Dinner will be on your own at the Cottage restaurant. Accom m odation: Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages (B, L) DAY 3 NAIROBI to SAMBURU After breakfast, we begin our exciting Safari adventure in Kenya, driving to Sam buru National Reserve, and checking into Larsen’s Cam p in time for lunch. The Lodge is situated inside the reserve which offers the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife and bird life which has m uch to do with the “River of Brown Water” (Uaso Nyiro in the Sam buru language), fed by rains in the far-off Aberdare ranges. Acacia trees, doum palm s and m swaki (the toothbrush tree) provide balanced habitat for the vast variety of gam e. This afternoon we embark on our first exciting gam e drive in Kenya .
DAYS 4-5 SAM BURU In our two full days in Sam buru National Reserve we will have two GAM E DRIVES each day, with an opportunity to see the fam ous big five and other w ildlife, som e found only here; like the long necked Gerenuk, Antelope, Som ali Ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra, Majestic Beisa Oryx and the Reticulated Giraffe, perhaps we will be lucky and get a glim pse of Africa’s fam ous w ild dogs. We will also visit the nearby Sam buru Village if we were not able to do it on our first day. The Cam p offers m odern luxury tents with a private view over the river banks rich with wildlife. Each evening of our 3-night stay here, we will gather to entertain each other with stories of what we have seen and experienced during our gam e drives that day. Accom m odation: Larsen’s Cam p (3 nights) (B,L,D) DAY 6 SAM BURU to SW EETW ATERS To break up the long drive from Sam buru to Elementeita we will do a one-night stopover at Sweetwaters Serena tented cam p in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Tim e perm itting we will stop on the way at Mount Kenya Safari Club to visit the anim al orphanage (a.k.a. the best adult petting zoo ever!), where As You Like It (Safaris) Inc. is a sponsoring m ember. After our visit we continue on to Sweetwaters, arriving for lunch before an afternoon gam e drive. One night will not be enough, and we will wish w e could stay longer, but we m ust continue tomorrow on our journey south toward the Mara. Accom m odation: Sweetwaters Serena (1 night) (B,L,D) DAY 7 SW EETW ATERS to LAKE ELEM ENTEITA SOYSAM BU CONSERVANCY Today we drive across and down into the Great Rift Valley. Along the way we will see how the people live, their farm s, their m arkets, their daily existence. By m id day we reach Lake Elem enteita and our lodge for the next two nights. Hopefully we will find the fam ous pink flam ingos that wade in the shallow shores together with m ultitudes of pelicans and a wide variety of other birds. Leopard can be found in the Conservancy, as well as buffalo and other gam e.
Uniquely situated on the shoreline of sapphire-blue Lake Elmenteita where hundreds of thousands of birds congregate, the small and exclusive Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp in Kenya opened in July 2011. This area of breathtaking beauty, also home to many rare species of animals, is less than two hours’ drive from Nairobi and just a short distance to the famous Flamingo filled Lake Nakuru. Evocatively styled to echo the area’s rich history, our safari camp blends aristocratic elegance with modern luxury and will offer cuisine and service of fittingly high standards. DAY 8 ELEM ENTEITA Another relaxed day in Elm enteita, driving in the Conservancy gam e viewing, swim m ing in the inviting pool, walking in their beautiful gardens, and bird watching will be phenom enal. Perhaps you will want to pam per yourself with an optional m assage in the cam p’s lovely spa, in between the twice daily gam e drives, of course. Often overlooked by people rushing from Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru, the area around Lake Elmenteita and up into the lower foothills of the Aberdare range offers some off-the-beaten-track destinations such as Kariandusi prehistoric site and other activities, including first-rate wildlife viewing, which take advantage of the pretty, lightly wooded hills and lush valley of the Malewa River. In addition, several top-end lodges provide an intimate alternative to their more touristy cousins around lakes Nakuru and Naivasha. Accom m odation: Elem enteita Serena Cam p (2 nights) (B,L,D) DAY 9 ELEMENTEITA to M AASAI M ARA Early this m orning we continue our Kenya odyssey, as we journey to the M ara Triangle. After a rough ride on a tough road, we will check in for lunch, and be shown to our room s in the M ara Serena Safari Lodge. After a rest, and m aybe a swim , we will have our cup of ‘afternoon tea’ (or coffee) and, if we feel like it, head out for an afternoon gam e drive. Our lodge has one of the m ost spectacular views im aginable across the vast plains, forests and rivers that m ake up the Maasai Mara – one of the world’s richest wildlife sanctuaries. Seasoned safari travelers, travel writers, documentary makers and researchers often admit that the Maasai Mara is one of their favorite places. So why is that? Perhaps it is because of the 'big skies', the open savannahs, the romance of films like Out of Africa and certainly because of the annual wildebeest migration, the density of game, the variety of bird life and the chance of a hot air balloon ride. Also because of the tall red-robed Maasai people whose lifestyle is completely at odds with western practices, and from whom one learns to question certain western values. A combination of all these things plus something to do with the spirit of the place - which is hard to put into words - is what attracts people to the Mara over and over.
