MacKENZIE, URSULA CHRISTA Ursula MacKenzie passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Meaford Long Term Care Centre on October 19th, 2018 at the age of 82. Born on December 14th, 1935 in Gornsdorf (Erzgebirge), Germany, Ursula was a daughter of the late George and Olga Richter, and she had five siblings. She leaves behind her loving daughter Doris Lajoie (nee Ackermann) and John McGowan of Meaford. She was predeceased by her daughter Susie Ackermann (6 months old) and her son Rudy Ackermann (48 years old). She was the dear grandmother of Krista and Brian Wodhams, Michelle Lajoie (Bobby Vandersluis), Nathalie Ackermann, Lucas Ackermann, and great grandmother of Kenzie and Scarlet. She will be fondly remembered by her nephew Mick MacKenzie and all the family in Germany and the many friends she made along the road. Ursula came to Canada in 1960 with her husband Heinz Ackermann after she, alone, fled communist Germany in a hay wagon. She received top student award in her class to become a Canadian Citizen. She lived most of her life in Toronto where she was a babysitter to as many as eight and then went on to become a nursery school teacher. Summers and holidays all spent at the family’s most favourite place, the cottage at Turtle Lake Muskoka. In 1967, the family moved to a place near the White House in Washington DC where Heinz had a job that included him baking for President Eisenhower. After which she returned to Toronto. Then, she finally made it up to Meaford in 1981 to live on a hobby farm with Robert MacKenzie. Ursula had a great love of animals, music, dancing, singing, fashion, and keeping active. Her church was also very important to her. Cremation has taken place and Ursula’s family will plan a celebration of her life at a later date. HOSKINS, JOHN ANDREW John Hoskins of Owen Sound passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Summit Place Nursing Home in Owen Sound at the age of 53. Born on September 7, 1965 in Meaford, John was a son of Jean Hoskins (nee Potter) and the late George Hoskins. John was the father of Alex Hoskins and Jessica Sisson. He will be sadly missed by his partner Charlena Dorion and her sons Devon and Brandon. He was the dear brother of Bud Hoskins (late Joanne), Lisa Hoskins (Steve McLean), and was predeceased by his sister Kathy Turvey. He will be remembered by his nieces Michelle and Lee, and his nephew Nicky. John loved fishing, boating and nature. He had struggles in life and may he now rest in peace. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service at a later date. BARNHART, SHIRLEY ELIZABETH Shirley Barnhart of Meaford passed away peacefully at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the age of 87. Born in Owen Sound on October 15, 1931, Shirley was the daughter of Elston and Mabel (nee Dickin) Dean. She was predeceased by her husband Joe Barnhart in 1994. Shirley was the much loved mother of Jean Dodds and her husband Gary of Red Deer, Alberta. She was the cherished grandma of Dallas Kroetsch and his wife Mandy of Sacramento, California. Shirley was predeceased by her brother Wally Dean. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Matt Foalden, will be conducted at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11 o’clock, with interment following at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford. Family and friends will gather in the fellowship hall at the Olivet Baptist Church to share refreshments and memories of Shirley. SILVERTHORN BENNETT, CATHERINE ‘RUBY’ Catherine Ruby Isobel Quark Silverthorn Bennett was born October 4th, 1917 in Vantage, Saskatchewan, the fifth child of Daniel Quark and Emma Clarke Quark who immigrated to Canada from the Isle of Man. After celebrating her 101st birthday, Ruby died October 8th, 2018 at Riverbend Place in Cambridge, Ontario. Ruby Bennett is predeceased by two husbands, Wilbur Silverthorn, the father of her four children, and Wallace Bennett as well as one daughter, Heather Silverthorn Kumagai (Thomas). She is survived by her three children, Nova Wyse, David Silverthorn (Maureen) and Mona Welfley. She was loved by ten grandchildren, Jason Wyse (Jennifer) and Joel Wyse (Amanda), Nicole Welfley Parsell, Megan and Aimee Welfley, Nathan Silverthorn (Julia) and Rachael Silverthorn Leachman (Darryl), Melissa Craven (Richard), Shane and Paula Kumagai (Josh Culp). She enjoyed the delights of thirteen great- grandchildren, Joshua and Jeremy Wyse, Jasper Wyse, Makenna, Hailey and Reagan Parsell, Kyle, Tyler and Sydney Leachman, Ethan and Natalia Silverthorn and Charlotte and Eve Craven. Numerous nieces and nephews enriched her life as well. Having spent much of her life as a pastor's wife, Ruby lived in twelve different places in both Canada and the United States. She was known for her singing and directed church choirs. In later years she spent much time visiting shut-ins. The memories of Ruby's life will be cherished by her family and friends. A service of committal and interment will be conducted at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford on Saturday November 3rd, 2018 at 1 o’clock. