Campo Santo You can not avoid it Campo Santo, the enormous cemetery in our street. Campo Santo is often called the ‘Père-Lachaise’ of Belgium, referring to the famous cemetery in Paris. Until today it’s one of the most remarkable cemeteries in Belgium. Numerous famous painters, sculptors and writers are buried on this 19 meter high tumulus. They had to share this place with the traditional catholic high-class from Ghent, who have built very beautiful graves and mausoleums and family tombs. This is a place of peace and quiet. The founder of Galerie Dewulf, Etienne Dewulf, also found his last resting place here.
Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth In 1874 the new beguinage of Sint-Elisabeth was taken into use as the successor of the beguinage with the same name, close to the Rabot area in Gent. With the financial support of Duke Engelbert van Arenberg they built in two years ti- me 14 convents, 80 houses, the Big House, the infirmary, a church and the St. Antonius chapel. Then they moved more then 700 beguines from Ghent to Sint-Amandsberg. Nowadays there are no beguines left in the beguinage. Still the walled court is a place of peace and quiet, reminding us of the pious past, when the devote women followed the rule of ‘ora et labora’. Nowadays the houses are rentable. The convents are used by all kinds of socio-cultural organizations. Even if there are no beguines anymore (after almost 8 centuries), some of their traditions are still alive and respected in the beguinage: the gates open and close on fixed hours, you still have the lovely meadow and they try to do everything to keep the beguinage peaceful and quiet. It is the youngest beguinage in the world and it’s protected by UNESCO.

Looking for a nice bar? As a young man and student, I know Ghent's nightlife very well. Ghent has hundreds of bars. I give you a small list of the bars that I really love. Folklore, Lange Steenstraat 69 Ghent Folklore is a typical local bar in the center of Ghent. Here you can find good draft beer. Or have a taste of the home made ‘kroakemandelen’. The owner of the bar, Jacques, is a friend of Tourist Flat Dewulf. He can tell you some entertaining stories and truly funny jokes in the typical dialect of Ghent. Maybe you wouldn’t get the jokes, but it is definitely a very nice experience. Folklore is a nostalgic Flemish pub. Dulle griet, Vrijdagmarkt 50, Ghent This bar is very touristic. The staff is not always that good, if I can be honest, but they do have more then 500 different kinds of beer, mostly Belgian. As you can see, you can also drink beer from huge glasses. You definitely have to visit this bar when you’re visiting Ghent.
Café Den Turk, Botermarkt 3, Ghent The oldest bar from Ghent, with a beautiful brown inte- rior and the typical arrogance of Ghent. The bar is known for the perfect glasses of beer that they serve. En- joy some whisky or cognac, or taste a sandwich with ‘uuflakke’, or the head cheese of Ghent. It’s also the fa- vorite bar of some of the members of the city council, who like to drink a beer there after a meeting. Café de Trollekelder, bij Sint-Jacobs 17, Ghent This is a rustic and cozy Flemisch bar from the 15th century. In the course of the years it became one of the most famous bars of Ghent. The central location of the bar, in the shadows of the St.-Jacobs church, is easy to get to. They also have the offer ‘beer of the month’, you pay one, you get two.
't Galgenhuisje, Groentenmarkt 5, Ghent What is now the smallest bar in Ghent, used to be the tripe market of Ghent, where the poorer people could buy the guts of animals. These could not be sold in the meat mar- ket next door because of hygienic reasons. The name of the bar refers to the function of the back facade. It was here that the convicted persons had to wait for their punish- ment. The local bar exists since the 18th century and has been a bar non-stop since 1776. Patrick Foley's Irish Pub, Recollettenlei 10, Ghent A big Irish pub/restaurant like the ones you can find in all the bigger European cities. There are big televisions for watching soccer, tennis, rugby and hurling. Authentic Irish cuisine with vegetarian options. There are still more then 250 other bars in Ghent!
Overpoort, Overpoortstraat, Ghent This street is the center of Ghent’s student life. You have more then 35 bars next to each other, which are frequently visited by students. You will find a lot of bars where you can drink or dance, next to night shops, fast food restaurants and kebab shops. Thursday night is the typical night for students to go out. The Overpoort is very crowded then and the party keeps going until the early hours.
Restaurants in Ghent In the city center you will find restaurants for all tastes and budgets. Brasserie De Foyer, Sint-Baafsplein 17, Ghent In the shadows of the St Bavo's Cathedral and close to the base of the Belfort, you can sit in Brasserie De Foyer. It’s a part of the NTG, the city theatre of Ghent. Here you can enjoy a relaxing and cozy meal in an historical context. It’s also possible to have a quick lunch or a satisfying breakfast on a Sunday morning. De Foyer has it all. De Stokerij, Tichelrei 2A, Ghent Since March 2013 you can have a nice meal in restaurant De Stokerij, which is from the same owners as Eetkaffee Multatuli. Here you can find the clas- sical brasserie-dishes, combined with an original vegetarian cuisine. Every- thing is fresh and homemade. There are ever-changing good wine suggesti- ons (per glass) and an extensive and unique choice of beers. The perfect place to enjoy some good food, and to have a look at some history of Ghent. Amadeus Ribsrestaurant, Plotersgracht 8 / Gouden Leeuwplein 7/ Bagattenstraat 197, all in Ghent Amadeus in ‘’t Patershol’ was the first Amadeus restaurant in Ghent and the start of a good story. After more than 25 years Amadeus has become a restaurant with a unique approach, that a lot of our visitors seem to like… tasty, extremely compe- titive prices, nice environment, smooth service, sui- table for everyone, also for bigger groups and co- zy meetings, but above all a cozy restaurant with a unique interior. 7) Markets and squares There are many kinds of markets in Ghent. You have the ‘Vrijdagsmarkt’, a market which you can find on one of the oldest squares of Ghent each Friday. On this square there used to be executions. The last one was in 1822, a decapitation with a guillotine. One of the oldest markets in Ghent was the old fish market, ‘Oude Vismijn’. This one was in the St.-Veerle square, characterized by the gatehouse. In 2010 it was restored and refurbished and became a restaurant and bar. The great meat house, ‘Grote Vleeshuis’, also used to be a market. Unlike during the Middle Ages, when you could buy meat here, it was until a few years ago a market for fruits and vegetables. Since the restoration of this medieval market hall during the nineties, the building is being used as a place to promote regional products of East Flanders.
6) Museums In this city it is possible to visit an abundant amount of museums. It is therefore useful to buy a three-days museum pass. You can also use the ticket to take bus or tram in the urban area of Ghent. The following museums and monu- ments are possible to visit with this card: The Museum of Fine Arts, S.M.A.K., the Art Gallery of the Saint Peter's Abbey, De Wereld van Kina, Design Museum Ghent, MIAT, Het Huis van Alijn, Caermersklooster, Museum Dr. Guislain, Museum of History of the Sciences (university of Ghent), Gravensteen, St Bavo's Cathedral, Belfort and STAM. www.degentsemusea.be www.visit.gent.be

