Students, teachers, staff, and parents have worked hard to create a litter-free and eco-friendly campus. RECYCLING KOB strives to motivate our citizens to make informed decisions to take everyday actions to reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle the proper way, through their participation we were able to recycle the following: MAR 2019| ISSU 1 Household Hazardous Waste Facility Electronics - 11,300 Oil - 241 gallons Antifreeze - 45 gallons Paint - 138 gallons Batteries - 240 lbs. Pesticides/Herbicides/Fertilizer - 60 lbs. Oil filters - 10 lbs. Mulch - 1,500 cu yd ** In three months, 1,446 citizens utilized the HHW facility** Recycle Center Cardboard - 111 tons Plastics #1 Pete & #2 HDPE - 7 tons Paper - 4 tons Newspaper- 3.2 tons Recycling Drop-off locations Parks Bell Ranch - serviced 25 times Fire Station Eastridge - serviced 13 times UTPB Soccer Field - serviced 25 times South Grant - serviced 13 times Recycle Center - serviced 25 times "Show me How Odessa" Reduce/Reuse Challenge - In our efforts to create awareness of the importance of reducing waste, we provided our citizens a fun and creative way to reuse items that otherwise would end up in our landfills. We have partnered with local non-profits to donate gently used items from bulk items dropped off. Gift cards made possible with generous support from La Casa Verde Nursery, Inc. Community Projects Recycling/Repurposing 3 raised beds 7 tires 18 3-litter bottles 6 milk cartons 3 1-gallon jugs
LITTER PREVENTION Adopt -A- Spot Program - Our volunteers dedicated their time to maintain areas of our city litter-free. MAR 2019| ISSU 1 135 volunteers 131 hours 172 bags of litter collected Upcycled Demonstration Garden - Volunteers worked on our garden by removing weeds and litter. Great job in keeping the community garden litter-free! 5 volunteers 40 hours 25 bags of litter collected Campus Cleanup Rivalry 6 schools participated 72 volunteers 2,160 hours 168 bags of litter collected DMWT Spring Sweep - city-wide cleanup, volunteers maintained their neighborhoods litter-free while practicing social distancing. 300 volunteers 600 hours 900 bags of litter Citizen Bulk Item Drop-Off Center/Alley Bulk Item Pickup - Citizens used the drop-off center and the scheduled alley bulk item pickup, to properly dispose of 66.34 tons of bulk items, reducing illegal dumping activity in our community. Volunteer/Community Service - Jan - Mar 3,072 volunteer/community service hours were provided to keep our city clean and beautiful, saving our taxpayers $83,558.40
BEAUTIFICATION Sustainability Project - Volunteers worked on the garden by watering, painting, and MAR 2019| ISSU 1 planting. Our volunteers continue to do beautiful things in our community! 7 tires 18 3-litter bottles 6 milk cartons 3 1-gallon jugs We-Care We Help Basin Lawn Service for the elderly, disabled, veterans, widow/er 3 volunteers 15 hours 2 properties serviced 8 bags of grass clippings collected Neighborhood Shademakers - "Plant a Tree for Hope" 330 trees planted 600 volunteers 2021 Plant a Tree for Hope made 3 tree care educational workshops possible with tree grant from Upcycled Demonstration Garden 10 volunteers 3 volunteers 15 hours SUSTAINABILITY First School Garden - KOB and TL Booth Headstart partnered to create a garden in the school to teach children the importance of creating a sustainable community. Children will learn how to grow their own vegetables and herbs. 75 volunteers 300 hours 10 vegetables 2021 Sustainability Project is made 10 herbs possible with a grant from 8 native plants 1 rain barrel 1 water hose 3 soaker hoses 3 rain gutters 25 bags of soil 1 Yaupon Holly tree
EDUCATION KOB provided educational campaigns on social media, reaching over 49,429 citizens: January Recycling live trees campaign 4,154 reached using billboard 119 reached using social media Reduce campaign 1,605 reached using social media Take Care of Texas 251 reached using social media Adopt a Classroom 2,560 reached using social media Adopt a Nonprofit 619 reached using social media February Recycle Fashion Show 3,752 reached using billboard 5,596 reached using social media Master Gardeners tips 426 reached using social media DMWT campaign 253 reached using social media March DMWT Spring Cleanup 4,154 reached using billboard 8,700 reached using social media Campus Cleanup Rivalry 3,244 reached using social media We Care - We Help 3,711 reached using social media Reduce campaign 103 reached using social media Odessa Pride - Star of the Month 10,182 reached using social media Sponsor appreciation 1,954 reached using social media Waste in Place Training – KOB hosted a six-hour virtual train-the-trainer session, based on the Keep America Beautiful Curriculum Waste in Place(WIP). Citizens in New Mexico received the hours needed to educate their citizens and expand environmental programs.
HIGHLIGHTS KOB continues to receive overwhelming in-kind donations, thank you for your continued support! Preparing to build our first sustainability project in a local school. KOB received the Keep Texas Beautiful President's Award. KOB receives a donation from UTPB - 58, 3-piece recycling sets to expand on our Adopt a Classroom Recycling Program, thank you for helping us build green school campuses! SAVE THE DATE Beauty in my Community Challenge - KOB highlights the beautiful things happening in our community; like helping a neighbor in need by mowing their yard, planting or cleaning your garden after the winter storm, keeping your property litter-free. Participate by sharing pictures in our Beauty in my Community Challenge are entered in a raffle to win one of the five Vitex trees. For more information log on to Beauty in My Community Challenge Date: April - May Repurpose Campaign – Join us to help us reduce waste in our community by dropping off gently used furniture and appliances at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. items will be donated to local nonprofit organizations. For more information email us at kob@odessa-tx.gov Date: April - June Permian Basin Recycle Fashion Show – The Recycle Fashion Show is an event showcasing creative, resource conservation-minded art and fashion designs. This event intends to raise awareness of the importance of waste reduction through fashion in a fun, creative, and artistic way. Designers have the opportunity to create a design by reusing, repurposing, and recycling. We invite Permian Basin designers to participate in this great event. There is no fee to participate. MAR 2019| ISSU 1 Cover Odessa in Color Run – A partnership with Odessa Hispanic Chamber and Odessa Arts to create awareness on the importance of good health and a litter-free and beautiful environment. Waste in Place Summer Educational Workshops - We will provide a variety of educational workshops for our children to learn on topics like recycling, litter prevention, beautification, and sustainability.
