Bicycling from Brunswick, MD to Harper’s Ferry, WV with Mr.Vadney and Ms. MacGillivray (Sign-up for 4 Students) Matthew Vadney and Catherine MacGillvray will escort the first 4 students to sign-up on a bicycle ride along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal [C&O] tow path, from the Brunswick, MD commuter lot 5.5 miles to Harper’s Ferry, WV. Students will ride their bicycles with Vadney and MacGillvray to this historic town and visit the National Park museum detailing the events that occurred in the town before the U.S. Civil War in John Brown’s attempt to start a rebellion. They will also briefly tour the town. Each student must be dropped off at 11 a.m. at the commuter lot in Brunswick, MD, with bring his/her bicycle, helmet, bike lock, packed lunch, water bottle, and backpack. Vadney and MacGillvray will provide ice cream for dessert. Then the group will ride back to Brunswick, MD, where parents can pick up at 1:15 p.m. (See restrictions for more information and rain dates). Restrictions: First four students to sign up. An expert guide from Montgomery County Parks will lead up to ten students on a 2-mile walk along a portion of the Underground Railroad, explaining how runaway slaves communicated among themselves and stayed safe.
