SPRING 2018 We are Growing Jewish Healthcare Center Eisenberg Assisted Living 629 Salisbury Street 631 Salisbury Street New home of JHC’s Hospice and Homecare Offices - 646 Salisbury Street
JHC CAMPUS NEWS By now you may have heard that the JHC has purchased 646 Salisbury Street, former site of Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JF & CS). JF & CS has been at this location for the past 10 years. Permitting was approved by the City of Worcester on February 12, 2018. We anticipate a closing around April 1st. JF & CS will then relocate. Our plan is to move JHC Hospice and HomeCare to this new location, literally Steve Willens Joel Greenberg Chief Executive Officer across the street. President We have approximately 20 administrative employees that will occupy the building. This will significantly reduce the current overcrowded situation at the Home. In keeping with the residential nature of the building, this will be office personnel only, typically working Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. All of the therapy staff that delivers these clients’ clinical services will see their patients wherever they reside in the community. These two programs have a very bright future as part of the Jewish Healthcare Center’s array of services. SAVE THE DATE ANNUAL MEETING Wednesday, June 20, 2018 @ 5:30 PM Current President’s Club, Annual Members, and Life Members are invited to join us for the ANNUAL MEETING at Congregation Beth Israel Join our new email Newsletter! Go to www.jewishhealthcarecenter.com and click on “Sign up for Newsletter” eCards ~ Send a message to a patient! Changing Places After 23 1/2 years at JHC, Anne Marie Jette, Director of Clinical Services retired at the end of 2017. Anne’s concentration was always on the clinical care, while Steve Willens handled the financial side. Anne was responsible for setting up our Subacute, Hospice, HomeCare, and PrivateCare programs. Vinny Librandi, Eisenberg Executive Director, has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer at the Home to take over many of Anne’s former responsibilities through reorganization. Anne’s daily presence and expertise will be greatly missed. We wish her well splitting her time between Spencer and Florida. Spring 2018 3 Jewish Healthcare Center
Eisenberg Assisted Living - Vitalize 360 In November 2017, the Eisenberg Assisted Living Residence introduced an exciting personalized wellness coaching program entitled Vitalize 360. Vitalize 360 is designed to promote and support individuals in their pursuit of optimal wellness. At the core of the program, it asks participants to identify what matters most to them so that they can live their best lives, by their definition, and vibrantly age in place. Vitalize 360 does not just look at one aspect of an individual. It embraces a holistic (i.e., 360 degree) approach to a person’s well-being. Vitalize 360 makes a commitment to the concept of total health and incorporates various dimensions of wellness including: physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual and social facets of well-being. Each Vitalize 360 participant is paired with a coach. The coach and resident establish a meaningful rapport through conversations that are built on trust, honesty and positive regard. It is through this collaboration, that the coach supports the resident in the development of a fulfilling Vitalize Plan which is designed to inspire new achievements and foster a meaningful and active life. Vitalize 360 employs an interdisciplinary team approach. Every member of the staff from every division within the Eisenberg is involved in fully supporting the residents in the pursuit of their Vitalize Goal(s). In December 2017, a pilot group of 9 residents and 7 coaches (members of the Leadership team) comprised an initial pilot group to launch the program. The Eisenberg is committed to bring forth a new culture that puts in the forefront of people’s minds “What matters Most to You?” Stay tuned for updates as this exciting new program! Enhancing Our Fifth Avenue Neighborhood and Learning about Our Residents About a year ago, a team of staff from the Fifth Avenue (Alzheimer/Dementia Care Neighborhood) was just getting the bulk of a large project completed that would help us, and anyone caring for our residents, know something about each resident’s story. We embarked on collecting a short story and a picture of each resident to frame and hang outside each resident door. This was an undertaking that was well worth the effort, as even those of us who have worked at JHC for a long time were surprised to discover things we didn’t know about our residents. Each story is a few paragraphs, and gives staff something to talk about with residents, a conversation starter and a way to relate to these amazing folks we care for and work with each day. We discovered one resident’s husband proposed on their second date, and another met and was friendly with famous musicians. We found out that some residents were known in their families for things they said often, or a beloved recipe. We learned about life long careers, many of our residents were nurses in healthcare. These little details make a difference in how we view people. We can all relate to the idea of a marriage proposal being exciting, or the thrill of meeting a talented artist, or the an- ticipation of a dish only a certain family member can make, or that thing that your dad always says in times when you are in need of comfort. These framed stories came with some pictures, some from the 1940s, some beloved photos from a holiday, some from a fairly recent time in a family home, and some with pets. The connection we can share from these is palpable, and over a year later, as new residents come to the neighborhood, we look to placing this story in front of their doors to share a little tidbit from their lives. Introducing JHC’s New Family Advisory Council In November 2017, we had our first official meeting of the Family Advisory Council for 3rd and 5th floor residents. Turnout was excellent and family members were extremely pleased to be given the opportunity to meet as a group and to be an active part of their loved ones community here at JHC. Family members met other family members, they discussed ways in which they would like to contribute to 3rd and 5th floor residents. The Advisory Council held a New Year card event for Our Troops. 