DAY 10 M AASAI M ARA After Breakfast, or perhaps an optional sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride, we are off with our guides to explore what’s out there, up close and personal. The excitem ent is in the search, the adventure is awesom e, the thrill is in finding – perhaps a cheetah on a kill, or a gazelle giving birth, lion cubs frolicking, zebra grazing, or a topi standing atop a m ound like a centurion on guard. The ultim ate goal of course, will be to witness a crossing. We wait in hope of seeing crossing herds while finding lim itless chances for gam e spotting and spectacular photography Accom m odation: Mara Serena Lodge (2 nights) (B,L,D) DAY 11 M ARA SERENA to LITTLE M ARA BUSH CAM P After breakfast we gam e drive our way over to the Little M ara Bush Cam p. This will be your truly “Out of Africa,” eco-friendly experience, and you will lap up and love the luxury and service, quite apart from the fact that you will be right in the m idst of one of the best gam e view ing areas in Kenya. The Little Mara Bush Camp boasts one of the best and most spectacular locations in the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. On the banks of the seasonal Olare Orok River, it overlooks a large hippo pool with a population of over 40 hippos at any given time. With only 12 luxury tents on wooden platforms, Little Mara Bush Camp offers the desired exclusivity for guests who are looking for maximum privacy. Join us in the Bar/Lounge where an array of classic cocktails and sundowners await you. You will find a charging station for your camera batteries and laptops in the Photo Lounge. All Guest Tents are designed with great attention to detail. Mahogany furniture and luxurious soft furnishings give it the desired comfort of a luxury Camp with a "bush feeling". The game reserve is best known for its annual wildebeest migration between July and October. The migration features 1.2 million animals which wander from the corridors of the Serengeti to the Mara Eco-system, offering dramatic river crossings only a few minutes drive away.
DAYS 12-14 LITTLE M ARA BUSH CAM P Okay. Enough fooling around. This is where the rubber m eets the road... or should I say the wildebeest hit the water. We are here to see crossings, baby! And while we’re waiting, we’ll see the greatest w ildlife show on earth, as thousands upon thousands of zebra, antelope, and hundreds of thousands of wildebeest spread out before us. And where there is gam e, there are cats. The big ones. Lions, cheetahs, leopards... all following the scent of prey. Mixed in am ong them are the hyenas and the vultures (m uch m aligned, yet beautiful creatures), black-backed and striped jackals. All out for their m orning or afternoon snack. And don’t forget the birds, such as vultures and large birds of prey, such as the Bataleur and Marshall Eagles. Along the way, we will also catch sight of some of the sm aller creatures, such as Thom pson Gazelles (Tom m ies), and bat-eared foxes, m ongoose, and so m any m ore. Big birds (Crested and Waddle Neck Cranes, Cory Bustard, Secretary Bird), and little birds (Lilac Breasted Roller, Little Bee Eaters, Kingfishers). You w ill be blown away by the scenery, let alone the variety and num bers of wildlife. Accom m odation: Little Mara Bush Cam p (4 nights) (B,L,D) Day 15 - SAT, SEPT 14 M ARA to NAIRO BI Today we say goodbye to the Mara and, savoring our cherished m emories, take our charter flight back to Nairobi, where we will have a taste of the old colonial era of Kenya, with a lunch at the M uthaiga Country Club. A m eal at this prestigious location is listed as one of the top 10 things to do in Nairobi by Tim e m agazine. W e are fortunate that Vivien is a m em ber, and she will host us as guests for lunch. Here bid adieu to our new friends and fellow travelers before being transferred to the Nairobi Airport in tim e for our flight hom e. There are three segm ents to the 2019 Drifter Sister Africa Safari. They can be done alone or in com bination. Following are the tw o pre-Kenya segm ents in Southern Africa: 1. Victoria Falls/Botswana (August 21-31); and 2. Photography W orkshop in South Africa, including four days in Cape Tow n (August 11-21). This itinerary is subject to change as circum stances dictate.