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Meaford Hall Arts and Cultural Centre following the interment to share refreshments and memories of Ruby. HARE, D. MARIE Born in Clarksburg on August 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Andrew Russell and Mary Emma (nee Almond) Ormsby, Marie passed away in the presence of loving family at the Meaford Long Term Care Centre on Sunday October 14, 2018 at the age of 96. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband Carman Hare in 1986 and is remembered as the devoted mother of Ron Hare and his wife Donna of Meaford, Gary Hare and his wife Dorothy of Calgary and Lorraine and her husband Bill Strain of Creemore. She will be the sadly missed Gramma and Great Gramma of Julie Hare and Phil Gorman of Kitchener and their children Hayden and Terra; Trisha and Rob Briscoe of Winnipeg and their children Liam, Hunter, and Connor; and Jesse and Camilla Hare of Calgary and their children Oakland and Tru. Marie is recalled as a much loved sister by Glenn Ormsby (late Viola) of Meaford. She was predeceased by her siblings: Ted Ormsby (late Mary), Dorothy Ruthven (late Donald), Keith Ormsby (late Marion), and John ‘Jack’ Ormsby and is remembered fondly by Jack’s wife Lois of Meaford. She was predeceased also by sisters-in-law Alice (late Everett) Lougheed and Marion (late Harold) McKnight and a brother-in-law John (late Theresa) Hare. Marie was a special aunt to her many nieces and nephews and their families. Family will receive friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E. in Meaford on Wednesday from 4 until 7 p.m. Funeral services officiated by Rev. MITCHELL, EDITH (formerly of Manning Avenue, Toronto) Born in Toronto on May 10, 1924, a daughter of the Late Michael Muccilli/Mitchell and Angela (Natalizia) Mitchell, Edith passed away peacefully at the Meaford Hospital on October 8, 2018. Edith was the loving mother of Dennis ‘Ken’ Fedoriuk and Noreen of Meaford. She was predeceased by siblings Fiori, Adeline, Guido and Pauline. Edith was a grandmother to Dawn (Russell Savage) and their son Dalton and Thane Fedoriuk and his son Lucas. She will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Special thanks are extended to cousin Sandy Vetore for her years of care for mother. The family would also like to thank Errinrung Long Term Care Residence and the Meaford Hospital for their wonderful support. Pat, a resident of Meaford born in Toronto on April 13, 1942, the daughter of the late Thomas and Doris (nee Clark) Scott, Pat passed away peacefully on April 10, 2018 at the age of 75. She is remembered as the mother and grandmother of son John McTaggart (Lynn) of Mississauga and children Scott (Anna) of Mississauga and Jason (Quinn) of Guelph; son Keven McTaggart (Lucie) of British Columbia and son Nathan; and son Glen McTaggart (Trish) and children Christopher (Jessica) and Alex (Simone) all of Mississauga. She was a sister to Tom Scott (Helen) of Meaford and will be recalled by her nieces and nephews and families. Cremation has taken place and a gathering celebrating Pat’s life will be held at the Meaford Curling Club on Friday October 19, 2018 from 12 noon until 4 p.m. A private family disposition of her ashes will take place at a later date. BURNSIDE, WALTER CHARLES (Veteran W.W. II) Born in Toronto on July 26, 1925, a son of the late Robert and Maude (nee Gray) Burnside, Walter passed away peacefully at Grey Bruce Health Services in Meaford with his family by his side on Saturday October 6, 2018 at the age of 93. Walter was the beloved husband of Betty (nee Dixon) Burnside of Meaford and dear father of Douglas of Wasaga Beach, Kenneth of Meaford and Brian and his wife Claudia of Uxbridge. He will be sadly missed by his granddaughters Robin Teabo and her husband Jarrid and Tina Burnside, his three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Walter