About the Invictus Games • Founded by HRH The Duke of Sussex in 2014, the Invictus Games is an international adaptive sports event that celebrates the healing power of sport. • Rather than an elite sports competition, the Invictus Games is for competitors of all abilities and seeks to ignite their ‘unconquered’ spirit. • The Invictus Games uses the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. • The Games also recognise the significant contribution made by family and friends in the recovery process with each competitor invited to bring two friends and/or family members to share in their journey, at no cost upon arrival in Sydney. • The first Invictus Games were held in September 2014 in London, the second in May 2016 in Orlando; a third took place in September 2017 in Toronto before Sydney gets its chance to host the first Games Down Under in October 2018. • The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will shine a light on the issues facing our wounded, injured and ill active service members and veterans, providing an opportunity to have a long-term impact by raising awareness of supporting programs and services in the areas of education, health and wellbeing, employment and adaptive sport. • The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 is being staged in the year we commemorate the Centenary of the end of World War 1. The Games will provide a unique opportunity for Australia, and the rest of the world, to commemorate and honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for their countries and to recognise those who returned. • Presented by Jaguar Land Rover, the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 is supported by a family of corporate, government and philanthropic partners. Their support not only helps deliver a great Games, but also builds initiatives that inspire connected, healthy and active lifestyles for those facing mental health and physical challenges. • We are excited to be on the journey to our Games with the fantastic support of our family of Invictus Games partners. Their support not only helps us deliver a great Games, but also builds initiatives that inspire connected, healthy and active lifestyles for those facing mental health and physical challenges. Sports Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will feature eleven adaptive sports including archery, athletics, indoor rowing, powerlifting, Jaguar Land Rover driving challenge, road cycling, sailing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Adaptive sports Adaptive sports closely resemble the standard sports but with some modifications to the rules and equipment to better meet the needs of the competitors. Competitors are generally classified according to how much their impairment affects their ability to carry out the fundamental activities in a specific sport. This allows competitors to compete against those with the same skill level and ensures the success of the competitors is determined by their skill, fitness and tactical ability, not their impairment. Adaptive sport competitions like the Invictus Games help wounded, injured and ill service personnel and veterans overcome their injuries by boosting their self-esteem, reigniting a sense of purpose by providing a goal to work towards and fostering a sense of camaraderie with other service members. The sports Archery Archery involves using a bow to propel arrows at a target from a set distance. The objective is to hit the centre of the target, making archery a test of accuracy, concentration and strength. At the Games, competitors will be permitted to shoot from a sitting or standing position depending on their ability. Athletics Athletics consists of running, jumping and throwing events. Competitors of all abilities may participate, including those competing in wheelchairs, with prostheses, or under the guidance of a sighted person known as a guide. Indoor Indoor rowing is a sport of endurance, power and speed whereby a rowing machine is Rowing used to simulate the action of a traditional watercraft rowing. The rowing machines are fitted with a series of adaptive hand-grips and modified seats, designed to best suit the abilities of each competitor. Jaguar Land The Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge is a test of skill and precision where two Rover participants from each nation will be required to display the best teamwork, cohesion Driving and communication to take home the gold medal. Taking on a Jaguar and Land Rover Challenge challenge, the courses are designed for nations to work as a team while taking the vehicles through precision gates. Though teams are timed, accurate driving will produce better results than speed alone. Powerlifting Powerlifting is a strength-based competition. Classed according to weight group, competitors have three attempts to bench press the bar. The competitor to successfully lift the heaviest wins. Road Competitors will compete in two cycling events at Invictus Games Sydney 2018; the Cycling time trial and the criterium. In the time trial, competitors race individually and the fastest time over a set distance wins. In the criterium, competitors start together and the first line wins. Bicycles, tricycles, tandems, recumbents and hand cycles can be used in these events to ensure maximum participation.
Sailing A new addition to the Invictus Games, the objective of sailing is to complete a set course in the fastest time. Individual (single person crew) and team (mixed gender crew) events will be offered with the Hansa Dinghy to be used for the individual class and Elliott 7 keel boat in the team class. Sitting Sitting volleyball is a team sport whereby, like traditional volleyball, competitors hit the Volleyball ball over the net with an objective of landing it in the opposing team’s half of the court. Points are awarded to the team that wins the rally. Players must have at least one buttock in contact with the floor whenever they make contact with the ball. Swimming Both an individual and team sport, competitors will complete in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events. The first competitor or team in relay style to touch the timing pad at the end of the lap wins. Competitors of varying physical abilities may participate in this sport. In fact, swimming is one of the longest-standing sports for competitors with disabilities. Wheelchair Wheelchair basketball is a team sport played by competitors in wheelchairs. The Basketball objective is to throw the ball into the opponent’s hoop. The team with the most points by the end of the game wins. This sport is quite similar to the stand-up version. The size of the court and the height of the net is the same as in able-bodied basketball. A key difference is that competitors must throw or bounce the ball after every two pushes of the wheels on the chair, otherwise they will be penalised for travelling. Wheelchair Wheelchair rugby is a team sport played by competitors in wheelchairs. The objective Rugby is to score the most goals by carrying, dribbling or passing the ball toward the opponent’s end. Contact between wheelchairs is allowed and happens often as players attempt to stop their opponents and take control of the ball. Players gain points by touching the goal line with two wheels while in possession of the ball.
