SCENOGRAPHIC DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION DEGREE PROGRAMME PROFILE Scenographic design is Teaching and learning of the master‘s programme Scenographic Design and communication design Communication focus both on the design and the staging of real and virtual spaces and environments and on design and concept development in all commu- nicative process. Scenographic designers present and exhibit. They develop con- cepts for performance spaces and design exhibition spaces. They bring spaces to life to provide a narrative context. For a while they stage and dramatize perfor- mances on the most diverse stages and create the ambience for the communica- tive and emotional impact of stories and messages. The project degree programme Scenographic Design and Communication focus- ses its commitment on theatre and stage spaces, museum and exhibition spaces media and hypermedia spaces, on public spaces of commercial and institutional communication, on temporary spaces and design areas of brand staging and cor- porate communication. The graduates of the master‘s programme know how to combine subject-specific and interdisciplinary interests, theoretical knowledge and artistic intuition, performative and moderating competence with manage- ment and organisation skills. They are aware of their artistic and creative as well as their social responsibility and thus ensure the effectiveness of planning and implementation. The master‘s programme Scenographic Design and Communica- tion has an international focus. Practical project work during studies is designed to promote international exchange and to contribute to the establishment of a worldwide network for scenographic design. You will find more information on the degree programme website: www.fh-dortmund.de/en/fb/2/studium/studiengaenge/szeno_ma/index.php Bilingual degree programme Applicants opt for a prevailing programme language as early as when they enrol in German and English and have to provide proof of the required language skills according to their fa- voured programme language. Changing between programme languages is possi- ble on request and if the corresponding requirements are met. To ensure that for- eign students who did not obtain their university entrance qualification or their graduate degree at a German-speaking institution acquire a sufficient command of German in the course of their studies with English as the prevailing pro- gramme language, they will have to provide proof of these skills by the time they register for the master‘s thesis. 2
18.09.2020 Content and structure The master‘s programme Scenographic Design and Communication takes three semesters. At least 90 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer Even if a prevailing pro- System (ECTS) must be obtained. The degree programme is offered in two prevail- gramme language is cho- ing programme languages, German and English. The master‘s programme Scenographic Design and Communication is offered as a project-based programme, in particular in its design components. The required technical and academic contents of the programme in lectures, seminars, and courses (tutorials) will be allocated to projects. The project-based organisation of the programme is designed to introduce students to the professional activities of scenographic designers through concrete, practice- oriented tasks and practical involvement in real-time projects. Students also learn to apply skills and abilities obtained in their studies under the conditions of a concrete task and to test and reflect them in a real professional environment while still studying. The entire programme is organised in modules. Modules are subdivided into sev- eral courses coordinated with regard to contents and times and defining the con- text of the module and the skills to be acquired. The course offerings per module comprise a total of six to a maximum of ten weekly hours per semester and usu- ally span one semester, in exceptional cases two semesters. The modules of the master‘s programme Scenographic Design and Communication teach the re- quired skills of future scenographic designers as part of a continuous project- based programme. During the programme students learn about: ▪ research and survey techniques and methods ▪ experimental investigation and design of scenographic fields of work ▪ scenographic concept development for the design of rooms, environment and public spaces and for staging – with dramaturgy and narrative structures ▪ presentation and moderation techniques/skills – with a view to the master plan ▪ project implementation of a scenographic design project, including manage- ment, organisation, communication, marketing 3
▪ the academic module, related to theatre, literature and text, art, architecture and environments, forms of expression and media, public spaces, culture, economy and society in theory and practice, history and present ▪ project communication – in all relevant media, design and contents ▪ master‘s project with thesis and presentation and colloquy The final module related to the master’s thesis comprises a range of courses mainly dedicated to the first part of the master’s degree examination, i.e. dealing with the master’s project and the associated thesis. These courses address as- pects of production, directing, design, organisation, moderating. The module in- cludes the discussion of concept-related, dramaturgic, production-oriented and technical questions arising from the students’ master’s projects and focusses on different issues as required: theoretical and conceptual questions, structural narrative or dramaturgic problems, issues relating to the aesthetics and the de- sign of spaces, individual methods, technologies and techniques. 4

