YEARS
HAYTER THROUGH HISTORY
The story of Hayter, an icon of British gardening, all began in a small
Hertfordshire village with the vision of our founder Doug Hayter. Creating his
first mower in the 1940’s, Doug’s legacy remains today with the factory on the
same site in Spellbrook, Hertfordshire. What started as a small cottage industry
has grown to become the UK’s largest manufacturer of rear roller mowers.
The DNA of Hayter, one of Britain’s last remaining mower manufacturers,
has remained unchanged for more than 75 years: a tireless focus on quality
and innovation, coupled with craftsmanship and engineering, keep Hayter at the
pinnacle of lawnmower manufacturing. Over its history, Hayter have continued
to invest in its people and facilities, maintaining the high quality of British
craftsmanship, design and engineering, which is renowned around the globe.
Everything that Hayter does revolves around the customer’s experiences
and needs, driving the design team to create and innovate and the manufacturing
team to focus on the highest standards and finishes to ensure that Hayter can live
up to its mission statement to be the “Maker of the finest mowers”.

1938 1939 - 1947
Our founder Douglas Hayter was born in The arrival of World War 2 meant that Douglas’ focus
