In 2018 she was awarded Best Actress in a Musical from BroadwayWorld for Celie in The Color Purple at Theatre West End. Other credits include Ain’t Misbehavin, Little Shop or Horrors, Godspell, Smokey Joe’s Café, and Shrek. When she’s not doing regional theater, she charms hearts at Universal Studios Diagon Alley as Celestina Warbeck and plays in the pride lands in The Festival of the Lion King at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. JOHNSON (Nettie) is a television/commercial actress, model and former radio personality (WCCG 104.5fm), who is excited to return to the Cape Fear Regional Theatre stage! Her previous CFRT credits include The Bluest Eye, Downrange: Voices of the Homefront, The Wiz, and Henry V. She’s grateful for the support from her family, friends and her New Beginnings Christian Church family. MELVINNA ROSE JOHNSON (Sofia) is very honored to join this cast and make her debut with CFRT! Originally from Jersey City, she relocated to Winston-Salem after performing in the musical, After Midnight onboard the Norwegian Escape Ship for two contracts. She is a graduate of New Jersey City University where she received her B.A. in Musical Theatre. Favorite past roles include Madame Thenardier (Les Miserables), Asaka (Once On This Island), and Little Becky Two Shoes (Urinetown). She dedicates this run to her late Father, Pastor Melvin J. Johnson. HERBERT WHITE II (Harpo) is excited to be making their CFRT debut as Harpo in The Color Purple! Herbert is an Actor, Writer, and Interdisciplinary Storyteller from Rock Hill, SC. Their credits include theatrical and film work performing roles such as Bert in Mary Poppins, Jim in Big River, etc. Herbert hopes that you enjoy the show and feel moved by this classic story. AYANA WASHINGTON (Jarene) grew up singing with cousins and learned music fundamentals from her grade school music teacher, who happened to be her father! Past credits include: Hello Dolly (Dolly), Caroline or Change (Radio) and Shrek the Musical (Dragon)! In the last two years, Ayana has started two businesses: Yaya’s Nail Candy and Book Black Women, Inc. ALANNAH McMILLAN (Doris) a Reid Ross Classical honor student, is overjoyed to be back at CFRT! THE COLOR PURPLE COMPANY ALYSON SWANN (Squeak) As a Fayetteville native, Alyson is filled with the utmost love and gratitude to grace the stage at CFRT! Alyson received her BA in theatre from UNC-Greensboro. In addition, she has received classical training from the UK Living Pictures Directing Company of Wales, and also with the Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern Apprenticeship program. Recent credits include, Henry V as Scroope/Alexander Court/Others, Anne of The Thousand Days as Jane Seymour, and The Three Musketeers as Constance Bonacieux. LAUNA DRAUGHON (Olivia) is ecstatic to be a part of this show! She is in the 9th grade at Cumberland International Early College High School and is an honor roll student, SGA Freshman Class president, a member of the Arabic Club and the Speech & Debate team, and a national qualifier for Speech & Debate. Her acting credits include starring as “Ursula” in CFRT’s The Little Mermaid Jr. She is also a member of Covenant Love Church and sings on the teen worship team. CYNTHIA SHELTON (Church Soloist) is excited to make her CRFT debut in The Color Purple! A native of Huntsville, AL, Cynthia currently resides in Hope Mills with her husband, Tim. An employee of the City of Fayetteville, Cynthia would like to give a special thanks to TIm and to her supervisor, Stacey, for allowing this dream to become a reality. WILL HARRIS (Pa/African Chief/Piano Player) is a renowned singer, songwriter and recording artist. His latest album, “A Songwriter’s Journal- Live in Fayetteville” earned him two Rhythm of Gospel Awards. Harris appeared as Homer in the stage play Lillies of The Field, and has appeared in ensemble roles in Porgy and Bess and Amahl and the Night Visitors. Harris presently serves as the full time Minister of Music at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Fayetteville, NC. SAI GRAHAM (Grady/Guard/Dance Captain) is incredibly excited to be a part of this production! Sai is a Raleigh native who has been performing at theatres in North Carolina for years. Regional credits; In The Heights, Mamma Mia!, and West Side Story at North Carolina Theatre; Peace of Clay (Marvin) and The Scottsboro Boys (Willie Roberson) at Theatre Raleigh. JAMAL STORY (Associate Director & Choreographer) A Los Angeles native, Jamal Story was a dance captain and original cast member of the 2005 production of The Color Purple on Broadway. He trained at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre in Los Angeles and holds degrees in Dance Performance and TV/Radio Com- munications from Southern Methodist University. In addition to dancing with Complexions, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Donald Byrd/theGroup, Madonna and Cher, Jamal was assistant choreographer for the Arena Stage production of Senor Discretion, Himself, and choreographer for a Blue Man Group installation. He continues arts advocacy as the chair of the National Dance Committee for SAG-AFTRA, and has written two books, “12:34” and “Toss in the Ether,” both available on his website: http://www.jamalstory.com/online-book-store. She has also had various other roles on the stage and screen, most recently the film “The Crux” (Danielle). When not on the stage or screen, she can be