VICTORIA FALLS/BOTSWANA PRE-TRIP EXTENSION - AUG 21-31 DAY -1 - TUES AUG 20 Board your flight and begin your journey to Johannesburg DAY 1 - W ED AUG 21 - JOH ANNESBURG Today we arrive in Johannesburg (either from the States or Cape Town (if doing Photography Workshop)), are m et by our host representative and transferred to our hotel. We will m eet this evening for a W elcom e Dinner. Accom m odation: The African Rock Hotel (1 night) DAY 2 VICTORIA FALLS, ZIM BABW E Today after breakfast we are transferred to OR Tam bo International Airport for our flight to Victoria Falls, where we are met and transferred to Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, and checked in to our standard room s for two nights. On the way to the lodge we stop for lunch at Lookout Point on the rim of the canyon below the falls, where you will have an opportunity to ‘fly’ over the canyon on the Gorge Swing. After our exciting adventure, we return to the lodge to relax in the lounge overlooking the water hole. And after an enchanting Sunset Cruise, we will have dinner at the Lodge. Set high on a natural plateau, the westward facing Victoria Falls Safari Lodge borders the Zambezi National Park and is just four kilometers from the thundering Victoria Falls. Enjoying uninterrupted views of spectacular Africa sunsets and year round game at its on-site water hole, accommodation at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is ideally positioned to offer the most discerning traveler a taste of Africa at its best. DAY 3 VICTO RIA FALLS After breakfast at the Lodge this m orning we will enjoy a W alking Tour of the largest falls in the world. Then, for a different perspective, we’ll take a Helicopter Ride for a bird’s eye view of the m ighty falls. After lunch at M am a Africa Eating House we’ll visit the little town, or a Craft Market, or perhaps we will enjoy a walkaround on the grounds of the old-world colonial Victoria Falls Hotel. Dinner tonight will be at Makuwa Kuwa Restaurant in our Lodge. The Victoria Falls Hotel, popularly known as “the grand old lady of the Falls”, is situated in the Victoria Falls National Park, a world heritage. The Edwardian-style five-star hotel, built in 1904, was recently redecorated and refurbished and now combines the charm of the old with the convenience of the new. Set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, it provides the tranquility and seclusion that many guests seek. The Terrace has been a rendezvous for adventurers in Africa for over a century. The ambience of the hotel is steeped in that history. Accom m odation: Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (2 nights) (B,L,D) OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA W e will be spending the next six unforgettable days and nights in the Okavango Delta, tucked away in lavish tented cam ps on rem ote Nxaragha Island. In Cam p O kavango, expect GAM E DRIVES from this water-based camp in m okoros (canoes) and on foot on the larger islands accom panied by resident naturalists. Cam p M orem i, shaded by ebony trees, is located in the Morem i W ildlife Reserve. GAM E DRIVES in Cam p Morem i will set out on land via Land Rovers in search of elephants, giraffe, cheetah, leopard, lion and buffalo. The Okavango Delta is a unique oasis at the northern edge of the Kalahari Desert. Camp Okavango borders the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, hence includes a diverse habitat that supports a wide variety of animals. Guests may see wild dog, cheetah and leopard. Resident species include lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, kudu, red lechwe, sable and roan antelope. Guided bush walks to the Delta's islands offer an opportunity to track the larger species that inhabit this wilderness area. Other activities include game drives, mokoro excursions, canoeing and fishing. Papyrus and Phoenix palms flourish here and the waters provide an ecosystem for fish eagles and kingfishers, hippopotamus, crocodiles and tiger-fish. The Okavango Delta is a birder’s paradise and bird-watching is fantastic all year round.
