subscribers PER PERSON, PER SESSION

                       Jennifer Farnum, LCSW-R, has worked in the field of Social Work for 27 years, and has been the Lead
                       Counselor for ESBOCES for over 15 years. As Lead Counselor, Jennifer has the opportunity to oversee the
                       work of our 75 plus social workers, create trainings and networking events and to attend several County
                       Taskforces and Boards. I am also the chair of the Suffolk County Advisory Board on Child Protection.

Claudia Bonavita, M.S., has been an Autism Consultant for Eastern Suffolk BOCES for over 20 years, and
a Special Educator for 32 years. As a consultant, Claudia works with Eastern Suffolk BOCES component
districts in understanding and applying evidence-based practices to better serve students on the Autism
Spectrum. Claudia is one of the original creators of the Masera Learning Center for ESBOCES. Claudia has
been an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s College for 16 years and currently teaches in their Child Study
and License Behavior Analyst programs.

         Program’ from the drop down list and click search;
    • Workshops are listed in chronological order
    • Select the title of the course you would like to enroll in
    • Click the ENROLL button at the bottom of the page
    • Select the correct login method that applies to you (1) registered user; (2) new user; (3) MyLearningPlan.com user
    • After you choose your login method then Enter User Name & Password – select Log in
    • Enter and update (if needed) your personal account registration information
    • Click Update & Continue
    • Select payment method
    • Click on the checkbox to agree to the Terms and Conditions regarding registration and/or cancellations –
