KAM CHA TKA TO U R D U N O R D /6 A travel report by team rider Tobias Woggon and photographer Philip Ruopp. There was no question in my mind: I wanted to travel to Kamchatka. More specifically: I wanted to travel to the Klyuchevskaya Sopka plateau. I wanted to see the sun rise from behind the Tolbachik volcano and I wanted to bike down the mountain against this breathtaking backdrop. This was my dream and I was going to make it a reality no matter how complicated it would be to get there. And complicated was an understatement, as Philip and I soon realized when we set about planning the journey. First of all, we needed a Russian visa. Foreigners cannot simply enter the country on a whim – we needed an official invitation from a local.

We camped there for three days, with the weather refusing to cooperate. Either it poured with rain or it was so foggy that we couldn’t see the volcanoes around us. Months of preparation, bureaucracy, setbacks and, of course, the strains of travel, the cold nights in a tent and the long days in the spartan Kamaz: we had endured it all and now we were finally here, standing on the edge of the vast lava desert with a view of Tolbachik on one side and a view of the far-off Pacific Ocean on the other, with nothing but countless kilometres of wilderness between them. There were only a few more minutes to wait until we experienced TOBIS SETUP the majestic sunrise and I would have the pleasure of biking against this incredible backdrop. READY BE READY BE READ DY BE READY BE READY BE TIP 1: AIR PRESSURE CHECK: TIRES, SUSPENSION ELEMENTS & SEATPOST Anything under pressure can lose a little air over time. First check your tires for sufficient air and for any damage – also /22 check to see if they’re in a porous condition. Nothing is more unnecessary than ending a tour early due to old worn-out tires. If you have a tubeless set-up, you should also check the sealant (sealing milk) in your tires. The milk may have dried out due to the long period of standing during the winter, so you might have to renew it. Also check your rim, axle and spokes for damage and correct tension. The next step is to check your suspension, clean out the air-valves and check for correct air-pressure & sag (negative travel). Professional tip: Save your suspension setting in a note on your smartphone – then you’ll always have it at hand and won’t have to redetermine it time after time.
DY READY TIP 2: DRIVE CHECK Before you start cleaning your chain, you should check it for wear. With a chain gauge, you can check in seconds whether your chain is already so elongated that you should replace it. In the case of a chain, always remember this: renew it sooner rather than later! A chain that is severely elongated accelerates the wear of the chainring and cartridge enormously, and this can get really expensive. If the chain is in order and has been cleaned, you should now check the cartridge, chainrings and the /23 gears. Are all the gears running cleanly? If not, the gear shift cable and outer casing may not be in the best condition, or the tension of your rear gear shift may need to be increased. TIP 3: BRAKE CHECK First, with the bike stationary, check that the brake has a working and sufficient bite point. Then check the friction surfaces – the brake pad and rotor. Check both of them for wear and dirt. Dirty or glazed components degrade perfor- mance and can cause noise due to vibration. The MAGURA transport device will help you to check the pad. Finish by riding a short distance and braking a few times to remove dirt and deposits from the components. GO TO MAXIMIZE Now do a visual check to make sure that all the pistons of your brake caliper YOUR BRAKE GUIDE. extend evenly and mobilize them if necessary. See how to do this on page 26 of this magazine. If you’re still not satisfied with the performance of your brakes after the brake test and test ride, you can carry out more maintenance steps. The handy MAGURA “Maximize Your Brake Performance Guide” has much more on this.
READY BE READY BE READ DY BE READY BE READY BE TIP 4: SCREW CHECK The fourth step is to check all the screws for the torque specified by the manufacturer. A torque tool is especially recommended for high-quality carbon parts to avoid damaging them – because, as you know, the next stage after “tight” is “off”. In this step, also check your headset and, if necessary, your crank or inner bearing for free running. /24 TIP 5: MAINTENANCE FOR THE SUSPENSION ELEMENTS (OPTIONAL) Depending on the bike’s usage and the manufacturer, a lubricant service and a thorough check of your suspension elements is also recommended. Check all the dust seals and renew the internal lubricating oil if necessary. For detailed information on recommended mainte- nance, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and the corresponding operating manuals. For the MAGURA VYRON eLECT dropper seatpost, we recommend an annual interval service.
DY READY TIP 6: A CHECK OF THE E-BIKE COMPONENTS (OPTIONAL) E-bike batteries are basically mainte- nance-free. However, occasional cleaning and a light greasing of the connector poles is nevertheless recommended. Use a cloth for cleaning and do not expose the battery to a strong jet of water. If the outside temperatures drop sharply again in spring, you should store the battery in a room at around 20 degrees Celsius to /25 boost its service life. If necessary, have a software update carried out by the dealer (if recom- mended by the manufacturer). SAFETY ADVICE: ONLY CARRY OUT WORK ON YOUR BIKE YOURSELF IF YOU FEEL CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO DO SO AND YOU ALREADY HAVE EXPERIENCE IN MAINTAINING YOUR BIKE. ALWAYS BEAR IN MIND THAT A LOT OF WORK ON THE BIKE CAN BE SAFETY-RELEVANT, SO IT’S BETTER TO HAVE THE CHECK CARRIED OUT BY A SPECIALIST DEALER!