DAYS 4-5-6 CAM P OKAVANGO After breakfast and m orning activity (if tim e allow s), w e transfer to Kasane Airport and fly by light aircraft to Cam p Okavango, where we check in for three nights, sleeping in perm anent African-style safari tents, with en suite bathroom s. While at this lodge all cam p activities, m eals, refreshm ents, laundry, local spirits and wines are on a fully-inclusive basis. Plus em ergency m edical evacuation insurance and national park fees, governm ent levies, and taxes are included. Afternoon gam e drive (if time allows). Enchanting Camp Okavango sits at the heart of the Okavango Delta on the private and remote Nxaragha Island. For guests seeking a true water experience in the heart of the Delta, Camp Okavango is the place to be. It is a bird-watcher’s paradise and promises a year round water experience. All game viewing activities are conducted by experienced guides and include exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro (canoe) and motorboat, and tracking the larger game species on guided nature walks on the many surrounding islands. Evening sundowners in surprise locations are a special treat. This camp is very exclusive, as it accommodates only 24 guests. In November 2015 the current camp was torn down and completely rebuilt, reopening in April 2016. For the Drifter Sister 2016 Safari, we were treated to being some of the first guests to experience the brand ‘new’ camp, which was just as charming and intimate as the original. Accom m odation: Cam p O kavango (3 nights) DAYS 7-8-9 CAM P M OREM I After breakfast and m orning activity at Cam p Okavango (if tim e allows), we reluctantly say a fond farewell to our guides and other special camp em ployees we have befriended, and again transfer by light aircraft to Cam p M orem i, where we check in for our last three nights in the Delta. W e will again sleep in perm anent African-style safari tents with en suite facilities. Just as at Cam p Okavango, while at this lodge all cam p activities, m eals, refreshm ents, local spirits and wines are on a fully-inclusive basis. Plus em ergency m edical evacuation insurance and national park fees, governm ent levies, and taxes are included. This afternoon, if tim e allows we will venture out in safari vehicles for our first Cam p Xakanaxa gam e drive. Situated in the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve, Camp Moremi enjoys breath-taking vistas over the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Nestled within a natural riverine forest of teak and ebony trees, twelve tented safari suites have an East-African flavour and a classic touch. Hidden in lush green trees and branches, it feels like you are walking in an African fairytale forest. Enjoy outside dinners under an amazing starry sky, let a professional staff pamper you with their humour and warmth, dive in the large pool, start your day with homemade pancakes and enjoy excellent elephant, lion and leopard sightings (among many other species). With no Wi-Fi connection, you are truly away from your fast pace life. Move with the rhythm of elephants, smell the sweet, warm breeze and explore African land and waters - you will leave Camp Moremi with an everlasting experience (and new friends). Feel at home. Great birding, excellent guides, outstanding wildlife viewing, delicious dinners in the bush, warm, African hospitality – all this makes for an intense safari under the dense green trees of Camp Moremi.
Accom m odation: Cam p M orem i (3 nights) All photos of Kenya and Botswana in this brochure (exclusive of smost of the lodgings) were taken by Drifter Sister on previous safaris (2005, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016). You too will have the opportunity to take photos like these (probably better). I have attempted to portray here the wonderful accommodations, diversity of wildlife & habitat, and activities we will enjoy at these camps. DAY 10 CAMP M OREM I to JOH ANNESBURG After breakfast and one last m orning activity (tim e perm itting), we depart Camp Morem i and venture south by light aircraft to M aun Airport for our flight from Maun to OR Tam bo International Airport, Johannesburg, and are m et by our host representative to be transferred to our hotel. Dinner will be at the hotel. Accom m odation: The African Rock Hotel (B,L,D) DAY 11 - FRI AUG 12 JOHANNESBURG to NAIRO BI (B) This m orning we are transferred to OR Tam bo International Airport for our international flight back to the States (those doing only the extension), or our dom estic flight to Nairobi where we begin our Safari in Kenya during the m igration. The individual farms were consequently joined to form a wilderness area that is today privately owned by 48 individual members. Timbavati Game Reserve is situated on the Western boundary of the Kruger National Park and lies between the Klaserie, Umbabat, Manyeleti and Sabie Sands Reserves. In recent years, the fences separating Timbavati from the Kruger National Park were removed to form a pristine wilderness area of approximately four million hectares.
