OUR SERVICE PROGRAM PERSONNEL To achieve the Michigan Achievement Award and Star Award, all K of C councils are required to be involved in four particular activities. These become our strengths, and are what guide councils to a successful fraternal year. Without these, K of C councils would just be a loose, unorganized group, doing whatever it was they could think of, without having any common goals. These activities are Faith, Family, Community, Life. In each of these activities there are numerous programs, of which each council must complete four programs in every activity To be successful, individual K of C members are asked to be Directors of each activity, taking responsibility for the ful llment and completion of all of the respective programs in each activity. This “sharing of a goal” takes a load off of the Grand Knight (he is still ultimately responsible) and gives Directors a feeling of ownership and pride of completion when the goals are met. The following brother Knights are the Directors of the respective listed activity. You will note that there are more than six Directors. The reason for this is that a council is not relegated to only four activities. So, if you have an idea in any area, please mention it to the respective Director or the Grand Knight If it is something that is out of the realm of our K of C council, it can be brought up at the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), by either Tom Plegue (PPC Chair), Jeff Dombrowski (Stewardship/ Fundraising Chair) or Gregg Zuccker (Worship Chair). GRAND KNIGHT John Kukla 734-558-4147 My Brother Knights I hope this letter nds you all safe and healthy Here we are entering into another beautiful Spring. The season brings new life and hope. I share the optimism of many that we will see the Pandemic get under control, and we will be having more opportunities to congregate and interact with each other It has been a quiet Winter for our council, as with most councils. We supported the church when required, and our Worthy Program Director will have more details in his article regarding all the support and assistance we provided In spite of the Pandemic and all the changes we had to make to our council operations this past year, I am proud to say that our council is lined up to earn a Star Award! We sat down last week and looked at our progress towards Start Council and we have the necessary criteria, including new members. Thanks to everyone pulling together to achieve this goal. It was a team effort, and I am proud to be a part of that team Remember, Supreme is encouraging new members to join the K of C by waiving the 1st year’s dues. Joining has never been easier, with the on-demand online exempli cation process. In-deed, a new member can become a 3rd degree Knight in less than an hour, all from the comfort and safety of their home. So, if you know anyone who is curious about the Knights, or has ex-pressed an interest in joining, now is the time. The offer runs out in July Have the prospective candidate go to the K of C Web page at www.kofc.org/joi and enter the code MCGIVNEY2020 in the promo box Remind them that our council # is 13475 for the council they are joining. I would encourage them to take the online exempli cation, and they can participate in an in-person exempli cation later when we are once again conducting in-person activities This is a great incentive and everyone likes something for free In closing, I wish for all of you and you families a safe and blessed Spring and Summer Vivat Jesus! 5 . fi n , fi . . . . . : . . fi fi .
Brother Knights George The month of May is a very welcome month. We are starting to see a reduction in in Covid 19 cases and we are starting to see Hone an end to mask wearing, the weather is nally warming up, K District of C Councils are starting to see better attendance at their live meetings, our district 110 is seeing a growth in membership Deputy and two of our councils are going to be Star Councils - Wyandotte 1802, and Sacred Heart Grosse Ile 13475, our scal year comes to an end on June 30, and most importantly it is the month of our Blessed Mother Mary. So, there is much to be grateful for. Remember to thank God for all he has given us and remember he is always there…we might just have to look a little harder sometimes past everything else that is going on in our lives to see and hear him. Even though May is the month of our Blessed Mother it doesn't and shouldn't be the only month we remember her and pray the Rosary. All of my District 110 Councils have a Rosary prior to their meeting each month and Sacred Heart holds one every Tuesday all year long at the church beginning at 6:30 p.m The Annual State Conference had to be cancelled for a second year in a row due to the uncertainty of what regulations Governor Whitmer was going place on us at the time of the conference. However, there will be a virtual conference which will be held on Friday evening May 28 and Saturday May 29, 2021, so make sure your delegates are signed in for the voting that will take place. The conference is open to everyone with these links, you tube https://youtu.be/w7uzUfmz5xc OR. Facebook. https://fb.me/e/1xX2YJxAl OR zoom https:// us02web.zoom.us/j/86352999023. The meeting on Friday will begin with Mass and on Saturday with a Rosary. Delegates will receive a detailed letter or email information for the conference. All K of C members are encouraged to tune in to see what is happening with our State of Michigan K of C. My four-year turned ve-year term of of ce ends on June 30, 2021. We are looking for a Past Grand Knight or Navigator hopefully to ll this very rewarding position. Please contact me if you are willing to step up and become a District Deputy Our Downriver Council events will be taking place again this summer with our Annual Boat Ride being held on Wednesday July 14, 2021. The cost is $25 a person or $40 a couple. We will be having a larger boat this year and will be able to space out better. This event helps fund our Annual K of C Picnic which will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Centennial Park on Grosse Ile. Please contact your Grand Knight for tickets and further information. Now that your council is becoming more active again it would be a great time to come to a meeting and see how you can be of help with several of the charity activities that have been on hold for the past 14 or so months. Your council needs you so don't let the burden fall on just a few of the members. Just a small amount of your time on some activity would be very helpful to your council or church or community or some needy charity. If you could only help with one thing it would take the stress off your other Brother Knights and especially your council of cers. Who knows you might even make a new friend that might enrich your life or your families. And as always share the Knights of Columbus fraternity with your Catholic friends and ask one of them to be a part of the largest Catholic Mens Organization in the world. Don't keep being a Knight a secret. With the new policies in place and FREE Membership until June 30, 2021, it is easier than ever to become a Knight. Go to kofc.org and or mikofc.org for more information. In these very troubled times we need you, God needs you God Bless each of you and your Families George Hone District Deputy District 110 6 fi . r r , fi . fi fi fi fi , .