MAGURA HS – T H E CA R E F R E E B R A K E „MADE IN GERMANY“ When a technology stays almost unchanged for 30 years, it’s either very simple – or simply ingenious. What makes the MAGURA HS the most popular carefree brake for everyday cyclists and even those /5 who cycle around the world? We reveal the secret with a look into the German production. In 2018 the MAGURA HS brakes celebrated their 30th birthday, celebrating the fact that in this time millions of them had gone out around the world. All the models are Made in Germany. It’s a German success story that can probably only be compared to the VW Beetle. Although rim brakes are often believed to be underdogs compared to disc brakes, sales figures have been rising steadily for years. In independent tests, the braking performance of the hydraulic rim brake even beats many entry-level and mid-range disc brakes. At the same time, it’s ingeniously simple and virtually maintenance-free. If you’re looking for a safe and carefree brake, look no further than the MAGURA HS. For countless bicycle manufacturers, it’s still an important component for reliable and attractively priced bicycle concepts.
MAGURA HS THE CAREFREE BRAKE So what is it that makes HS brakes so safe and re- liable? One success factor can be found in MAGURA’s own plastics plant in the Swabian Alb region. MAGURA has long stood for the highest quality, not only in the motorbike and bicycle industry, but also in plastics manufacturing. Automotive suppliers and renowned manufacturers such as BMW swear by our Bad Urach expertise. Nowadays, more than half of the plastics production goes to external customers. MAGURA is the architect of its own building materials. No other manufacturer can realize the innovative materials and processes the company has produced, especially for the MAGURA MT and HS products. Here’s how the basic material Carbotecture® was born – the name is a combina- /6 tion of carbon and architecture. A look at the produc- tion explains the origin of the name: during the processing of the raw granulate, high-tech polymers and carbon or glass fibres are aligned in several complex processes to match predicted loads and thus transformed into Carbotecture®. Carbotecture® is a dream material, but only thanks to sophisticated machinery and processes. All the injection moulding tools used are innovative in-house developments from MAGURA. Huge apparatuses use these tools to form the MAGURA brake masters and pistons under immensely high injection pressure (from 500 to 1500 bar).