18.09.2020 a curriculum including a particular field of the practical application of sceno- graphic design or the design of rooms, environment and public spaces and/or communication design or of academic analysis (academic subjects). In addition, the course of study must amount to a minimum of 210 creditpoints (ECTS). Applicants with a programme of only 180 ECTS, can catch up the missing 30 ECTS in two ways. They can complete an internship over 20 weeks or they can complete special courses. The 30 ECTS has to be reached until the first module examination. Foreign graduate degrees must include a final thesis with comparable qualitative minimum requirements ((German) Diplom or a bachelor‘s thesis). For the registration for the aptitude assessment stage 1, the following docu- ments have to be submitted by 15th of December or 15th of May of each year: ▪ Submission of the “Aptitude assessment registration form” (on www.fh-dortmund.de/studienangebot_szenografie_ma and in the annex of the degree programme info) via mail to Ma_Szeno_Kom_Eignung@fh-dortmund.de ▪ Further documents a) For applicants from design subjects: a portfolio with a minimum of three independent work samples (presentation with comment and description in German or English) from at least one project context: of scenographic design (stage/theatre or museum/exhibition or trade fair/event or set design/media production or virtual spaces context); and/or object, room/environ- ment/space or architecture-related design; or temporary communication de- sign (corporate communications/campaigns or advertising/brand staging context); or temporary media design (performance/installation context, lin- ear and non-linear); or 7
b) For applicants from academic subjects: a compendium of academic re- search or other academic results from the arts or economics proving research of scenographic subjects providing evidence of dealing with scenographic topics. Three-dimensional objects may only be submitted on presentation media (print or electronic). Electronically on CD or DVD (formats: PDF, JPG, MOV, MP4, FLV, HTML, DVD). For dynamic websites the URL has to be stated. The work samples of the portfolio or the research and results for the compendium have to be stated in a list which has to bear a written statement that the applicant has executed the work independently. Results of aptitude assessment stage 1 (1) The work samples of the portfolio or the documented academic research or the academic results meeting the requirements for the programme are rated by an elected committee according to the following aspects: conceptual compe- tence, artistic and design creativity, competence in providing creative design so- lutions, and organisational and moderating skills or academic consistency. (2 ) Based on the aspects stated in section 1 the committee writes an assess- ment of the first stage of the procedure and decides on the admission to the sec- ond stage of the procedure. The applicants not admitted to the second stage of the procedure will be informed promptly of their rejection for the further proce- dure. Aptitude assessment stage 2 (colloquy, by invitation) (1) In the second stage of the procedure the committee will invite the applicant for a colloquy taking place within four weeks after admission to the second stage of the procedure to verify and explore the impressions gained until then. In the colloquy, applicants will be expected to provide a description of a scenographic master‘s project lasting no longer than five minutes. (2) The aptitude assessment according to the aspects stated above will be awarded with an overall average grade of 4.0 or better. (3) Any material submitted will be available for collection from the Department of Design for one month after completion of the aptitude assessment procedure. Af- ter expiry of this period this material will be destroyed in compliance with data privacy regulations. 8
18.09.2020 German or English skills The applicants for the program have to opt for a prevailing program language by the time they apply and prove they have sufficient language skills with regard to their favored prevailing program language: a) German as the prevailing program language: for the study program with Ger- man as the language of instruction, proof of sufficient German language skills has to be provided. For applicants who did not obtain their university entrance qualification or their graduate degree at a German-speaking institution, this proof is provided in the language examinations. b) English as the prevailing program language: for the study program with Eng- lish as the language of instruction, proof of sufficient English language skills has to be provided by the applicants. In exceptional cases, the proof can be provided by an equivalent certificate or document proving the corresponding minimum re- quirements (in accordance with C1 of the Common European Framework of Refer- ence for Languages – CEFR). The respective committee will decide whether there is equivalence. 9

Application of nationals from member states of the European Union (EU) EU-nationals and with EU-nationals equated, meaning: ▪ EU-nationals, ▪ Non-EU nationals who have obtained their university entrance qualification within the EU or Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland, ▪ Members of the European Economic Area (EEA): Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland, ▪ Non-EU nationals who live in Germany and married to an EU- or EEA-national who are working in Germany, or ▪ Non-EU nationals who live in Germany and have a parent who is EU- or EEA- national and has worked or work in Germany, must register online via www.fh-dortmund.de for application beginning in mid- May. German skills Applicants to the programme who did not obtain their university entrance qualifi- cation or their graduate degree at a German-speaking institution must provide proof of their German skills in addition to their university entrance qualification; e.g. by the DSH-2 / DSH-3 language examination (taken at an University of Ap- plied Science and Arts, not at a private language institute), the test German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, TestDaF) with at least 16 points in 10

E-mail: international-office@fh-dortmund.de Applicants to the programme who did not obtain their university entrance qualifi- cation or their graduate degree at a German-speaking institution and opted for English as their prevailing programme language must submit a language certifi- cate (GER) of at least level B1 issued by a recognised foreign language institute (like e.g. Auslandsgesellschaft NRW or Goethe-Institut) no later than when regis- tering for the master’s thesis. SEMESTER CONTRIBUTION A semester contribution of presently €314,38 (winter semester 2020/2021) must be paid for the use of social and student facilities (student restaurant, student hostels, membership to student union, special-rate student ticket for public transportation in the federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia).