My Brother Knights We’re starting to see the lifting of some Covid-19 restrictions, particularly if one has received the vaccine. Some people feel that the restrictions were needed, others feel it was overdone. Regardless, there was de nitely an inclination at restricting church attendance than there was restricting bars, casinos and abortion clinics. It got so bad that some church out west rented a hall in a casino where they could have Sunday service because they weren’t allowed to have it in their own church! In Canada the police entered a church in the middle of the service and shut the service down and arrested the pastor. Meanwhile across the street from some of the churches were restaurants and bars doing business as usual. On-line you can read one story after another of this sort. For many people, religious faith and worship just does not mean much anymore. And for those that it does, many just won’t speak up. So what’s to be done? Prayer. Let God handle it as he did in the Old Chancellor Testament Faith and prayer was the form of action that brought about results. Of course if PGK/FDD you open your Bible and turn to Numbers you’ll nd about ten different times that Jeff Dombrowski the Israelites called out to God for help, then turned their backs on Him. Chastisement followed the rebellion…and maybe that’s where we are in this country. Chastisement Just over one hundred years ago Our Blessed Mother told the three child seers to pray the Rosary every day. She also told them that “people must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord anymore, for he is already too much offended!” Right after that the “Miracle of the Sun” occurred, just as the Blessed Mother promised You may like to read about some of the Saints, how prayer affected their lives. It can change anything. We are still doing the Rosary every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm, and we’d love to have you join us. Since May is the month of our Blessed Mother Mary, this would be a wonderful time for you to develop a stronger prayer life. Join us, either in the Gathering Space, or outside in the Rosary Walk, right next to the church doors Vivat Jesus! 7 . , . . fi fi .

Our Council Coping with Covid-19 There was still need to meet, to make plans for post-covid, to maintain our office, store room, clean the kitchen, complete required reports to the state and supreme. ZOOM changed the way to do many things, from mass, to class and social gatherings. Our council leadership met a couple of times a month, often with coffee and donuts (some needed inducement!). Council meetings used ZOOM, and from the initial meeting using my computer at home, we branched into multiple cameras, and monitors, as more of our membership joined in. Tentatively we will continue to use both live and ZOOM gatherings, though fraternity and unity should mean eventual live meetings for all, with a sparing use of ZOOM for those unable to attend. Ed Ochen November 24, 1923 - April 30, 2021 Edward A. Ochen was 97 years old when he passed away on Friday April 30, 2021. Brother Ed became a Knight on May 1, 1952 and was a 4th degree Knight with 69 years of honorable service. Sir Knight Ed was also a member of the Color Corps. Brother Ed was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 24, 1923 and courageously served his country in the United States Army Air Corps. Ed piloted a Martin B-26 Marauder bomber named "Sky Queen" over the deadly Nazi-occupied skies over Europe during World War 2. Brother Ed and his 5-man crew were assigned to the 559th Squadron, 387th Bomb Group, 9th Air Force and provided tactical air support for ground troops and flew from a base located 40-50 miles north of London. By the wars end, Ed had flown 60 missions over enemy territory and been awarded 6 battle stars for flying tactical air support over enemy territory, including most of the major battles in Europe and was also awarded 13 Air Medals for combat flights. Brother Ed and his "Sky Queen” also played a role in clearing the way for General Patton's 3rd Army tanks...something that Ed was particularly proud of. It's no surprise to me that Ed's generation has the sobriquet "The Greatest Generation". Ed Ochen is a true American hero. After WWII, Ed graduated from the University of Detroit and returned to work at Ford Motor Co. He also married the true love of his life, Ann. Ed retired from Ford after 38 years. Ed served as an usher at Grosse Ile Sacred Heart, and three other area churches. Ed and Ann moved to Venice, Florida, joining Epiphany Cathedral in 2000 and truly lived his faith...volunteering his services in many capacities including Eucharistic minister until the age of 94! In addition to being a Knight of Columbus, Brother Ed is also a true Knight, being awarded Knighthood in the Order of the Holy Sepulcher, a Catholic order of Knighthood under the protection of the Holy See. Ann and Ed shared 56 happy years together until Ann's passing in 2003. He is survived by his 3 daughters...Dolores, Judy and Chris. Ed also leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Editor’s Note: Ed Ochen’s daughter, Judy, is a member of our parish. Prior to covid, she would bring Ed to our council meetings to give him a chance to spend time with others. He was an interesting man with a background to go with it. Though he was not a member of our council, he had been a member of our parish. I thought noting his passing would be of interest to our members.

