Featuring the recently published book, Whose Middle Ages? Teachable Moments for an Ill-Used Past and one of it’s editors Dr. Nina Rowe. Whose Middle Ages? is an interdisciplinary collection of short, accessible essays intended for the non-specialist reader and ideal for teaching at an undergraduate level. Each of twenty-two essays takes up an area where humans have dug for meaning into the medieval past and brought something distorted back into the present: in our popular entertainment; in our news, our politics, and our propaganda; and in subtler ways that inform how we think about our histories, our countries, and ourselves. Each author teases out the stakes of a history that has refused to remain past and uses the tools of the academy to read and reread familiar stories, objects, symbols, and myths. Kick Wheel Pottery Kick Wheel Pottery demonstrations by Sacred Journey Ceramics. Visit their tent in the Unicorn Forum. James Best Anne Best Traditional Arts and Crafts of the Medieval Period The Society of Creative Anachronism will host a medieval village on the south lawn re-creating many aspects of life from the end of classical antiquity through the renaissance. Learn how you can join our society, master these skills, and immerse yourself in living history, so you can experience “the middle ages as they ought to have been.” Visit throughout the day for ongoing displays of fine arts and practical crafts, including calligraphy and illumination, spinning and embroidery, glass and metalwork, weapons and armor. *New this year, see a demonstration of medieval Japanese braiding technique.
