51st Annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts | VIRTUAL FESTIVAL On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Festival Committee and our hundreds of volunteers, welcome to the 51st annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, our first ever virtual event! In an unprecedented year, communities need to heal, and art provides the unique and powerful opportunity to help us connect with each other and all humanity. Imagine going through the COVID-19 pandemic without the connections that art can give us to keep us challenged, motivated and hopeful. Our festival artists have been greatly affected by the pandemic, so we hope you will show your support to them by purchasing their artwork as you also reinforce our mission enabling those artists to do what they do best – inspire us all. Since our founding 51 years ago GFA has been a trailblazer and in keeping with that legacy we’re pleased to be the first fine arts festival to jury a virtual show and award prize money: $80,000 in total, including the $15,000 Raymond James Best in Show Award. We hope you’ll join us virtually as we announce the award winners live on Saturday, March 6th at 6pm. Planning for this year’s virtual festival has been an extraordinary effort that couldn’t have been possible without the dedication, passion and resolve of our members, all volunteers numbering more than 100. A special thank you to the families of our members for sharing them with us – we know how valuable their time is. We owe a great deal of gratitude to our title sponsor Raymond James, our many other sponsors, partners, and collaborators and especially the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County. Without their support, we would not be able to present such a high-caliber juried arts festival to the Tampa Bay area; and this Festival would not be at the top of each artist’s list for participation if not for the amazing reception they receive from our community and the many savvy art supporters who purchase and collect their artwork, aware of how prestigious it is to be accepted. Thank you for being passionate supporters of the arts and helping to sustain the livelihood of these professional artists. Our over 250 juried artists represent a range of artistic styles, mediums, and price-points. Those invited this year include a mixture of returning artists and artists exhibiting for the first time--we love having that blend of “familiar and new” which helps keep the festival fresh. We are also proud to show the work of emerging artists, special needs artists, and student artists as part of our mission of inclusion and support for a diversity of art and artists. Being a part of this Festival and interacting with our volunteers, artists, and visitors, whether from the local community or beyond, has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I and all involved in presenting the 2021 GFA hope you have a wonderful experience, this year from the comfort of your own environment, as you explore, get inspired, participate in artist Q&A’s, enjoy the entertainment, discover your inner creativity, become a collector, or whatever brings you happiness. Enjoy our virtual festival, as we look forward to seeing you in person again next year! 51st Annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts | VIRTUAL FESTIVAL Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Art’s 51st Annual 2021 festival image: This year’s selected festival image is entitled Yellow Light by award winning local artist, Nneka Jones. Nneka grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and recently graduated with a BFA and minor in Marketing from the University of Tampa in May 2020. Her most recent achievement was a commission from TIME magazine to produce the cover artwork for the August 31st/ September 7th issue 2020. The festival image is celebrated each year on all festival promotions, the t-shirt and poster. Yellow Light Statement The viewer is urged to stop, slow down and appreciate not only the beauty of these portraits but the intensity of their eyes and how that is used as a symbol for authority. “Yellow Light”, the focal piece in the Targets Variegated series, combines symbolism and realism in the form of mixed media to produce a detailed portrait of a young girl. The marriage of the bold colors, red and yellow require you to stop and slow down focusing on the figure. She is presented with her face slightly turned to the right and a hypnotic gaze that grasps your attention. The side profile reinstates the idea of authority and control, emphasizing that she is no longer a victim. This is complemented by the repetition of circular shapes that appear to be a target but are divided and overlapped by her stance. Instead, the bold yellow band makes reference to religious figures, metaphorically proclaiming her importance in society and the need for her to be protected. Furthermore, the raw embroidery fibers cascading off the canvas are used to remind the viewer of the real and raw reality and the need to break the cycle. This call for change and the protection of our women and young girls are intertwined in the fibers of the artwork using the hand embroidery technique. Each detail is hand stitched and every stitch is an act of intention towards positive social change and the hope that art activism can continue to spread awareness and protect our women and girls. About Nneka Jones My fascination and obsession with Art are deeply rooted in my Trinbagonian background. For the past few years, I have been using Art as a channel to create a more intimate connection between the melting pot that is the Caribbean and the rest of the world. My artwork mimics our human experiences of everyday life with the aim of capturing the most realistic and pure versions of these encounters. Thereby creating a space in which I engage my mind, hands and eyes to create a narration that is translated to the viewer in the form of a 2D or 3D work of art. In the end, I have satisfied my “cravings to create” and I can safely say, “Goodbye Cravings. Hello Art!” Learn more about Nneka Jones at her website: www.artyouhungry.com/. gasparillaarts.org 12

51st Annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts | VIRTUAL FESTIVAL Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of The Arts, one of the country’s premier outdoor art events, has a rich history in the City of Tampa. The forerunner of the art festival was the juried art exhibit at the Florida State Fair held in Tampa every February in conjunction with the city’s Gasparilla pirate invasion. In 1970, art activists realized that the informality of the State Fair exhibit had brought diverse, high-quality artwork to a new audience, and the concept of a sidewalk art festival was born. Many changes have occurred throughout our 50+-year history. From our beginnings on Whiting Street, the festival has moved from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden to our new home in Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park when . Award money has grown from its original $3,900 total to $80,000. Some things that haven’t changed are the strong and continued support of the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County and a dedicated team of festival volunteers.
