Commissioner’s Message I am delighted to introduce the Public Service Commission’s Corporate Learning and Development Calendar for 2019-20. We hope this will be a key resource for you as you plan your performance goals and discuss your professional and career development for the upcoming year. This year, we continue to emphasize and celebrate innovation. Organizations that can see innovative opportunities during times of change will flourish. Have you ever wondered how innovation can thrive in the public service? Our Public Sector Innovation course for employees will introduce you to the topic and give you tools to increase your capacity to create new and effective solutions. Would you like to learn how to take a human-centered and creative approach to problem solving? Our Design Thinking and Tools for Innovation course is right for you! These courses can be used towards a Certificate in Innovation, which is just one of the many certificate programs that may be of interest to you. Other certificates include Diversity and Inclusion Development, Communication, Personal Leadership, Occupational Health and Safety and most recently, our partnership with Saint Mary’s University to offer their acclaimed Masters Certificate in Project Management. Along with our certificate programs, we have many courses for individual contributors that promote self- awareness, such as Emotional Intelligence and professional abilities like Change Management. Providing managers with development opportunities to hone their management skills is also a priority. The Manager Fundamentals Certificate, as well as Manager Online, are both geared to take a minimum amount of time while giving you maximum benefit and preparation for your leadership role. Courses like Team Performance Concepts, Leading Virtual Teams and Effective Delegation and Feedback will help support managers to build their leadership capabilities in core areas. Our Leadership Development Programs (LDP) are an excellent way to understand your personal leadership strengths and build your capacity to lead innovative teams and manage in complex systems. These programs continue to be recognized for advanced standing at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Community College. LDP graduates can use their certificate towards course credit for programs at these institutions. The LDP nomination process starts in the spring, so be sure to have a conversation with your manager to express your interest and decide which of these programs might be right for you. At the Public Service Commission, we strive to ensure there’s something for everyone in our corporate learning calendar. We are proud to contribute to government’s goals and priorities and we’re dedicated to offering the highest quality learning experiences to support and enhance your ability to serve Nova Scotians. Please delve into the calendar and have a discussion with your manager about how you can engage, learn and grow! Thank you, Laura Lee Langley Commissioner, Public Service Commission
