PLEBE GRADUATION Forty-three young men officially joined the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets during the Introductory Gradua- tion Parade on September 12, 2020. The then-plebes took the MMA Cadet Oath before joining the MMA battalion as cadets. They later marched alongside their company brothers in the pass in review. Normally the event ends with hugs from friends and family, but this year’s graduation ceremony was different because of COVID-19 procedures. The parents were able to attend and wave their posters with their son’s names on them to show their support but, it was understood that there would be no contact between the cadets and their families. After the parade, MMA President Col Dowling, MMA Com- mandant of Cadets SgtMaj Bass, MMAPO President Missy Rod & MMA Dean Miriam Hidalgo discussed with the par- ents in attendance the plans for the rest of the Fall Semester at MMA. They answered any questions parents had as well. Although this was a different version of our traditional Intro- ductory Graduation Parade, it was still a great one! 6

REGISTRATION FALLL 2020 August 2020 Registration Nearly 150 students checked in for the Fall Semester on August 22-24. Registration day is always busy for both new and returning students. This year was no different. During registration we had to follow COVID-19 proto- cols. The incoming cadets registered at the entrance, then they were directed to King Gym to be dropped off. Immediately they had temperature checks and the DI’s met the parents to explain the rest of the process and help unload. The boys were then escorted inside King High & Tight All new students, or “plebes,” at Marine Military Academy receive a “high and tight” introductory buzz cut. After the first haircut, cadets can wear their hair closely cropped. Below are some transformation photos from Fall-term registration. Gym where they were tested for COVID. The parents were asked to follow directions to the drive thru set ups for academics and medical reception. Once their son was tested and we had a negative result parents were immediately notified and allowed to leave campus. Then the fun began for the cadets and plebes who were directed to the barbershop and the tailor. Then they collected their gear and were sent to their rooms to settle in and get ready for an early morning start! 8

We sincerely appreciate your participation in our “Emergency Relief Scholarship Fund.” Others had transferred to MMA after having experi- enced significant challenges in their earlier years and had finally found a place to gain the strength and con- fidence they needed to reach their full potential. Still others had dreamed of following in a family member’s footsteps, learning leadership skills the Marine Corps way, or learning to fly a plane, or graduating from MMA with a band of brothers for encouragement and sup- port through life. There are many reasons these young men wanted to return to MMA; but what was abun- dantly clear was that in order to reach this goal, they were going to need help. This is when all of you joined together to support these cadets. Leticia Oppermann 10