199 cards were sent to Opera- tion Gratitude to distribute to US troops overseas. A Valentines event was held on February 3, 2018, in which residents and families decorated valentine’s day cards for JHC staff. Lynn, Ann, Brenda and Alexis would like to thank all family members who are currently attending the Family Advisory Council meetings and participating in the planned events. Famly members and loved ones of residents make this Council possible!! Contact Alexis Silver to learn when the next Family Advisory Council meeting will take place. JHC PRIVATECARE It’s hard to believe JHC PrivateCare has been up and running for almost 4 years! The program is busy and growing, but what consistently amazes me is my staff. I have great personal pride in each and everyone who brings their specific strengths to the clients and their families. Natalie worked as a housekeeper in the Healthcare Center and put herself through the Certified Nursing Assistant training program. Her very first client as a CNA was in fact a woman on Hospice. Natalie’s kindness and compassion meant more than she’ll ever know to this woman and the impres- sion she made will never be forgotten by that family. Joyce is an experienced CNA. When she works for you, she runs the show. As a manager, I know I don’t have to worry about anything when Joyce is on the case. Laura brings her experience in activities to helping her clients. She has a lot of energy and keeps her clients busy and engaged. It is clear that Laura loves what she does. These are only a few examples of the types of quality people who work for JHC PrivateCare. Our CNAs and Home Health Aides are truly the best in the business, and I can say with confidence that JHC PrivateCare provides care above the rest! PrivateCare offers Certified Nurses Aides and Home Health Aides who provide in home assistance to our clients with personal care, housekeeping and transportation/errands. Although run on a private pay path, it is often covered by Long Term Care Insurance. Medical health insurance does not pay for PrivateCare. I welcome you to call me for more information. Kim Willens LSW, JHC PrivateCare Coordinator 508-713-0585. Annual Worcester Florida Reunion 2018 Steve Willens recently attended the Friends of Worcester Florida Reunion in Delray Beach. Over 100 friends gathered to renew acquaintances. Once again, Marvin and Marilyn Shreiar stepped up with a lead donation of $2,500 for the Home. Another $500 was received as well. Steven Schimmel from the Worcester Jewish Federation and Rabbi Valerie Cohen from Temple Emanuel Sinai were on hand to bring greetings as well. The family of the late Rabbi Baruch Goldstein of Congregation Beth Israel was there to bring back memories of the Rabbi, and read one of his final writings. A Message from our Auxiliary President, Lois Singer OUR LEGACY For ninety-plus years, The Auxiliary of the Jewish Healthcare Center has main- tained a strong presence in the “Home” and the Worcester community. In the begin- ning years, it was a time when organizations and volunteerism were thriving. There was a strong sense of giving back to the community and selflessly helping those in need. It was simply a way of life to join the Auxiliary and become an active participant and volunteer for the good of the residents and the Home. Our premise has always been “We Can, We Will, and We Did” throughout the years. From taking care of orphans and the elderly, sewing clothes and linens, educating children, fundraising for the needs of the residents, to helping with the multiple moves across the City. The Auxiliary was always there. Among the many purchases provided by the Auxiliary was the first van to transport residents, and the first computers for the business office. In addition, the tapestry in the Chapel, the Comfort Quilt, and the Tile Wall in the lobby are all beautiful, and a testament to the volunteers who did the work and made these projects possible. Wherever you look in the Healthcare Center, the Auxiliary’s presence is seen and felt. Change comes like shifting sands. Demographic changes, more senior resi- dents spending extended periods of time in warmer climates, and moves to the sub- urbs for younger families, have impacted our membership base. It is not the strong, thriving and active Auxiliary as it had been in the past years. In order for us to keep up with these changing times, the Auxiliary must update its image, including how to continue to support the Healthcare Center and continue to be a viable and visible or- ganization. We intend to always be “The Heart of the Home”, and with your support and suggestions, we will go forward and continue our great legacy in new ways that meet the needs of the Healthcare Center and the residents.
