THEN & NOW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS DAVID MOVED FROM NIGERIA TO STUDY COMMUNITY SERVICES TO THEN FURTHER HIS STUDIES AT CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY. How did you find your experience in CIT? secured my position even more. My organisation even offered Studying at CIT was fun. I had previously done some studies in to sponsor and they made my life so much easier because at Environmental Science in my country and I was working in that the time I could not get a state sponsorship. This is something field already. I knew that I wanted to change careers and I was by the way that international students struggle with a lot – very interested to get in the Community Services sector. I was immigration and visa issues. actually in Canberra visiting my sister who has been living here I knew I wanted to continue my studies, so I started to look for for a long time. She always told me “if you want to study in institutions; I knew that for Community Services the pathway Canberra, you have to go to CIT”! I went to the CIT Open Day was with ACU or I had the option of finding something in that was held at CIT Reid; I talked to a few people, I had free another city. However, I did not want to leave Canberra, I really coffee and food on the day, which was great. The price of my love this place and always thought that it would be a good course along with what CIT was offering was exactly what I was place to start a new life. I ended up enrolling with Charles Sturt looking for. As I was on a visitor’s visa, I applied for a student University, I asked them if according to my visa (I was on a visa and then I enrolled in a Diploma in Community Services. bridging visa at the time that gave me full work rights and full I really enjoyed my studies at CIT. I am an outgoing person so study rights) I was able to do the course online and they said I was not afraid to speak up and I think that I became a bit of yes. I also checked with immigration and everything was fine, a spokesperson for my fellow international students in class. so enrolled in a Social Work Degree that I am still doing and working full time as well. After you graduated from CIT what did you do, more studies? Or straight to work? In 2018, I applied for another job and got something with December 4th 2016! I will never forget that date, it was my Disability Employment Services (DES), which includes School graduation at CIT and it was a big day for me. My mum came Leavers Employment Support (SLES), Employment Support all the way from Nigeria, my sister, my girlfriend were here Services (ESS). It is a service offered and affiliated with the to support me. I am a very organised person and I already National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). I now work full knew what my journey would be like. While I was doing my time with that organisation and I had to give up many hours of Certificate III I got a part-time job in a community based my other job but I still do 2 days a week with my other job on organisation which meant that I had a foot in the industry. top of my studies of course. It is not always easy to juggle it I was a residential care officer and then while I was doing all at once but it is a matter of discipline and also a matter of my certificate IV I got promoted to a senior support worker/ being fulfilled, this is my passion I want to be a voice for other Team Leader position and when I graduated for my Diploma it people; I want to make a difference in society. 10 Excite
How is life after CIT? Do you miss it? Just one thing that I would still like to mention is that Well, as I mentioned life has been pretty busy after CIT. But maybe there should be a bit more opportunities of jobs for I do miss it, I actually miss many things about CIT. I miss my international students. I am very lucky to be in Canberra and friends, my mates; we studied together, we had the same Canberra has more opportunities than other cities that are goals and worked together in order to achieve these goals; we bigger and more competitive, however it is still a problem. have been through a lot so definitely I miss that. 1999 Way back in 1999, before Y2K and the millennium The team was mentored throughout the process by the CEO bug, before the 2000 Sydney Olympics and before of Telstra ACT. The team, which comprised of 5 CIT students, Facebook, CIT had nowhere on campus to buy coffee. 1 ANU student and 2 UC students, met weekly for some very feisty and animated planning sessions. Early in 1999 CITSA was asked to support students to enter business projects into the Young Achievement Australia Awards CITSA supported the students in the project by giving them (YAA), an annual event funded by the social corporate business a space to set up their business idea. Jackie Faraj, one of the CIT students involved, suggested YALA, an arabic word which sector. We were asked to find CIT students to work with ANU when broadly translated meant ‘come on, let’s go or welcome’. and UC students to create a Tertiary Team to compete. Jackie’s mother, a great supporter, blessed the first coffee The objective of the competition was to develop a business idea, machine at the official opening of Cafe Yala. establish a shareholder business, get it up and running and report The project ran for the required 6 months and was an absolute on the business at the end of 6 months. The business had to have success and the Tertiary Team won the YAA 1999. YA in its logo to acknowledge the YAA Awards. At the end of the 6 months, shareholders were paid out and CITSA took over the business to start the first of many Yala’s. 14 Excite
