FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: T Mount Aviat Academy he last couple of years have seen many twists and turns as we prepared to celebrate graduation. What is safe for our students and families? What are the protocols? Can we celebrate together? I could 399 Childs Road, Childs, MD 21916 not have been happier that this year, instead of 410.398.2206 (main) sharing seating limits, I was able to share good 877.398.8063 (fax) news. Yes, we would be holding Mass for our www.MountAviat.org graduates, and yes the whole school was invited! As I watched the faces of our younger students in awe of the graduates as they processed down the aisle in their gowns—and saw our devoted Oblate BOARD OF TRUSTEES Sisters including Sr. Mary Vincent out of the corner of my eye—I truly Eric Palm, Chairman felt we had come full circle. MAA AWARDED MARYLAND PREK GRANT F or many years, Maryland has been developing the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, a landmark piece of legislation that includes comprehensive changes to Maryland’s early childhood and public schools; the legislation passed in 2021. According to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), funding will be increased by $3.8 billion each year over the next 10 years, and the Blueprint will “enrich student experiences, accelerate student outcomes and improve the overall quality of education in Maryland.” Further, MSDE states, “Recognizing that the early years are the most critical period for brain development and set the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future emphasizes equitable early education opportunities that prepare all children for school and overall success.” A key component of the plan is to continue to allow families the option of choosing the best learning environment for their children at the PreK3 and PreK4 levels. Mount Aviat has been awarded a Maryland PreK Grant for the 2022-23 school year. Mount Aviat is the first private provider in Cecil County to be approved to receive funding for families who live in Maryland and meet the income eligibility requirement. After considerable consultation and exploration, Mount Aviat believes this program will secure the school’s future and allow the Sisters and staff to touch the lives of more children in the community. For the first year (2022-2023), MAA will open a PreK3 program that will enroll up to 20 children. The school will also encourage MAA families enrolled in its PreK4 program to check to see if they are eligible to have tuition covered through this funding. The PreK3 program will be open to children eligible for the grant as well as MAA siblings. For more information, visit www.mountaviat.org or contact Admissions@mountaviat.org. OBLATE UPDATE: SALESIAN JUBILEE CELEBRATION E xcitement is building in the Oblate communities as they Like Jane, may we all find our strength in a gentle, loving celebrate their Salesian Jubilee: the 400th anniversary of heart. the death of St. Francis de Sales (1622) and the 450th Save the date for the Live Jesus Conference hosted at anniversary of the birth of St. Jane de Chantal (1572). This St. Margaret of Scotland on December 3. To learn more international celebration includes all who follow the counsels of about the Jubilee Celebration, visit www.oblates.org/ beloved father, St. Francis de Sales. double-jubilee. The lives of these two saints intertwined, offering a wonderful model to follow. Jane Frémyot de Chantal, wife, mother, and widow, loved her family passionately. Becoming the foundress and mother to the Visitation Order did nothing to “Nothing is so strong diminish this love. Her union of hearts with her spiritual father, Francis de Sales, and her daughters of the Visitation were a as gentleness, natural progression from this ardent familial love. What a gift nothing so gentle to the Church! She venerated Francis as her spiritual guide and recognized that he had a unique spiritual gift for the world. That as real strength.” is certainly true and is the reason for celebrating this Jubilee. St Francis de Sales What Francis taught and preached, Jane lived. What he 1622-2022 imagined, she built. What he dreamt, she fashioned. Within their unity of hearts, a new sort of spirituality came to light. A partnership, a two-sided male and female philosophy, ushered in a modern view of the spiritual life. Francis de Sales taught the universal call to holiness. Jane de Chantal lived it and gave it flesh. All of this prepared Mother de Chantal to be the torchbearer of Salesian spirituality upon Francis’s death in 1622. It is no coincidence that we are celebrating a double jubilee, the death of Francis and the birth of Jane. With Francis’s death, Jane was born to something new. It was up to her to continue expanding the Visitation and solidifying the place of Salesian spirituality in the world. She did this in an amazing way. It is hard to imagine how she managed to found so many monasteries, especially considering how difficult travel was and how complicated the Church and society were. Like Francis, she wrote and received many letters. Since Salesian spirituality guides relations with one another, she would tell her Sisters, “Deal with one another, dear friends, with a care that is genuine, loving and gentle.” Jane saw a unity in our approach to God and those around us. If God is the center, all falls in place. Jane de Chantal was the embodiment of all Francis had lived and taught. As the celebration of the 450th anniversary of her birth draws near, we all can draw from her strength, her wisdom, her motherliness, and her innate goodness. Celebrating the 400th Anniversary During this Jubilee year, the Oblate Sisters have chosen a maxim of St. Francis de Sales to be their byword; one that they of the death of N EC P LU plan to explore with their school communities. “Nothing is so St Francis de Sales SN EC N M US I strong as gentleness and nothing is so gentle as real strength.” The Aviat Link ~ SUMMER 2022 5
