MissouriArkansas District Kiwanis Celebrates Forty Years in Hot Springs The Kiwanis Club of Hot Springs Village was chartered on March 19, 1981, with thirty-four members. Of that group, Henry Jensen was the rst President, Jim McKinnon was Vice-President, Timothy Redden was the Secretary and the rst Treasurer was Jack Keimester. While the archives of the Village's rst newspaper, LaVilla, are lost to time it certainly seems likely that there was a big splash announcing the founding of Kiwanis in the Village. The Kiwanis Clubs of Hot Springs, Greater Hot Springs and the Golden K Club of Hot Springs were all sponsors of the new club. The club has been the home of one District Governor (Marion DuBose), nine Lieutenant Governors, two regional Trustees and recognized by the Missouri-Arkansas District as a Distinguished Club thirteen times. One other notable honor for the club was that the Boys and Girls Club was for many years named the Paul Bewie Boys and Girls Club after the second president of the club. The Village Kiwanis Club grew quickly and within a period of only three years more than 120 members could be counted. That was such a large group that the decision was made to divide and form a second club. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Hot Springs Village was chartered on October 4, 1984. The two Kiwanis Clubs are sponsors of three school districts, Fountain Lake, Mountain Pine and Jessieville, where they provide scholarships for graduating seniors and SLP clubs at the elementary through high school levels that promote leadership skills. The Village Club continues to support the community with nancial support to such organizations as the Imagination Library, Terri c Kids, Special Kids Picnic, Meals-on-wheels, Cedar Mountain Boys and Girls Club, Jackson House, Salvation Army Bell Ringers, Camp P efer and Village Pride Day, and continues to be the largest club in Division 15. Hot Springs Village Club’s Fortieth Anniversary this year was a bit muted because of the precautions they were taking to cope with the Covid Pandemic. Nevertheless, on March 18, 2021, at their regular Thursday morning meeting, members “raised the cup” to celebrate, properly distanced and masked, forty years of service and fellowship. The current of cers of the club are Charles Derryberry, President; Susan Lafond, Vice-president and current Regional Trustee; Rick Martinek, Treasurer; and Kathleen Kinney, Secretary and the current Lt. Gov. of Div.15. Hot Springs Village Kiwanis Club meets each Thursday at 8:00am in the Christ Lutheran Church, 103 Ponferrada Way. For more information, you can contact Club President Charlie Derryberry, 501-922-1915. Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/kiwanis.hsv.7. We are still practicing social distancing and please wear a mask.