THE STORY OF YALA OVER 100 STUDENTS HAVE GRACED YALA When Yala first opened, during the student project phase, it was given temporary residence in what is now the Student Central, which at that time was a student area with a bar. It was so successful from day one that we immediately started the planning and design of the new Yala location. Initially, Yala was supported by the Canberra Coffee Company and Bill Burton, the owner, was instrumental in helping set up the first Yala. Over the years, as we understood more and more about coffee, we explored the market for new approaches to coffee. At that stage Sam Corra (now head roaster at Ona) was well established behind the coffee machine. Cafe Yala staff started attending Coffee Expo’s and soon realised the coffee market was moving very fast. Sam’s interest in coffee was instrumental in the change of direction and commitment to quality at Yala. Sam convinced us to switch to freshly roasted coffee, so we took the plunge (ha) and were introduced to Sasa Sestic who was roasting coffee in Queanbeyan in a small factory with the help of his parents. The business, (the original ONA), was just getting started and we were keen to stay local. There is no need to talk about what Ona has gone on to become… The relationship between Yala and ONA has been long and rewarding. Sasa has always supported Yala in every way possible, providing training, advice, encouragement and in exchange ONA has been a place for die hard Yala baristas to go to when they have outgrown Yala (Sam Corra, currently Head Roaster ONA, Yanina Ferreya, currently competing in Boston THIS IS for the 2019 World Championship Brewers Cup, Digby Tomes, Michael Connell). WHERE YALA Yala has always supported the employment of CIT students over 20 years over all campuses. During this time over 100 students WAS BORN have graced the café’s, made your coffee and chosen the music. Yala might not be the trendy designed space that we have come accustomed to in Canberra, but Yala has continued to employ and inspire coffee enthusiasts, been the meeting place for staff and students at CIT, provided space for CIT artists and photographers, provided the sweet treats when you need to be uplifted and continues its commitment to providing quality Ona coffee. 15

There were also a lot of student ambassador studying Psychology and working in lots of volunteer-based programs and conferences that I got involved in especially work, including being posted at a mental health hospital. to the first International Student Conference in Brisbane If I was still in Argentina, compared to what I have achieved where I met others and heard about their experiences here (Australia), I would have been held back due to the fact that were similar to my own. Australia was the first country I ever traveled to. I have been in Canberra for nearly 10 years now and my experience in Australia and the “Learning how to trust others especially Australian culture keeps changing and shifting. Eventually, I moved from working at the cafes, to working and understanding their struggles. In order to educate the for a company that sources coffee directly from producers, public and raise awareness of the cause I moved to the making an impact at the origin level, at the source. I understood the importance of making a highly relevant and applicable to my job and it helped business sustainable & profitable and this pushed my drive myself connect more with what I’m doing. I had a clear idea further to making a change. We (Project Origin) do this of what I wanted to do and it had to be related to coffee. because, coffee is inclusive & universal and have a broad My entry point into the commercial coffee industry was range of products. Both the rich & the poor know about it with LavAzza and Vittoria but it wasn’t until at age 23 that I and can drink it. Coffee is an everyday thing. The advice they gave me was to go important to educate the Australian public, raise awareness with companies that directly source and distribute specialty and share the stories of the producers about these coffee. They also mentioned ONA Coffee that is based in meanings and values. Project Origin is by means for me and Canberra and actually Café Yala had been using ONA coffee others to help improve these people’s quality of life. Both the city and Australia have become a very natural transition… big part of my identity. Every single time I visit Argentina, I Just before the move I was working at The Cupping Room find myself feeling more and more Aussie. However, when I near the ANU. What do you and Project Origin have planned for the future? I am going to cite one of my great teachers from CIT, Milan Rajic, “You either work for the best restaurant or you open the best restaurant”. I have been at Project Origin for 2 years and not a lot of places can do what Project Origin can do with the improving of the outcome of the flavour at the same time working with producers to make their quality of life better. We are not saying we are the best. We are Canberra, we are humble and we are small. We have our heart in the right place. The work is demanding and hard, but we are getting bigger and we are going to keep riding those waves. We want to be at the very front of the specialty coffee industry, pushing to higher grounds and keep improving the producers’ lives so that they at a point in time where they can have the same amount