Back to my journey…

  • Ireland’s wind industry was
    booming in 2008

  • PM practices in wind
    development matured rapidly

  • Driven by European & national
    policy targets and REFIT
    subsidies

  • PM drove delivery and investor
    confidence

  • Including investors like Bord Gáis
    Energy

Gas Networks Ireland Overview

                         • Gas Networks Ireland owns,
                             operates, develops and maintains the
                             natural gas network in Ireland.

                         • Delivering more than one third of
                             Ireland’s energy through the gas
                             pipeline network.

                         • Making sure that over 670,000
natural gas customers receive a safe,

                             gas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

                         • Almost half of Ireland’s electricity is
generated from gas via the Gas
                             Networks Ireland pipeline system.

Bord Gáis Networks to Gas Networks Ireland

 • Huge Undertaking
   – Statutory Instruments, Government Consents, Financial &
Legal Restructures, Contract Novations, IT Systems

 • 2/3 people did not understand the role of Bord Gáis Networks
 • Bord Gáis Networks never invested heavily in its ‘brand’, acting
instead as the silent server, focused on safety, reliable gas
supplies and growing utilisation of the gas networks.
 • Our task was to change our name, maintain awareness of our
safety messages, avoid confusion and manage costs in a
   challenging environment.

Why?

       Constrained Funding Model
       • Year on year and dependent on exchequer resources

       Fragmented Service Delivery
       • Diseconomies of scale

       Variable Operations & Maintenance
       • Limited funding and lack of standards

       Aging and poor quality infrastructure
       • Water mains average age twice the EU Average