was a dear brother of Harold Burnside and Gladys Henderson and was predeceased by his brother Robert Burnside and his sister Doreen Jackson. He will be remembered also by Robert’s wife Reta and Betty’s family: Doreen Gould (late John), Sofie Sturgeon (late Vern), Ruby Weiland (late Mervin), Charles Dixon (late Ursula), Shirley and John Grange and Laverne and Thelma Dixon. WHEELER, FRANK MURRAY With great sadness the family of Frank Wheeler announces his unexpected passing on October 3, 2018 at Sunnyside Long Term Care Centre, Kitchener at the age of 83. Frank was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone. His laugh, his passion, his stories, his generous spirit will be greatly missed. Born February 17, 1935, Frank was a retired (and proud) career police officer initially with the Town of Hanover, and then the OPP. He was stationed in Kitchener for 15 years, then Mount Forest and Sauble Beach. He retired in 1990 to his home town of Meaford. He was the beloved husband of Joan Helen (nee McAfee) Wheeler for over 60 years and loving father to his children Rhonda Wheeler-Grein (Steve McKenna), Kevin Wheeler (Wendy Campbell), Dwayne Wheeler (Jill); cherished Grandpa to Terry (Laura), Brent (Courtney), Vanessa, Kyle, Jacob, James and Catherine and Great Grandpa to Peyton, Avary, Kaelin, Declan, Tayla and Jordan. Frank is survived by brothers Ray (Howie) and Laurie. He was predeceased by his parents Horace and Rowena (nee Curran) Wheeler of Meaford and siblings Borden (Dolly), Florence (Leo), Lorne, Doris (Bill), Carl, and Reg. and will be remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews and their families. In his younger years Frank played Sr. A hockey for Owen Sound and the Meaford Knights. He was an avid fisherman who liked to keep busy and was always there to lend a hand to anyone who asked. Frank was well know for a variety of crafts such as his oil paintings on canvass and scenery painted saw blades and his detailed painting of ceramic steins, tole pictures. He dabbled in photography, loved gardening, and was at one time an African violet and orchid hybridizer. Frank will be recalled as a fan of NASCAR racing. A funeral service will be held at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford on Saturday October 6, 2018 at 1 p.m. with interment and committal to follow at Lakeview Cemetery. MARGARET IRENE (SCAIFE) JAMES Margaret passed away peacefully at the Meaford Hospital on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in her 98th year. Born in St. Catharines on June 15, 1921, she was the only child of George Theodore Scaife and Florence May (Davey) Mattlin. Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband William John “Bill” James on April 25, 1983, in Meaford. She was the loving mother, “Mom’, to her son Glyn James and his wife Laurie of Owen Sound and to her daughter Cheryl (James) Smith and her husband Brian of Meaford. She was the adored “Gramma” of her grandchildren Kerri- Ann Smith (Wesley) of Toronto, Kyle Smith (Becky) of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Erin James (Derek) of Toronto, and Evan James (Tiffany) of Tara. “Gramma Margaret” was the much-loved great grandmother of Eileigh, Brynn, Connor and Coen. She loved it when they visited her. Margaret was a long-time volunteer at the Meaford Nursing Home for 35 plus years and the Midas Mart for over 15 years. She received the Peter Francis Memorial Award for exemplary community development in the Municipality of Meaford in 2004. She was an avid antique collector, especially of old clothing. She enjoyed making period hats for herself and for others and embellishing period costumes made by her daughter. She took pride in and enjoyed the cottage at Christie Beach for 62 years which she and her husband Bill built by hand in 1953 being the first cottage on the beach. She loved her home and enjoyed working in the garden. Margaret’s family expresses a sincere thank you for the wonderful care given to Margaret while in the Meaford Hospital by the outstanding nurses and staff, with special thanks to Dr. James Wong. GIBBONS, BESSIE CATHERINE Born in Meaford on September 4, 1930, a daughter of the late Steven and Esther (nee Londry) Guy, Bessie passed away peacefully at the Meaford Hospital on Thursday September 20, 2018 at the age of 88. Bessie was predeceased by her husband Lionel Ariel Gibbons in October 2004 and is remembered by their children Audrey (Mrs. Norman Watson) of Meaford, Edna Gibbons of Owen