Everywhere in the city there are thousands of lamps that light up. Those all together form the Light Plan of Ghent. No mix of styles, but a carefully designed whole of spheres and accents. The concept is from the well-known light desig- ner Roland Jéol. In 2004, the city of Ghent won the International City- People-Light Award and in the Michelin travel guide the plan got 3 stars. light festival 2018: 31/1—4/2 2018
3) Gravensteen Ghent To show who was the boss, was what Philip I, Count of Flanders, wanted. That is why he rebuilt the imposing Gravensteen (1180). The feeling of wealth and power that he must have felt in his castle, is sensationally tangible if you are standing on top of the donjon and look over the city. Open every day from 10h until 18h. www.gravensteen.stad.gent
2) St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent / Ghent Altarpiece (Lam Gods) When Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor was baptized in 1500, the metamorphosis of a more closed Ro- manian to a spacious Gothic church was still under way. Despite substantial financial support from the emperor, the cathedral remained unfinished 58 years later. As a result, the funeral of the deceased em- peror could not take place here. Nowadays only the crypt has been preserved from the original Roma- nesque church. The amount of art treasures in the St. Bavo’s Cathedral is impressive: the baroque high altar in black/white and red flared marble; the rococo pulpit in oak, gilded wood and marble; a mas- terpiece of Rubens; the Calvarie triptych, attributed to Joos van Wassenhove (alias Justus van Gent); mausolea of bishops of Ghent, etc… Nevertheless one work is more famous then the others: the world famous 'De Aanbidding van het Lam Gods' from Hubert and Jan van Eyk, from 1432.
1) Gentse Feesten 2018: 13/07 - 22/07 2019: 19/07 - 28/07 2020: 17/07 - 26/07 No one knows it better how to party, then the people of Ghent. The ‘Gentse Feesten’ last for 10 days. Downtown Ghent is then one big party area. Just like the Oktoberfest in Munich, the ‘Gentse Feesten’ are seen as one of the biggest parties of Europe. The history of the ‘Gentse Feesten’ goes back to the ‘Algemene Kermis’ (General Fair). This phenomenon was set up around 1843. This fair was meant to be some kind of thank you for the workers. La- ter the party was expanded with a big dance. Like it was common in the 20th century, the aristocracy and the normal people had their own party. In the middle of the last century, the inhabitants of Ghent preferred ma- king trips outside the city. Under the leadership of Walter De Buck, the ‘Gentse Feesten’ were revived. Nowadays it is unthinkable that it wouldn’t exist.
1) Gentse Winterfeesten From the second week of December until the first week of Ja- nuary. The end of the year is always packed with dinners, parties and family reunions. To completely enjoy the Christmas atmos- phere, this period of the year should actually last a little longer. The ‘Gentse Winterfeesten’ are the perfect solution for people who want a longer Christmas. Whether you are looking for adrenaline, relaxation, craft treats or Christmas clothes, this is the place where to find it.

Near Ghent The heart of East Flanders Ghent lies in the middle of East Flanders. It’s the heart of this province. The city is therefore the perfect base for exploring the very green area around it. The five surrounding regions - Leiestreek, Meetjesland, Waasland, Scheldeland and Vlaamse Ardennen – all have their own specific characteristics and ha- ve countless museums, monuments, churches, gardens and be- guinages that are worth visiting. The river Leie flows through the picturesque countryside west of Ghent (this region is called the ‘Leiestreek’). Here, some internationally known painters found the necessary peace and inspiration to make some of their best work.
