It has been self-governed since 1849. It was named after James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Its county seat is Winterset, and it is one of the five counties that make up the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Madison County is famous for being the county where John Wayne was born and for its covered bridges. Madison County Board of Supervisors There are three members on the Board of Supervisors, each elected by citizens in the county. Health care in Madison County Being adjacent to Des Moines brings world- class health care to the residents of Madison County. CITIES OF MADISON COUNTY Macksburg This small metropolis of about 100 residents lies in the southwest corner of Madison County and was incorporated in 1876. It was named for Doctor J.H. Mack, who donated the land for the town. The J.D. Craven Women’s Relief Corps #322 Auxiliary was s organized in 1898. The WRC Hall is on the National Historical Register.