Sound, Barry Gibbons (Gladys) of Clarksburg and Colleen (Mrs. Steven Spackman) of Calgary. She was predeceased by a daughter Lucille (late Dennis) Markle of Meaford. Bessie was a grandmother to eight: Chris and Heidi, Paul and Michelle, Sheena, Sasha and Jed, and Matthew and great-grandmother to their children. Bessie is also survived by a sister, Madeline Storey of Meaford and will be remembered also by her several nieces and nephews and their families. ALMAS, KENNETH ROBERT ‘KEN’ Ken Almas of Meaford passed away suddenly at Meaford Hospital on Friday, September 7, 2018 at the age of 61. Born in Owen Sound on February 8, 1957, Ken was a son of Velma (nee Simons) Almas-Fox and the late Bev Almas and is remembered also by Ken Fox of Meaford. Ken was the cherished husband of 40 years of Tally Almas (nee Knight) of Meaford. He was the patient and caring father and best friend of Jon Almas and his partner Kendall Doherty and Blair Almas and his wife Sara, all of Meaford. Ken was the proud ‘Opa’ of Rocco, Jase, and Dallan. He was the dear brother of Jack Almas and his wife Janet, Rick Almas and his wife Bonnie, and Mary Almas of Meaford, and Sharon and her husband Derek Bowers of Wasaga Beach. He was predeceased by his sister Brenda Almas and his nephew Josh Almas. Ken will be remembered fondly by his many nieces, nephews and their families. HAMILTON, ROBERT JAMES Robert Hamilton of Meaford, Ontario passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the age of 74. Born in Guelph, Ontario on June 2, 1944, he was a son of the late William and Jean (nee Clark) Hamilton. Robert will be remembered as the cherished husband of Joanne Hamilton, and beloved father of Amy, Heather, and Caroline. In keeping with Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family gathering.
WITMER, DONNA (nee ARMITAGE) In the wee small hours of the morning – on the day before her 82nd birthday – Donna Mae Witmer of Meaford, and formerly of Kitchener, slipped away on Tuesday August 21, 2018. Donna was born and raised in Kitchener, the third beloved child of Harry and Marvel (nee Underwood) Armitage. After decades of rallying in the face of myriad serious ailments, she whispered her gracious thanks to the nurse and was finally able to let go. This dearest of ladies is missed beyond words by her devoted husband Darcy and her siblings: Verla (Rodger), Doug (Muriel), Karen (late Larry), and Rhea (Dennis). She was adored by her children Cyndi, Michael, Cathie (Mike) and Becky (Rob), her 14 grandchildren, step-grands, and their children. A snapshot of Donna: freckles, creamsicles, licorice, Arrow, Newscott, slingbacks, Revlon bronze lipstick, Streisand, Stratford theatre, scotch and soda, crosswords, confidante, warm hands, enviable complexion !! MAHLER, RENA FRANCES Born in Savage Harbor, PEI on January 26, 1920, Rena (nee Pigott) passed away peacefully in Meaford on Sunday August 5, 2018 at the age of 98. Rena was predeceased by her husbands Jim Leslie of Toronto in 1969 and Ed Mahler of Meaford in 2001. She will be remembered as the loved mother of Heather and her husband Doug Brown of Meaford and was predeceased by her son George Leslie in 2013 and is remembered by his wife Susan of Orleans. Rena was the grandmother of Dustin Leslie and his wife Ariel and Sean Leslie and his wife Sarah and great grandmother to Alistair and Scarlet and step- grandmother to Matthew and his wife Tawny Brown and Paula Brown-Day and her husband Troy and step-great grandmother to Chloe and Lexi. Rena was a dear sister to Isabel Tudor of Oakville and was predeceased by three sisters and will be remembered by her several nieces and nephews and their families. RICHARDS, SHIRLEY FERN Born in Meaford on March 6, 1959, a daughter of the late Robert and Blanche (nee Smith) MacLeod, Shirley passed away peacefully in Meaford on Thursday July 26, 2018 at the age of 59. Shirley was predeceased by her husband John “Jack” Richards in 2007. She is remembered as a loving mother by her sons Jeff and John Richards, both of Meaford and as a dear sister by Bob (Peggy) MacLeod, George (late Coleen) MacLeod, Ruth (Ray) Lidstone, Alice (late Roy) McEachern, Murray MacLeod, Darlene MacLeod, Dorothy Harvey, and Ray (Elaine) MacLeod and she was predeceased by a sister Mary (late Pete) Harvey, and brothers Harry and Eddie MacLeod and will be remembered also by Eddie’s partner Donna. Shirley will be recalled fondly by her many nieces and nephews and their families and also by the family of the late Dennis Sadler. A funeral service celebrating Shirley’ life will be conducted in the Community Fellowship Hall of the Church of Christ, 113 Nelson St. W. in Meaford on Monday July 30th at 11 a.m. where family will receive friends the hour prior to service. McQUARRIE, JESSIE MARY Jessie McQuarrie of Collingwood, and formerly of Thornbury and Meaford, passed away suddenly at Cedar Rail Campground in Chesley on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the age of 76. Born on September 5, 1941, in Poplar Grove, Saskatchewan, Jessie was a daughter of the late Edwin and Joanna (nee Mac Fayden) Heal. Jessie was the cherished wife of Bob Howell of Collingwood. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Ben McQuarrie in 2006. Jessie was the much loved mother of Lorie Lynn Green (Rob Howell) of Wasaga Beach, Jim McQuarrie (Sue) of Meaford, and Richard McQuarrie (Darlene) of Meaford. She was the wonderful grandma of Victoria, Joey, Aaron, Chris, Jeremy, Amanda, Shasta, Jodi, Jessica, Chadwick, and great grandma to twelve. Jessie was the dear sister of Joan Hutton (Terry), Ken Heal (MaryAnne), Doug Heal (Cathy), and Dale Heal. She was predeceased by her grandson Justin, her daughter-in-law Debbie and her brother-in-law John. Jessie will be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews and their families. WARFE, JAMES FRASER ‘JIMMY’ Jimmy was born in Toronto on October 19, 1944, son of the late George and Ruby (nee Barclay) Warfe formerly of Meaford. He passed away peacefully at Errinrung Residence in Thornbury where he had been a loved resident for nearly 19 years at the age of 73. Jimmy is survived by his devoted sister Joyce Warfe and her partner Nelson Rapp of Meaford and will be remembered as a very special uncle by his niece Cindy Johnston of Meaford and her daughters Katelyn and Alyssa; nephews Mark Logan and partner Kelly Juniper of Meaford and sons Jaxon and Chase; and Rob and Tray Logan of Bradford and daughters Yolanda, Alex and Rae. KELLETT, ALLISON “SUZIE” Allison Kellett of Meaford passed peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound at the age of 72. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta on August 4, 1945, Allison was the daughter of the late Bud and Dorothy (nee Hiscocks) Francis. She is remembered as a beloved wife by her husband Brian Kellett of Meaford, loving mother to Philip Kellett of Toronto and Sheila Kellett of Tottenham, and adored grandmother to Quinn and Madeline. She is survived by her brother Peter Francis of Edmonton, Alberta. Allison graduated from nurses training in Vancouver, BC in 1968, practiced as a Registered Nurse for over 43 years in Vancouver, Toronto, and finished her career at the Meaford General Hospital. She was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed golf, tennis and pickle ball. She was long time member of the Bruce Trail Association and completed the end- to-end hike of the Bruce Trail a few years ago. GILLETT, MARLENE NANCY “MAR” Marlene Gillett of Meaford passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the age of 63. Born in Toronto on December 9, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Marion (nee Chalupa) Gillett. Marlene was the much loved mother of Krissa Liatopoulos (Tim), Korie Garcia (Gus), Erin Liatopoulos (Eric) and Steph Liatopoulos (Jordan), and wonderful ‘Pumma’ of Kiara, Sebastian, Nathan, and Cora. She was the cherished sister of Gary Gillett (Rosie), and dear aunt of Allison and Dennis. Mar was affectionately referred to as ‘Mumma Mar’ by all who knew her well, as she was just that! She was a mother figure to all and always greeted you with a warm hug and infectious laugh, and even a stern lecture if you needed it. If you became a part of ‘Mumma Mar’s’ life and circle, you always were. She was always willing to help a friend in need, even if it meant doing without herself. Mar struggled with her health the past few years but maintained her sharp wit and quirky sense of humour. HURLBURT, JAMES ARTHUR ‘JIM’ Jim Hurlburt of Meaford passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Meaford Hospital on Monday, June 11, 2018 at the age of 76. Born in Toronto on April 28, 1942, he was the son of the late Arthur and Grace (nee Procunier) Hurlburt. Jim was the cherished husband of Diane (nee Hern-Black) Hurlburt of Meaford. He was the much loved father of Sharon Hurlburt (Mike Hermann), Mark Hurlburt (Judy), Peter Hurlburt (Sandra), and Sarah Venton (Kris). Jim was the wonderful grandpa