Hollow spaces, channels, threads and the smooth surfaces of the piston chambers are automatically integrated into the injection process to dispense with any error-prone reworking processes. The injection-moulded MAGURA components made of Carbotecture® offer significant advantages compared to the classic lightweight material alumi- nium: both materials have identical tensile and breaking strengths – but MAGURA Carbotecture® brake masters are 50% lighter; they only weigh half as much! In addition, the enormous reduction in processing steps the quality and uniformity of all /9 parts together with an extremely low error rate all results in the low maintenance of the MAGURA HS range. The HS brake master body, including openings and cavities, is created in just one process, whereas several steps would be needed to create a comparable component made of aluminium. The critical piston chambers cannot be realized in alumi- nium without intensive post-processing, which is significantly more complex and consequently more error-prone. The individual Carbotecture® master becomes a complete brake not far from MAGURA’s plas- tics production facility. Whereas there are often hundreds of nautical miles between the production steps of competitors in the course of globalization, at MAGURA it’s just a stone’s throw of less than 5 kilometres. This close proximity to the German production site immensely facilitates the agility of the processes and also helps to drive further developments. At peak times, it’s not uncommon for less than 48 hours to pass between the moulding of the master and the finished assembly. To maintain this advantage in speed, everything in MAGURA’s production is automated to match the latest, cutting-edge knowledge. All the necessary parts lie in wait in huge high racks, waiting to be used in one of the production lines in the “supermarket system”. Finished products are usually shipped to the customer after a maximum of only three working days. The production of bicycle models and compo- nents is closely coordinated to reduce warehousing and costs. The slave cylinder has continued to exist almost unchanged over the years, whereas the master and mounting plates have been continuously deve- loped, but without losing their basic design. This simple construction with solid parts makes a telling contribution to the maintenance free qualities of the brake. Anyone who had an HS brake mounted twenty years ago will still know how to operate and maintain the latest generation. The assembly of the HS starts with the manual or semi-automated assembly of the individual parts. Each work step is checked several times to ensure the highest quality – for example, instead of normal screwdrivers, we use highly complex torque tools that check the screw angle and position as well as the torque. It’s not uncommon for a tool of this kind to cost more than €50,000. However, the heart of the assembly is definitely the automatic filling procedure and subsequent leak test for each indi- vidual MAGURA HS brake. The MAGURA developers are particularly proud of this procedure: Before the filling process takes place, each brake is auto- matically checked for leaks with positive and nega- tive pressure, then filled and completely checked once again. Everything is fully automated and has been continuously perfected over three decades. Thanks to the closed hydraulic system of the HS, this is usually the only filling operation in its entire lifetime. Apart from brake pad replacement, regular maintenance of the HS is not necessary, even over many years. It’s the interaction of all the processes and compo- nents that gives the MAGURA HS its accurate nick- name – the “Carefree Brake”. Its simple!

Nevertheless, there are hurdles that are inhibiting this changeover. In an interview with the ADFC (German Bicycle Association), we shed light on how cycling can be further promoted in Germany. /14
50 % of all car journeys in Germany are shorter than five kilometres and, 25 % are even shorter than two kilometres. Urban planning in Germany stems from the times when politics and planning were dominated by the car – and it’s still heavily oriented on motor vehicles. Above all, there’s a lack of cycling networks and the know-how to create them. The topic of cycling promotion is not preva- lent in most municipalities and there’s too little pressure from science and politics. Let’s imagine we have a blank sheet of paper and the authorities have allowed us to create a new city in accordance with our ideas. How could people be persuaded to switch to cycling? With its project “InnoRAD”, the ADFC has a selection of particularly successful, best practice examples from international cycling promotion and presents how these approa- ches can be applied in Germany. Melissa Gómez is the Transport Policy Officer at the ADFC – and we asked her for an interview. /15

MORE ROOM FOR BIKES In these Covid-19 times, the topic of cycling has come more to the fore. Why are many cities under pressure now? /17 The pandemic has shown that cities are not crisis- proof. At the beginning of the pandemic, many road users switched to cars or bicycles and avoided public transport to avoid contagion. The switch to cycling brought the lack of cycling infrastructure into focus, since many cities saw an increase in the number of cyclists and especially ‘newbie’ cyclists, but the cycling networks have not been developed accor- dingly. To discourage people from switching back to their cars in the long term, the cycling infrastructure must be made more attractive and it has to be adapted to the perception of safety. Fortunately, the trans- port turnaround, which has so far started timidly, is gaining momentum thanks to the pandemic. How can the cityscape be changed to promote cycling? It’s all about speed and safety. The infrastructure must be of a certain quality for cyclists and it has to make people feel safe. Cycle paths often run along- side car traffic without a separating lane and dange- rous situations often arise. This is why most cyclists feel as if they’re not safe on their bikes. The example of Paris shows that a restructuring of the cycle path network can increase cycling traffic enormously. A spatial separation of car and bicycle traffic made the cyclists feel safer and uninterrupted cycle routes facilitated their movement. Thanks to this approach, the French capital increased the number of cyclists by 50% in a short time! The use of bicycles on the protected cycle paths even increased by up to 138%. In Germany, Berlin in particular is showing the right approach to a transport turnaround with similar concepts.

With well-designed cycle paths and targeted funding, the chances are good that the roads will remain less busy and the air clean even after the Covid-19 crisis. International examples are showing us the way! Many thanks to our interview partner Melissa Gómez, Transport Policy Officer at the ADFC. You can find more on this topic here: /19
