March 15 @ 12pm-1:30pm Connecting through Art | Asset-Based Community Development Symposium Join the 2021 Brant ABCD Symposium for a panel discussion about connecting through art, art as a way to connect community, and art as a tool to connectively pivot during covid-19. Inspired by “spoon room” events that have been taking place across the globe through Covid-19, we will be sharing this space to decorate some spoons (craft supplies will be available to registrants) and engage in a discussion (facilitated by SAFA) about Spoonie Theory, and playful ways we can connect with each other that respect our capacity and needs—especially as we navigate the unexpectedness of pandemic times! Agencies and organizations have played a huge role in the implementation and development of ABCD. We will share stories, learning and challenges that are often faced. Institute at DePaul University. He provides training on ABCD and shares stories from 25 years of experience in communities across the US and Canada. Over the last 30 years he has worked with social service agencies, neighbourhood groups, faith communities, libraries, schools and civic groups in the United States and Canada, helping to build more connected neighbourhoods where everyone belongs. Prior to this Joe worked with people with disabilities in employment, community connecting and self-determination programs. Joe was the Director of Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) in Vancouver, BC and Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked with staff from multiple agencies that facilitated connections and built partnerships with local organizations, businesses and citizens to build on the capacity of community and neighbours to care for each other. He currently provides training and support to community agencies, service providers and neighborhood groups. Participants appreciate the interactive conversations and real-life stories of ABCD in action. Joe’s work is highlighted in Peter Block’s book, Community, The Structure of Belonging and in John McKnight and Block’s book, The Abundant Community. Drawing from stories of artistic past, this panel will explore what it would take to cultivate a contemporary DIY renaissance in Brantford-Brant. Ann organized with PWUD to form several drug users’ groups including the BC Association of People on Opiate Maintenance, the Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society, the BC Yukon Association of Drug War Survivors & the Canadian Association of People who Use Drugs. Drawing on their beautiful storytelling campaign “Reimagine Seattle,” the Seattle Department of Neighbourhoods will be sharing their learning around governmental structural shift to decentralize their work, center citizens, mutual aid, and social cohesion. They will be sharing the learnings and intentional shifts they have made over the past few years, which have been exacerbated in light of covid-19 and anti-racist social movements. This discussion will explore the power of “living systems” and storytelling as tools for social change.
