Roading projects update Omokoroa Road Urbanisation Work continues to progress well with our contractor J Swap. Since our update in January, the focus continues on the enabling works along the berm on the eastern and western sides, in preparation for roadway and pavement construction to start this September. What to expect over the coming months: Works will continue on undergrounding services in April 2021, along with further construction on stormwater connections, footpath and cycleway, kerbing and channelling. There will continue to be some traffic management for one-lane closures of Omokoroa Road so that enabling works can be carried out safely.
Once these works are complete, construction of the roadway and pavement will take place from September 2021 to June 2022 from the Western Avenue end of the roadway to Tralee Street. Some roundabout construction may be done in parallel with the roadway and pavement construction. We thank the public for their support and co-operation over the course of the works. Omokoroa Road pedestrian/cycleway bridges Work has begun on two standalone pedestrian bridges adjacent to the existing Omokoroa Road bridge over the railway line: The eastern side bridge will be a three-metre-wide shared pedestrian and cycle path. It will also accommodate light vehicle movement if required during an emergency. The western side bridge will be a 1.8-metre-wide pedestrian and cycle path only, safely linking the path in Kayelene Place with a new path being constructed on Omokoroa Road toward Settlers Hall. HEB Construction has been awarded the Council contract for $1.2 million. Initial physical works started in February and the bridges are expected to be completed by June 2021. Once completed, pedestrians and cyclists will have safe access across this railway bridge – something that has been lacking. What to expect over the coming months: The HEB construction team will be installing piling for the bridges over the course of March 2021. Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the project and will vary in complexity. HEB is in contact with neighbouring properties in the event there are any expected disruptions to traffic flow or access over the duration of the project. The images below show excavation works on the eastern side for the new pedestrian and cycle path.
Keep up with the progress here Omokoroa Road Urbanisation Stage 2 Stage 2 of urbanising Omokoroa Road will involve upgrading 1.7km of Omokoroa Road from Prole Road to the railway line to an urbanised standard – complete with kerbing, shared cycle and pedestrian path, lighting, improved road markings and signage, utility services, stormwater improvements and new water main. There will be a new roundabout at Flounder Drive and a road connection to Prole Road and the future school(s). What to expect over the coming months: A contractor for construction is expected to be confirmed in March 2021. Physical works will then be expected to start in April 2021 and be completed in 2022.
Community projects update Reminder: Expressions of Interest for old Sports Pavilion and Library Building close on Friday 12 March 2021 Don’t forget we’re seeking interest from the Omokoroa community for groups that may wish to use the old pavilion when it is relocated on the Western Avenue Reserve. Read more here about this here. We’re also keen for the former library and service centre on the corner of Kowai Grove and McDonnell Street to continue to be used for the benefit of the community and are seeking expressions of interest on the proposal to lease the building to community groups. Read more about this here. What happens once Expressions of Interest close? All submissions will be evaluated by the Omokoroa Community Board on the basis of the submission received and by a verbal interview, if necessary. The Community Board will then make a recommendation to Council. Interviews are likely to take place in the latter half of March 2021, with a final decision by the Performance and Monitoring Committee of Council on 27 April 2021.
Western Avenue shared path Work has kicked off on the shared path at Western Avenue in Omokoroa. In the meantime, we’re advising the public to please allow for extra time to get to the sports fields, skate path and playground at Western Avenue. Note, the sports fields will remain accessible from the library level of the Pavilion. Construction on-site will be weather dependent and completed in stages. We expect to have the shared path ready for public access from mid-March 2021. View the temporary public access route during construction here Recreation projects update
Omokoroa Domain upgrade and new playground This is a $1.04 million development to revamp the Omokoroa Domain with an exciting new destination playground to replace the existing outdated playground. The new playground will include swings, trampolines, tunnels, climbing structures and a hamster wheel, creating a new recreation experience for all visitors to Omokoroa Domain. It will rejuvenate the main entrance into the Domain, as well as create a new fit-for-purpose destination play space, which will better serve the needs of the growing community. To date, the project team has been busy evaluating and selecting play equipment that best satisfies the approved concept plan. Note, some of the playground equipment selected may take three to four months to arrive. What to expect over the coming months: Selection of a contractor, by the end of April 2021, to construct the new playground Disposal of the old playground and site preparation (after Easter) Anticipated arrival of play equipment in May (subject to global supply chain timeframes) Playground construction and landscaping is expected to take three to four months to complete. This will take place mostly over winter 2021. Below are examples of some of the playground equipment selected. Top image: Mouse wheel. Bottom left: Lullaby swing replacement (double cyclops snake swing). Bottom right: Selected model of the climbing tower.

About the Omokoroa Peninsula Projects By 2060, the Omokoroa peninsula will be fully developed and home to an estimated 12,000 residents. To cater for this significant growth and the need for continuing improvements to the peninsula’s infrastructure, we’re undertaking a series of projects – roading, reserves, cycleways, stormwater, building and planning – between now and 2022. The roll-out of the projects across Omokoroa follow sound planning work and reflect the spatial planning needed to support all land use development in Omokoroa in the years to come.