Weekly Rosary Since August we have been sponsoring a weekly Rosary on Tuesday, at 6:30pm. Anyone is welcomed to join in, Knights or not, family and friends all included. Join us in the Gathering Space, or outside at the Rosary Walk as we pray for our country, our church, and our own silent needs. Christmas Decorating Having our church looking it’s best for the celebration of Christmas is just the right thing to do…and this past year the Knights helped out again. Covid Events! Stations of the Cross Our cancelled Lenten Fish Fry dinners due to covid didn’t stop us from celebrating the most holiest season. In conjunction with St. Cyprian parish, we hosted the Stations of the Cross during Lent, and also assisted with the Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday. State Raffle Every year we support the State Ra e by buying ra e tickets. Only $5 per ticket, the funds go to supporting the state wide charitable e orts of the Knights of Columbus. Our council receives 20% back of the value of tickets that we sell. This year the state set a record with total sales of over $327,000.00 to go to charitable needs. If you purchased yours, take a bow…because you helped! ff ffl ffl
FRATERNAL BENEFITS EVENT! Gentlemen, Mr. Tom Jackson, our Field Agent, will be presenting a program about our fraternal bene ts, with a question & answer session available. This will be a ZOOM session hosted by our council on Thursday, May 20th at 7:00PM Insurance Please use the following link to join the meeting Field Agent https://zoom.us/j/94259726357? pwd=THZlbmNxWU4rS245VEEvRTZ1eHBuQT09 Tom Jackson Meeting ID: 942 5972 6357 Passcode: 591393 734-778-9601 thomas.F.Jackso n@kofc.org BOTTOMS UP DIAPER BANK… KEEP THE DIAPERS COMING! Donations (diapers or monetary) can be dropped off at the designated areas in the church gathering space or the parish offices. This appeal for donations is ongoing throughout the year. Why is there such a need? Many families do not have access to a washer and dryer, and if using a day care while working, they must have diapers to leave with their children. With diapers averaging $80 a month, many babies remain in one diaper all day, resulting in diaper rash and behavioral issues. This situation is a leading cause of child abuse. Sizes 3 to 5 are especially needed. Diaper Over the past few years Sacred Heart has donated well over 20,000 diapers to the Grosse Ile Inter-Faith Council’s Diaper Bank. Since the start of this year Sacred Heart has donated almost 4,500 diapers. In one case, a woman with 4 infants received 480 Bank diapers…and this is just one way in which we are helping others. Though we do not manage the ‘Bottoms Up Diaper Bank’ Our participation in this Richard ministry is part of Sacred Heart’s Knights of Columbus community outreach. …How this works! Brother Knights, With the number of events that the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus runs each year, we always need volunteers. In the past, we would circulate a signup sheet at the meetings to fill these spots. Even though we’ve had good participation with theses signups, it did not reach everyone in our council. With our large events like the Lenten Fish Dinners, we had approximately 100 signup slots each week. Without the help of technology it would have been impossible to track all the signup slots. Last year we introduced Signup Genius in order to reach not only our Knights but also others in Sacred Heart Parish that assisted us putting on events. We will continue to use this technology for all of our future events. If you have not used Signup Genius in the past it is quite simple. When you receive an invitation for a signup: 1. Click on the link – this will take you to the Signup Genius page 2. Click on the slot that you want to sign up for 3. At the bottom of the signup page, click on “Submit and Signup” 4. Another page will pop up asking you to create a “UserName”. Always use your email address for this. You will also need to create a “Password”. Use something that is simple and memorable. You will use this every time you have an invitation in the future to login to Signup Genius. 5. Follow instructions at the bottom of the page to submit your signup 6. If at any time you get a RED message box on your screen, you have left something out, just make the change requested, and submit. If you still have difficulty, contact GK Doug Cryderman at 734-676-0369 for assistance.
