Do you have experience fighting large fires? Not as large as the fires that we are fighting here in British Columbia. I worked on the Christchurch Port Hills fires in 2017. The terrain here in Canada is harder and steeper. Cedars are massive and when they burn they are like giant chimneys, which can be quite dangerous. It’s been full-on and pretty tiring. We are doing some big, big days. But it’s been very rewarding. We’ve all learnt a great deal and it’s all worth it. The Canadians are very welcom- ing, very nice people. How long have you been in Canada for? Do you know how long you will be stationed there? We arrived in Canada in early August and are deployed here until early September. Initially, we were working in Castlegar, currently, we are in Revelstoke, a city in the south east. Do Canadians fight fire differently than Kiwis? Red nose fever set to run longer for charity MATT BROWN Spring isn’t the only cause of red noses this month as Cure Kids’ Red Nose Day is scheduled for September 28. Traditionally, fundraising had centred around just one day but this year the whole month of September will be devoted to the Red Nose Appeal. The goal is to raise $1 million for Cure Kids for vital health research. ‘‘Red Nose Day holds a special place in the hearts of many Kiwis, many whom will remember the first one held back in 1989,’’ said Cure Kids CEO Frances Benge. ‘‘This year we’re planning to make the Red Nose Appeal one of the biggest yet to help fund high impact medical research by experts committed to actively finding cures and better treatments,’’ Benge said. Funds raised from the Red Nose Appeal went towards important areas of child health research such as cystic fibrosis, child cancers, obesity, autism spectrum disorders, asthma, inherited heart conditions and mental health. Various red noses, including red noses for your car, are available for sale and by donation at Briscoes and Rebel Sport. Red Nose Day will be celebrated this year on September 28. 14 THE SATURDAY EXPRESS, SEPTEMBER 8, 2018 neighbourly.co.nz Spitfire pilot’s secret map surprise MATT BROWN The roar of engines, the noise of anti-aircraft fire, roiling cloud, terror and the exhilaration of liv- ing to fight another day. Flying a Spitfire in World War II in the north of Italy, RAF pilot Robert Aubrey told of his adventures flying over the battle of Monte Cassino to his son, Don- ald Aubrey. The silk hanky used by his father, which doubled as a secret map of Italy, has been donated to the The Omaka Aviation Heri- tage Centre. ‘‘If, for some reason, a pilot bailed out or crash-landed, a map was an important tool to figure where you were and where to head to,’’ Aubrey said. ‘‘Luck plays a big part in war, it’s not all about a pilot’s skill.’’ The hanky joined a much larger display devoted to the brave pilot, including photos, equipment and various other paraphernalia donated by the Aubrey family. The map, that Bob never needed, was made of silk and was sewn into his uniform. Like a lot of servicemen, Aubrey said his father was mys- tified as to why he had survived. Especially as so many others didn’t. ‘‘They were very brave,’’ said Proud son Donald Aubrey has donated his father’s silk hanky that doubled as a map to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. This includes those couples who look to books or the internet for their education on childbirth. Throughout the year Nelson Marlborough Health has a series of courses running for pregnant women and their support persons which includes up-to-date information and research, delivered in a fun, informative and interactive way. The courses are run by experienced midwives and childbirth educators, and include guest speakers and a tour of the maternity unit. Ask your midwife, or go to www.nmdhb.govt.nz/ maternity for more information. Wendy Hardwick Midwife and Pregnancy and Parenting Educator More care closer to home More healthcare services are now available at the Marlborough Community Health Hub, with the near-completion of its expansion this month. NMH Chief Executive Peter Bramley says that the expansion allows for better integration of services. “Our community health hubs in Nelson and Blenheim typify the community-facing service model we want more of, and that our communities are asking for,” Peter says. Marlborough Primary Health Organisation chief executive Beth Tester said roughly 17,000 people visit the existing half of the health hub each year. The new services are: • the NMH Needs Assessment Service (Support Works) • Maori healthcare provider Te Piki Oranga • a GP practice and pharmacy • public health nurses, clinical nurse specialists and district nurses District nurses have moved to the hub from Wairau Hospital, and current patients of the service have been contacted directly. All contact and referral phone numbers remain the same. New car parking on Arthur St provides an extra 37 parks, two of which are mobility parks. There are also seven parks allocated to hub visitors on Queen St. Bring them in when you and your child visit the community dental clinic and they will send them to Terracycle to be made into items such as watering cans and plant pots.