of Samantha, David, Jaimee, Anna, Kylie, Ethan, Hudson, and Gwenhwyfar. He will be remembered fondly by his sisters Mary Duddy (Ian) and Margaret Parke (Larry), his mother-in-law Phyllis Hern-Black, his sisters-in-law Jan Hurlburt (Allan) and Andrea Weiner (late Marshall), and his many nieces, nephews and their families. Jim was predeceased by his sister Pat Hurlburt. Jim thoroughly enjoyed music and directing and singing with the choir at the Meaford First Baptist Church. He obtained his private pilot’s license and loved flying the Cessna and Piper planes. Jim’s skills and abilities were noticed and appreciated as a theatre lighting technician during his college years at OAC Guelph and volunteered with some musicals at the Meaford Opera House. He learned to love farming from his Grandpa Procunier and made that his career choice, farming for almost 50 years in St. Vincent Township. Family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church in Meaford on Monday, June 18th from 11 until 1 o’clock. BADGER, KIM Kim Badger of Sunnyside Beach in Meaford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound with family by her side at the age of 95. Born and raised in Wilmette, Illinois, Kim was the daughter of the late Walter and Edna (nee Seiden) Maughan. Kim was predeceased by her beloved husband Clifford Badger in 2006. She is remembered as the loving mother of Kenneth and his wife Brenda Badger of Owen Sound, Maren and her husband John Leonard of Winnipeg, Carol and her husband Stephan Tremblay of Meaford, and was predeceased by her son Christopher Badger in 2008. Kim was the loving grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 12. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas Maughan. Kim was a trained ballerina and danced professionally up until the time she graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago and met Cliff. After moving to Canada she earned her teaching certificate at the National Ballet and opened the Kim Badger School of Ballet in Collingwood and Meaford where she continued to teach well into her 60’s. She had a passion for cooking, loved to knit and sew, and was an avid reader. CLARK, FRANK GORDON Frank Clark of Meaford passed away peacefully at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound with his loving wife and family by his side on Friday May 25, 2018 at the age of 65. Frank was born in Collingwood on February 25, 1953, the son of the late Gordon ‘Steamer’ and Verna (nee Johnson) Clark. Frank was the cherished husband of Irene (nee Swannell) Clark of Meaford. RUTT, JAMES B. ‘JIM’ Jim passed away peacefully at his home in Meaford on Thursday May 17, 2018 at the age of 70. He will be recalled as the loving husband of Brenda (nee Wickens) and as the much loved father and Dad of Michelle and her husband Mark Carlson of Meaford and sorely missed Poppa of Alexandra Carlson of Williamsford, Jordan Carlson of Thornbury and Levi Carlson at home, Meaford. He is survived by a sister, Leona (late Jack) Rowley, of London and he was predeceased by a brother Donald Rutt of Owen Sound. Jim will be remembered also by his sister-in-law Krisella Wickens of Meaford. Jim’s canine companion ‘Bear’ will also miss his presence in the family home. Jim enjoyed a wide variety of interests during his life including serving as a Volunteer Fire Fighter with the Meaford Department. He was an accomplished photographer and guitarist who could play anything from classical to gospel music. He was an amateur astronomer and brilliant electronics technician working at the Penetang Mental Health Centre, Edwards and the Department of National Defence. Jim especially enjoyed fishing and camping and anything ‘outdoors’. Cremation has taken place and a private family disposition of Jim’s ashes will take place at a later date. CATHRAE, SHIRLEY LEONA Born in St. Vincent Township on June 5, 1933, a daughter of the late Clifford and Mary (nee Young) Ford, Shirley passed away peacefully at her residence in Meaford, on Sunday May 6, 2018 at the age of 84. Shirley was predeceased by her first husband, Robert ‘Bob’ Morris in 1969, after which time she assumed the role of owner, operator and caring manager of the family business in Meaford, ‘Morris Memorials’, where she became respected in the community and surrounding area for her many years of dedicated service to the citizens she served with great compassion and empathy. Shirley later married William ‘Bill’ Cathrae and the couple enjoyed a fulfilling and active