Term 2 will see a few changes as I will be on Sabbatical Leave for the whole of Important Dates the term. This was scheduled for last year but due to the lockdowns it was postponed to Term 2 this year. While a sabbatical is for refreshment leave it 9/4 - Overnight William also comes with a learning component. My focus will be on curriculum - the Pike Trip Maidstone local curriculum in particular. I’m looking forward to having the 12/4 - BOT Meeting @ 6pm opportunity to pull together all the work done on our curriculum over the past 14/4 - Sevens Tournament few years. Chris Robinson will be Acting Principal while I’m away and the school 15/4 - Ppt Sevens will be in very capable hands! 16/4 - Term 1 ends Last week I attended an Intermediate/Middle School Regional Summit in 3/5 - Term 2 begins Masterton. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with Intermediate and 11/5 - Cross Country Middle School Principals from the lower half of the North Island. One of the 13/5 - Boys’ Football topics for discussion was the importance of Intermediate/Middle schooling for 14/5 - Girls’ Football early adolescent students - education that caters for the very unique needs of 19/5 - STEMM Challenge this age group. As the Principal of an Intermediate I can honestly say it’s a rather special place of learning - a place designed for early adolescents to thrive. 24/5 - Fun Run Fundraiser We’re getting organised for the annual Fun Run Fundraiser that’s scheduled for Monday 24 May. Look out for information coming your way about this. It’s our one major fundraiser of the year and funds go towards purchasing Chromebooks for the classrooms. We’ve had fantastic responses over the last two years and hope this year will be the same. Nga mihi nui Mary O’Regan Principal/Tumuaki Hat Reminder A small percentage of students at this stage of the Term, are not wearing their school hat when they are outside at Interval and Lunchtimes. If they have lost their hat, teachers sometimes have spares they can lend. Hats must be on heads when out in the playground to protect them from ultraviolet rays in both Terms 1 and 4. Please support us by ensuring that your child has his/her school hat for the last week of Term 1 so they can enjoy their break times outside while the good weather holds. Thank you Kerry Baines
A word from our Learning Support Coordinator Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your child’s learning or behaviour needs. I can offer support with contacting agencies, strategies for learning, and practical suggestions to help your child’s learning at home. I can also discuss options for Dyslexia testing, and how to arrange appointments for screening other learning or behaviour concerns. As part of my role, I am available to coordinate the range of agencies that may be supporting your child and family. It is intended that I will eventually become the ‘one stop shop’ to ensure your child’s smooth transition between teachers and eventually your chosen College. My job is to ensure that all the information important to your child’s learning is available for their next teacher / school. I am more than happy to discuss what this might look like for your child, and how you would like this managed. If you have concerns about this or would like more information, let’s have a chat! You can book a time to meet with me by emailing rachael.kneepkens@maidstone.school.nz or phone / txt 027 226 4765 2021 Fun Run fundraising event This year Maidstone Intermediate School is holding a Fun Run fundraising event on Monday 24 May 2021. Awakairangi Games On Monday 23 March, a small group of students were invited to participate in Māori traditional games organised for primary schools in the Upper Hutt Cluster. Each of our students shared leadership of a group with a student from Fergusson Intermediate and Saint Joseph’s. Each group comprised a student from each of the participating schools. It was tuakana/teina (the more expert guiding the less expert) throughout, and our students represented Hinepōhatu magnificently! Matua Pat Inter-Intermediate Athletics On Wednesday 24 March, 34 Maidstone students boarded the bus and headed to the 2021 Inter-Intermediate Athletics. It was an awesome day with lots of outstanding performances. All of the Maidstone athletes had a great day, and we ended up coming 3rd overall on points across all events. We also had some excellent results with Mona and Rhy-leigh winning the Girls Shot Put events, and Bella winning the Girls Vortex event. Bella and Mona both set new Inter-Intermediate rec- ords! These girls, along with a few other Maidstone athletes who did well in their events, will attend the Regional Athlet- ics at the end of the year. Well done to all involved!
