About the College History of the College W hat one first notices about the Mars Hill College campus is the unusual combination of the old and the new, the which they will enter. We intend to empower our graduates for service and leadership within their chosen vocations. M ars Hill College is the oldest educational institution on its original site in Western North Carolina. It was founded by a small group by the North Carolina General Assembly as Mars Hill College, a name suggested by trustee Lewis Palmer (1791–1874). Palmer suggested the traditional and the modern.
