Innovations that set trends (I) • Smart Operator In the Schwabmünchen district of Wertachau, the first intelligent electricity grid in Bavarian Schwaben was in operation from July 2014 to December 2016. The intelligent network can balance out the fluctuations in generation from sun or wind, and the consumption itself, via various components. The brain of the intelligent network is the Smart Operator – a computer which automatically controls the balance between decentralised generation and consumption. During the project phase, significantly more of the electricity generated on site could be used, and therefore the regional distribution network could be relieved. The project results was presented in summer 2017. • ePlan B At a P & R hub in Buchloe, an e-mobility charging structure and 15 electric cars were available for commuters, from March 2015 to March 2017. During the field test, an intelligent charging management was developed for the electric cars. Thanks to this intelligent charging management, 40% more locally generated regenerative electricity could be used for the electric cars, and in addition, power peaks in the distribution network could be avoided. The project results was presented in summer 2017 Lechwerke AG · 18.01.2018 19
Innovations that set trends (II) • Energy change Unterallgäu North West In the model region Unterallgäu North West, the percentage of renewable energies in electricity and heat consumption should increase to 60%, due to a comprehensive package of measures. The partners of the project started in 2016 are the district of Unterallgäu, the Allgäu energy and environment centre (EZA) and the Lechwerke. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture. In the scope of the project, LEW investigates the potential of a virtual regional plant, for the better system integration of decentrally generated energy, supports communities with the conversion of street lighting to LED technology, and tests the use of green energy for the heating area. • Eco project hydropower: INADAR and ISOBEL The EU is currently funding two ground-breaking eco projects of Lechwerke, via the conservation programme Life: INADAR (Innovative approach for dam restoration) and ISOBEL (Integrated Solutions for Bed Load Management) The focus of the project INADAR is the integration of so called “Eco-berms”. The dams will be renovated, the flood defences improved, and at the same time, due to the near-natural design of the bank areas, new habitats will be created for animals and plants. In the course of the project, 500 metre long pilot lines will be built in the river, in the reservoir area of the Danube power stations Oberelchingen and Offingen. In the project ISOBEL, suitable water structures will be built at various points in the Iller, for fish and small creatures. To this end, the project partners will introduce gravel into the Iller, using a variety of procedures, which will reactivate the natural debris in the river. Lechwerke AG · 18.01.2018 20