GRANDPARENTS RETURN TO MAA IN RECORD NUMBERS F or those of you who know MAA well, you know that Grandparents’ Day is a huge event each Spring where all grandparents are welcomed and visit for the day–which includes a beautiful Mass, classroom visits, a luncheon, and a show! However, the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of Grandparents’ Day back in 2020 and then with restrictions still in place, the event was held as a drive through in 2021 with classes cheering on grandparents as they drove around the carpool lane. This year, staff were determined to provide an in-person event for grandparents. Thus, the idea was born for an all-grades showcase where grandparents could visit for a show and have the opportunity to see each class perform. The show was a huge success with almost 250 grandparents in attendance! Performances ranged from religious to historical to Disney-inspired with musical guest Mario Padovani joining on piano, Dawn Preske on ukulele, and grandparent Chris Norman also on piano for fourth grade’s American Anthem. Third graders performed their own song, “Thank You for Being a Grandparent,” to the tune of the Golden Girls theme song, “Thank You for Being a Friend.” Sixth graders performed a touching “Prayer for Tomorrow,” but quickly pivoted for a fun-filled rendition of the Cha Cha Slide. The eighth graders closed out the show with “Take Me Home (Country Roads).” Grandparents and grandchildren reunited on the school grounds for some treats and play time on the recess fields before calling it a day. 6 Mount Aviat Academy

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: MEET PATTI MALONEY, building during our recess. It’s the same hill I’m walking now at the age of 70—much slower than 65 years ago. There MOUNT AVIAT ACADEMY CLASS OF 1970 was no grade school then, but I did come back to attend high school from 1966 through 1970. MAA was an all-girls college preparatory school at the time and the curriculum was based on that premise. During preparation for the Christmas bazaar, the students gathered crows feet from the woods and we made garland to string around the school. It was a sight to behold and very special to the student body. We studied, had service hours, helped the Sisters, and truly learned to live the Salesian spirit. Those are days that I remember fondly. Throughout the years, my own son attended Mount Aviat, as well as his son, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Our family’s commitment was because we recognized the hard work, support, and kindness of the Sisters; the serene environment in which to learn; the value of a community built on faith; and respect toward one another. Even as I dropped my grandson off at school in the mornings, I never hesitated to walk slowly back to my car, take in the beautiful surroundings, breathe deeply, and say a silent prayer. He graduated this year, but I will continue to support Mount Aviat and the Sisters that have dedicated their lives in the hope of giving children the foundation for a good life. The Aviat Foundation, the endowment fund that was established in 2006, continues to support the mission of Mount Aviat Academy. We are grateful to the donors who have generously given to the Aviat Foundation; their gifts have supported the Oblate Sisters’ efforts to offer an educational environment that promotes high academic standards and instills the principles of scholarship, citizenship, and service in the minds and hearts of students. This is the 16th year that the Aviat Foundation has contributed to the school’s operating budget. This year’s disbursement totaled $65,000. Since its first payment to MAA in 2006, the Foundation has contributed a total of $696,605 to the school’s budget. The Foundation’s contributions continue to support the needs identified by MAA’s long-range plan, including Supporting Catholic Values, Superior Staffing, Modern Facilities, Academic Programs, and Maintaining Affordable Tuition. The Aviat Foundation Board remains committed to growing this investment while generating income that is critical to the school’s operations. Karen Novak has joined MAA as the Director of Advancement and will be focusing on growing the endowment. You can read more about Karen in this issue of The Aviat Link. Through the generosity of the Gempesaw/Albay family, an endowed scholarship was established in 2021. The scholarship will provide tuition assistance to school families with a financial need. The first scholarship will be awarded in the 2022- 2023 school year. Additional contributions may be made to the scholarship fund by other individuals or organizations. For more information, contact Sr. John Elizabeth at principal@mountaviat.org. The Haverford Trust Company continues to manage the Foundation’s assets. Haverford has a strong history of working with non-profit and Catholic school endowments. If you have any questions about the Aviat Foundation, The Haverford Trust Company, or how you may become more involved in supporting the needs of the Oblate Sisters and Mount Aviat Academy, please don’t hesitate to contact Aviat Foundation Chair, Brenda Hendron at 410.920.6399 or hendronb@comcast.net.
