FAIRVIEW LAKE YMCA CAMPS Established 1915 Welcome to Fairview Lake YMCA Camps! Dear Parents, I am honored to welcome you into our Fairview Lake YMCA Camp family. For 106 years, we have been building community and friendship, teaching skills and providing a safe and nurturing home away from home for campers from around the country and around the world. Camp has a significant place in my own story. Through camp I found strong role models, learned valuable lessons, and met lifelong friends. Our goal here at Fairview is to provide all of that, and more, to your child. Camp is a place where a child can slide down a ninety-foot water slide, learn to identify three different salamanders, come in 4th in a tick-tack- toe tournament, eat two helpings of spaghetti and meatballs, make a new friend from 3,000 miles away, and see a shooting star – all before heading back to their cabin for bed. Camp is also a place where a child can feel safe and loved, express themselves freely, develop their values and learn more about the world around them. I encourage everyone to come visit us at camp, and see why life is truly better at the lake. Marc Koch Executive Director Y For All - The Y is a leading 50c(3) nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Through funds raised from the Annual Campaign and special events, we are able to provide financial assistance to qualifying individuals and families to that everyone has a change to learn, grow and thrive at the Y. fairviewlakeymca.org/donate 2

WE WELCOME ALL SIZES • ALL COLORS ALL GENDERS • ALL BELIEFS ALL RELIGIONS • ALL TYPES • ALL PEOPLE EVERYONE At Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, we’re for ALL. We welcome campers and staff from around the country and around the world, and celebrate our diversity. Our Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility guide us in creating an inclusive, safe, adventurous setting. Here, campers can grow, play and thrive. CAMP & COVID-19 Fairview Lake YMCA Camps is working closely with the CDC, American Camp Association, the NJ Heath Department and Sussex County Health Department to plan a safe and healthy summer for our campers and staff. In the summer of 2020, we developed a playbook which we used to plan and run a successful and safe program at Blue Mountain Day Camp. As we receive more guidance for the summer of 2021, we will update our policies and procedures so they go above and beyond these safety guidelines. We will provide your child with the safest camp experience possible. Camp provides children with a safe place to learn, explore and grow, and this will be more important than ever in the summer of 2021. Our goals to foster friendships, teach new skills, boost confidence, and promote joy remain unchanged. We encourage families to reach out to camp if they have any questions or concerns about camp programming. OUR MISSION: Strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, 4 and social responsibility.

WHY WE BELIEVE IN A SCREEN FREE SUMMER If you haven’t downloaded it yet, our Family Handbook is a great resource for parents of campers, and parents of future campers. It’s full of dates, times, reminders, rules, expectations, and one of our most important policies we have here at camp: we are screen free. Beyond the obvious that cellphones and tablets are extraordinarily expensive and delicate electronics, and that service is fairly spotty here on our property, there are two big reasons for our screen-free policy. 1) We want our campers to develop authentic and strong relationships with the people and places they physically interact with. 2) We want to support campers in growing their independence and gaining problem solving skills by creating a community of peers for support. Let’s face it, social interactions can be hard, and many kids choose to keep interactions online. This can lead to bullying, isolation, and anxiety. By taking away the electronic barrier, campers spend time together - learning to navigate relationships, reading emotions, building community and supporting each other. Campers gain confidence in their social skills, and are more likely to develop strong relationships once they return home. There is less pressure and more time to live in the moment. We want our campers to appreciate the physical world around them. No screen can duplicate a shooting star streaking across the sky, or the smell of wood smoke and the sound of laughter around a campfire. By keeping camp screen free, children appreciate the sunset after a full day of fun, and the thrill of a water slide race with a friend – something you’d never find on the internet. Our second goal is to help our campers grow their independence and build a community. Campers who overcome problems feel pride, a sense of accomplishment and gain self-esteem – all building blocks for success later in life. Our staff are trained to help campers solve problems - they don’t solve the problem for them. Campers learn to support each other through tough spots – navigating a first crush, overcoming a fear, or being away from home for the first time. This community they create will be one they can lean on for the rest of their lives. There is nothing better than hearing your name being chanted because you’ve finally reached the top of the climbing wall, getting high fives for your first bull’s eye at the archery range, or feeling the refreshing rush of a cannonball into the lake. By building strong relationships, supporting each other and appreciating the world around them, campers are happier, more resilient and will have more fun – the most important part of camp!
