Spring Large Item Waste Pickup The 2021 Spring Large Item Waste Pick Up is slated for the week of March 1, 2021. Items should be placed by the curb the week of February 22nd, so that Tiger Sanitation is able to estimate the number and type of vehicles/equipment needed to remove the items. Each resident is allowed to place a pile of 8 cubic yards or less out by the curb, being careful not to block sidewalks or meters. Postcards will be sent to each home in advance of the pickup as a reminder. Commercial tree trimmers are not allowed to place tree trimmings at the curb for the pickup, unless prior arrangements have been made by the property owner with Tiger Sanitation. There is a charge for piles over 8 cubic yards, so residents wishing to take advantage of that type of service are advised to contact Tiger Sanitation at (210) 333-4287 to make those arrangements, prior to this event. Residents may also call Tiger Sanitation at any time of year for special pickups. Please see their website for charges for their services. Leon Valley Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) Program The Leon Valley Fire Department is proud to announce our newest effort in community-based personalized health care! Our Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) program, to be implemented in January of 2021, represents one of the most progressive evolutions in the delivery of community health and wellness care. A Certified EMS Technician, through the use of a specialized vehicle, will use non-emergency resources to assist citizens at their homes, instead of a hospital setting, where appropriate. The intent of the program is to provide patient-centered healthcare to address all needs of an individual. The MIH Paramedic will provide assessment and preventative healthcare education that is tailored to a patient’s specific medical needs and will connect the individual with appropriate social services. This allows the Paramedic to address needs pro-actively, in an effort to reduce citizen dependence on emergency-based services. The Leon Valley Fire Department MIH program will normally operate Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, excluding city holidays, but will include some weekends. All appointments will be made subject to the availability of staff. The program is to be managed and staffed by Community Paramedic Mr. Chris Willis, with oversight by the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief. Some of the goals and responsibilities of the MIH program are: Helping residents that need more assistance after being recently discharged from a hospital with getting into the home, picking up or ordering medications or medical devices, and providing contact numbers for specialized care agencies. Assisting residents that may have fallen on several occasions with a safety/fall survey of the home. Acting on reported concerns from friends/family members for a person that may have been unwell recently, but have not called EMS or a doctor. Assist with the completion of a File of Life - a red, magnetic packet that contains important medical information about the person. The “File of Life” also provides an area to list contact information for doctors, family members, insurance information and any other special circumstances that rescue personnel should know. Fostering relationships with households of families of residents that have special needs or other medical conditions that require special considerations. Providing assistance to any citizen that need help in a non-emergency situation. Meet Your Community MIH Paramedic Mr. Chris Willis Mr. Willis was born in Kansas City, Missouri and moved to San Antonio in 1983. He has been married for 20 years and has two children. His daughter will be graduating from high school this year and his son is currently in the 8th grade. Mr. Willis completed his Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (B.A.A.S.) degree in Fire and EMS Administration in December of 2019 at Texas A & M University at San Antonio. He obtained his EMT-Basic certification in 1995 and continued his training to obtain the EMT-Paramedic certification in 2006. Previous to the City of Leon Valley, Mr. Willis worked for eight years as the Assistant Fire Chief for District 7 Fire Rescue. When asked why he came to work for Leon Valley, Mr. Willis states that he chose our city to be a part of helping change the way emergency medical services are delivered to citizens. He can be reached by email at MIH@leonvalleytexas.gov, by phone at (210) 684-3219, or by cell phone at (726) 600-5250. 9
