MAKING A BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL TO THE MARTIN RYLE TRUST The Martin Ryle Trust is a charity that funds research and education on any aspects of reducing violence between states. This includes indirect and long-term steps, such as promoting justice, and more direct steps such as supporting research and education about high levels of militarisation. ‘We should strive to see how the vast resources now diverted towards the destruction of life are turned instead to the solution of the problems which both rich – but especially the poor – countries of the world now face.’ SIR MARTIN RYLE (1918–1984) FEng, FRS, Astronomer Royal, Nobel Laureate, was a physicist, radio astronomer and engineer who was profoundly distressed by the militarisation of science and technology. He devoted his later years to warning about the nuclear arsenals – ‘this incredible situation’ – and to promoting a culture of responsibility among scientists and engineers.
WHAT THE MARTIN RYLE TRUST DOES The Trust primarily supports the charitable work of Scientists for Global Responsibility, a membership organisation promoting responsible science and technology. Examples of work carried out by SGR and supported by the Trust include the One Planet, One Life workshops in schools, and also reports, booklets and briefings on issues such as the environmental impacts of the UK military sector; how scientists and engineers can act as role models; ethical careers in science, design and technology; and the impact of nuclear weapons.