found working behind the scenes as a writer and director! RIW RAKKULCHON (Scenic Designer) is a Set & Costume Designer from Bangkok, Thailand. THE COLOR PURPLE COMPANY BILL WEBB (Lighting Designer) is thrilled make his CFRT debut with The Color Purple! Bill is a native of Alfred, NY, where he received his B.A in Theatre from Alfred University. He continued training at UNC- School of the Arts where he earned his M.F.A in Scenic Technology in 1994. Since 1996 Bill has been on faculty at Elon University where he serves as the Lighting Designer/Production Manag- er for the Performing Arts Department. Other select credits include: Arkansas Rep, Mill Mountain Theatre, UNCSA, Cirque Du Soliel, I Weiss and Bungalow Scenic Studios. JIMMY BENNETT (Costume Designer) has designed costumes for dance, theatre, opera and mu- sicals. With his B.F.A from UNC- School of the Arts, he has worked with some of the top artists in ballet, opera, theatre and film for both national and international productions. His credits include collaborations with Timothy Douglas, Bob Francesconi, Francisco Gella, Mariaelena Ruiz as well as Heather Iler. Select credits include: Le Roi Malgrè Lui, The Master and Margarita, Hoodoo Love and Le Corsaire, as well as holding the position as Costume Director for Cary Ballet Company. KIARA KIRKLAND (Hair & Makeup Designer) is overjoyed to join the team for her second pro- duction at CFRT! She holds degrees in Mass Communications from Fayetteville State University, a degree in Film Production from Full Sail University, and a NC license in Esthetics from Fayetteville Technical Community College. She is the Owner of Radiantly You Aesthetics, located in the Hay- mount area of Fayetteville. Her work spans from The Wizard of Oz at CFRT, The Strange and Unusual feature film, and a host of local photo shoots, music videos, and theater projects. JON FREDETTE (Sound Designer) is a freelance composer, sound designer, and podcast producer based out of Los Angeles, California. He has a masters in Sound Design from UNC School of the Arts, and has taught sound and music at two universities in North Carolina. CFRT credits: Disgraced, The Cake, Murder for Two, The Wizard of Oz, and Clue: On Stage. MATTHEW DECKER (Prop Master) is thrilled to be back once again working with CFRT. Matt holds his BA in technical theatre from San Francisco State University. Some of his previous property credits include: CLUE on stage (CFRT); Barnum, Crimes of the Hart, Steel Magnolia (Contra Costa Civic Theater); Shrek, Peter Pan (Legacy Theater). Matt would like to thank the team at CFRT for this opportunity. MARSHA NORMAN (Book) won the Pulitzer Prize for her play, ‘NIGHT, MOTHER and a Tony Award for her book of the Broadway musical, The Secret Garden. Ms. Norman is co-chair, with Christopher Durang, of the Playwriting Department of the Juilliard School and vice president of the Dramatists Guild of America. Her other plays include Getting Out, Traveler In The Dark, Sarah And Abraham, Trudy Blue, and Last Dance. Her published work includes Four Plays, Vol. I: Collected Plays of Marsha Norman and a novel, “The Fortune Teller.” She has numerous film and TV credits, Grammy and Emmy nom- inations, and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and the Fellowship of Southern Writers. She is a native of Kentucky who lives in New York City and Long Island with her two children. BRENDA RUSSELL (Music & Lyrics) has a unique musical perspective, intimate voice and prolific treasure-trove of lyrics, that prove that a truly glowing talent only deepens with time. Brenda and her co-authors were also nominated for a 2007 Grammy in the Best Musical Show Album category for the original cast album. ALLEE WILLIS (Music & Lyrics) is a one-woman creative think-tank. A multi-disciplinary artist and visionary thinker whose range of imagination and productivity knows no bounds, her success exuberantly defies categorization; ‘unique’ pales as a descriptor. Willis is a Grammy-winning and Emmy- and Tony- nominated composer whose hit songs – including Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Septem- ber” and “Boogie Wonderland,” The Pointer Sisters’ ‘Neutron Dance,” Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done To Deserve This,” and The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There For You (Theme From Friends)” – have sold over 50 million records. In 2006, Willis’ songs were also featured in three of the top grossing films of the year, “Happy Feet,” “Night At The Museum, ” and “Babel.”
STEPHEN BRAY (Music & Lyrics) made his Broadway debut with The Color Purple. After beginning music studies with private instruction in Detroit, Bray continued training at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Working with Madonna, he wrote and produced many of her top-ten recordings, includ- ing “Angel,” “Into the Groove,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “True Blue” and “Express Yourself.” Performing with Breakfast Club, he earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and a top-ten single. He has composed and produced for multiplatinum artists including The Jets, Gladys Knight and Kylie Minogue. Film and television projects include “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Who’s That Girl?,” “All About The Benjamins,” and the theme for PBS’s “California Connected.” Stephen is developing artists for his Soultone label and looks forward to more musical theatre.