of choices and opportunity as other people. Australians are friendly and laid back to the point where they can take their time with planning for the future. This is not necessarily possible in other parts of the world. This is what we want for the producers. Coffee is that medium to achieve this for us. Parting words… Everyone knows what they want in their hearts. Exercising those choices may seem difficult but there are no obstacles. Just do it. You need to know that the journey is not always linear or in a straight line. Deep inside you know, and it will take all you’ve got to do what you love. It is a choice to be negative or positive, don’t focus on the negatives. English is not my first language, Spanish is and that is an asset and for the industry I am in, it is an advantage. Your past experiences all add value to who you are, all the positives that make up you. You are you and you can’t compare yourself with others. Build yourself up and build your career. Australia is a super lucky country where if you work hard, anything is possible. Also, if you ever get “Everyone knows what they want in stuck you could always reach out for support. There are their hearts. Exercising those choices people and organisations in place to do just that. Many people think that the solution comes from the outside or may seem difficult but there are from someone else, but that is not true. You have to pursue it, exercise your choices. no obstacles.” #02/2019 33
MOVIE REVIEWS TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE (2018) M Directed by Susan Johnson Starring Lana Condor / Noah Centineo Before I write this review I would like to set the tone... I am a 21 year old boy who is all about sports, sports and sports! It must be mentioned I HATE and I say with a passion HATE romance movies. I have never watched one in my life and I never will watch one in my life … Reading the blurb I thought it was just going to be one of those boring romances but I must admit I was quite wrong. I love that in this movie it definitely allows you to relate to some of the characters. I definitely recommend this film to young or old! It’s a cliché in the end but everybody loves a cliché. This movie has definitely made me give romance movies a chance in future and I think you should give it a chance and see what you think! 7/10 – Movie can be found on Netlfix FYI. LEGENDS OF THE FALL (1994) MA Directed by Edward Zwick Starring Brad Pitt / Anthony Hopkins Everything about “Legends of the Fall” shouts epic film making and it is not altogether unpleasant. Bursting with big country landscapes, big music, big emotions, even big hair, this is highly romanticized, old-fashioned film making – the kind of movie where no one rides in quietly on a single horse when galloping is an option. Legends of the Fall is a film about brothers who remain linked together as time marches ever on. But mostly, it is a film about Tristan. Thanks to Brad Pitt and the Canadian landscape it’s the very definition of a handsome film. Brad Pitt (Tristan Ludlow) the blue-eyed boy proves himself a bona fide movie star, stealing every scene he’s in. Brad Pitt as Tristan Ludlow was the perfect big hearted tortured soul that every heterosexual woman in the 90’s thought they could save. Also: Brad Pitt, just Brad Pitt 34 Excite
THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989) G Directed by Ron Clements / John Muster Starring Jodi Benson / Samuel E. Wright 30 years since Ariel first graced our screens as the adored, adventurous, smart and kind beauty with an amazing gift -- her voice. Not only is she perfectly slender, naturally curious and socially superlative among the creatures of the sea, she is the king’s daughter -- a legitimate princess with social stature. Ariel desires to become something she is not. She questions her environment, her body and her happiness. Her curiosity and determination are commendable and she could be mistaken for a strong female character. There are some good moments but Disney’s consistent attempts to persuade you to believe that women should be beautiful, skinny, and small while men should be muscular, toned, and big is a corrupt message for our young people. The moral of the story: change who you are, not simply to be loved, but also to be accepted by others. Nice once Disney. I grew up with Ariel and her magical love story, but is she responsible for my relationship with my waistline and a 25 year battle between my feminism and cultural expectation to find love? ENDGAME (2019) PG-13 Directed by Anthony Russo & Joe Russo Starring Robert Downey Jr / Scarlett Johansson / Chris Evans After the devastating end of Infinity War, Endgame follows on showing the aftermath of the infamous snap. The remaining members of The Avengers must band together and figure out a way to bring back everyone who was dusted. The movie is an emotional roller coaster the entire way through mixed with sad things, comedic relief and the serious stuff too. While it’s a long movie with its massive 3 hour run time, it’s packed full with enough Easter eggs, throwbacks and fantastic cinematography that makes this movie is a must see for any Marvel fans and even those who are not! #02/2019 35

During the events, the students were interacting with the stallholders, seeking advice and some students even shared their thoughts on consent. CITSA provided free condoms, lube, double sided business card with slogans showing what consent is and what consent isn’t and of course a variety of yummy food across the campuses.