life together, sharing both work and leisure time, and retirement together. They enjoyed over 46 happy years together. Shirley will be recalled as a much-loved mother by her children, all of Meaford, and as a cherished and loving gramma to her grandchildren: Judy and her husband Paul Schultz, and their sons Matthew and Timothy; Terri-Lee Morris and her sons Jason and Jacob; and Robert Morris and his wife Dawn, and their children Cameron and Teagan. She was predeceased by an infant brother Richard and is remembered as a dear sister by Sharon and her husband Richard Turner of Meaford. A longtime resident of the Bognor community and former Road Superintendent of Sydenham Township, Walter was the beloved husband of 57 years of Orla (nee McMillan) now residing in Owen Sound. SALTONOSKI, ALLAN WILLIAM ‘SALTY’ Allan Saltonoski of Meaford, and formerly of Walter’s Falls, passed away in Meaford on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the age of 89. Al was the beloved husband of Lois (nee Young) Saltonoski of Meaford. He is survived by his sister Mary O’Carroll of Montreal, and will be remembered fondly by Lois’s family and by his many nieces, nephews and their families. Al had a long and fulfilling career with Molson Brewery where he was elected to active Membership to the Master Brewers Association of America. Al and Lois went on numerous travelling adventures across the globe. He was a very proud Rotarian and an avid curler and golfer. Al enjoyed his time spent with the gang on hunting excursions in northern Ontario and Manitoba. He will be remembered for his many contributions in the Walter’s Falls community as a volunteer, Hall Board president, and founding organizer for the Walter’s Falls Art Show. He was a devoted and loving master to a number of Bichon Frise dogs, and most recently ‘Maggy’. ALMOND, RONALD ERNEST Born at the Cottage Hospital in Meaford on July 1st 1937, a son of the late Ernest and Elma (Holmes) Almond, Ron passed away peacefully and comfortably just before dawn on April 16th at his residence for the past year and a half, Kelso Pines Retirement Home in Owen Sound in his 81st year. Ron will be remembered as the loving brother of James (Isabel) Almond and Shirley (Dale) Keaveney all of Meaford and by his nephews Bradey Almond of Meaford, Brandon Keaveney (Dawna) of Wasaga Beach and Josh Keaveney (Liz) of Brampton. Ron was predeceased by his nephews Bradley and Kent Almond. He will be sadly missed by his great nieces and nephew. Ron worked his entire career at the head branch of the Royal Bank on Front Street in Toronto. He was an avid walker and square dancer who loved to travel to square dances throughout Ontario and as far afield as Florida. Cremation has taken place and a family service will follow at a later date. BOYLE, ELEANOR ‘BUNNY’ Eleanor, the daughter of the late Norman and Myrtice Boyle of Meaford, passed away with her family by her side at the Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood on Wednesday, April 11 2018 at the age of 77. Eleanor was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Daigle and brother Vincent Boyle both of Meaford. She will be sadly missed as a loving mother by Chuck (Cindy) Murray of Owen Sound, Rob (Lillian) Murray, Leanne (Rod) Harvey, and Trevor (Jenn) Harvey all of Meaford and by her 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Eleanor was the sister of Ivan (Mary) Boyle and Robert Glen Boyle both of Meaford. She is also remembered by her special friend Harvey Fulford. Bunny’s family extends a special thanks to staff and volunteers at the Campbell House Hospice and dialysis department of Collingwood G & M Hospital for their kind and tender care. Cremation has taken place and as per Eleanor’s request there will be no public funeral. A private family service of committal and interment of her ashes will take place at a later date. Pat, a resident of Meaford born in Toronto on April 13, 1942, the daughter of the late Thomas and Doris (nee Clark) Scott, Pat passed away peacefully on April 10, 2018 at the age of 75. She is remembered as the mother and grandmother of son John McTaggart (Lynn) of Mississauga and children Scott (Anna) of Mississauga and Jason (Quinn) of Guelph; son Keven McTaggart (Lucie) of British Columbia and son Nathan; and son Glen McTaggart (Trish) and children Christopher (Jessica) and Alex (Simone) all of Mississauga. She was a sister to Tom Scott (Helen) of Meaford and will be recalled by her nieces and nephews and families. Cremation has taken place and a gathering celebrating Pat’s life will be held at the Meaford Curling Club on Friday October 19, 2018 from 12 noon until 4 p.m. A private family disposition of her ashes will take place at a later date. RAPP, KENNETH JOHN Kenn Rapp, born in Hanover on December 31, 1933, a son of the late Wilfred and Lorraine (nee Procknow) Rapp, passed away at the Markdale Hospital on Monday April 9, 2018 at the age of 84. Kenn was predeceased by his wife, the former Myrtle Boyes of Meaford, and he is lovingly remembered by his partner Dorothy Doran of Meaford. He was the father of John (Marilla) Rapp of Oakville and Cameron (Katherine) Rapp and grandfather to their children Logan and Courtney. Kenn was a brother to Ron (Marg) Rapp of Mount Forest, Dorene (George) Holunga of Vineland, Linda (Jim) Rumble of Southampton, and Sharon (Phil) Zamplino of Ayton and their families. He was predeceased by an infant sister Esther and by brothers Lorne and Lloyd and is remembered by Lloyd’s wife Jenny of Hamilton and sisters Margaret (late Neil) Edwards of Brantford and Mary (late Dewart) Maclean of Campbellford. Many will recall ‘Ginger’ as his canine companion. Cremation has taken place and a private family service of committal and disposition of his cremated remains will take place at a later date. SIMS, OLIVE Olive Sims of Meaford passed away peacefully at Summit Place Nursing Home in Owen Sound on Sunday, April 8, 2018 in her 98th year. Born on July 22, 1920, she was a daughter of the late James and Olive (nee Jones) Maher. Olive was predeceased by her beloved husband Tom Sims in 1987. She was the adored mother of Lin Sims of Burk’s Falls, Pat Sims of Meaford, and Libby Sims also of Meaford. Olive is survived by her brother Barnard Maher of Winnipeg and was predeceased by her brother Ed Maher and sister Iris Shakell. She will be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews and their families. A funeral service will be conducted at Christ Church Anglican in Meaford on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford. BOYD, WILMA ANN Born in Meaford on October 10, 1945, a daughter of the late Howard and Wilda (nee Gekill) Sampson, Wilma passed away in the presence of her loving family in Meaford on Thursday April 5, 2018 at the age of 72. Wilma will be remembered by her beloved husband of 51 years, Wayne Boyd of Blantyre and as a devoted mother and grandmother to Angi Scarrow and her husband Rodney of Mulmur and their children Travis and Jesse, Lori Boyd of Toronto, and Jason Boyd, also of Blantyre. She was a dear sister to Carl Sampson and his wife Sylvia of Meaford and sister-in-law to Marilyn Rutherford (Bev) of Collingwood, Donna Norton (late Allan) of Rosseau, Betty Muxlow (late Cecil) of Rocklyn and Allan Boyd and his wife Betty of Blantyre. Wilma was a special aunt to their families. A memorial funeral service celebrating Wilma’s life will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 Maple Street in Collingwood on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Friends will be received from 12:30 until the hour of service. LOUGHEED, BARBARA ISABELLE Barb Lougheed of Meaford passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Meaford Hospital on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the age of 82. Born on December 30, 1935, Barb was a daughter of the late Harry Howey and Isabelle (nee Woods), and will be remembered fondly by her step-father Frank Bennett (Hanna) of Markdale. Barb was predeceased by her husband Denny Lougheed in 1982. She will be remembered by her former husband Bert Sadler (Marion) of Clarksburg and will be sadly missed by her dear friend Wayne Kitchener of Meaford. She was the cherished, beloved and devoted Mom of Carol Sadler Fox (Lyle McConnell) of Meaford, Grandma of Alicia Fox of Meaford, Rory Fox (Lisa Douglas) of Meaford, Jenny Fox Nicholson (Tyler) of Barrie, and wonderful Great Grandma of Jacob, Oliver, Sophie, Rowan, and Amelia. Barb will always be remembered as a loving mother-in-law by Gary Fox (Sharon) of Meaford. She is survived by her sister Sandra Love of Markdale, her brothers Bob and Mike Howey both of Kitchener, and will be remembered fondly by their families. Barb was predeceased by her sisters Marjorie and Margie, and by her brother George. A private family graveside service will be conducted at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford. A public celebration of Barbara’s life will be announced at a later date.
