Junior Representative Handbook 2019 - Newcastle Basketball
General Manager
Congratulations on your selection in the Newcastle Hunters representative program for season 2019.
It is always an exciting time in your life to be selected to represent Newcastle and we will do everything we can as an association to
ensure you improve your sporting ability and gain essential life skills along the way.
My dual role in this program is manager of the association and also the Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) so please find
me if you have any concerns about how the program is working for you the athlete, or as the parent/carer of the athlete.
Please be safe in the knowledge that we will not tolerate any misconduct from our coaches or managers and they will be removed
from the program at our discretion.
In saying that I would also like to point out that all of our coaches and managers involved with the Newcastle representative
program are volunteers who give up an awful lot of their free time to coach your child.
Basketball is not like a lot of outdoor sports either, we do not tolerate any abuse of players or officials from the sidelines.
If you cannot help yourself and abuse a player on either team or any of the officials you will be asked to leave the Newcastle
Basketball Stadium.
Some associations might tolerate this behaviour, we do not.
Representative basketball does come at a cost but I’d like to point out that our program is less than half the cost of some other
representative sport programs here in Newcastle.
Learning to referee is a great way to reduce the financial burden or to earn some pocket money and we are always looking for
people with a friendly attitude to join our customer service team of officials.
We do our best to keep costs to a minimum but the fee includes playing, training, officials, a percentage of new uniforms every four
years, drink bottles, balls, training equipment, presentation and a copy of the 2019 yearbook.
Please understand this is a representative program and some players will spend more time on the court than others, as is the nature
of this sport.
Newcastle has one of the largest junior representative programs in the state and we try to make it fun for all involved, whether it be
your first year in under-12s or last in under-18s.
Good luck, have fun and enjoy your time representing Newcastle.
Neil Goffet – General Manager

Director of Coaching
Firstly, congratulations & thank you for being a part of the Hunters Representative Program for 2019. It is an exciting time for
basketball in Newcastle. I am looking forward to getting to know all of the new players, families and staff, plus continue to work
with the great players, coaches and support staff that we have here.
We will continue to develop the club style of play as well as introduce some new concepts and initiatives. This will be designed
to help us develop our players with a long-term approach in mind, allowing them to learn through playing and developing the
necessary skills to progress along our basketball pathway to become senior players with the club. We want to develop great
basketball players and coaches, as well as great people while having fun doing it.
Newcastle Basketball has a proud history of success and has traditionally been one of the strongest associations in NSW. We want
to continue this tradition as well as build a program that will become one of the most successful basketball clubs in Australia.
A key component of this will be building on the culture that already exists and continuing to make the club an organisation that
people want to be a part of. This means that we need people who are enthusiastic, committed, competitive and are proud to wear
the Hunters uniform and to be a part of this club.
I am excited to get to know each of you in the coming months and look forward to all of us working together in 2019.
Yours sincerely,
Shannon Seebohm – Director of Coaching

Building your Club

Fundraising
Teams may fundraise to offset the cost of travel and accommodation for players, coaches, managers and referees.
There are no other reasons to use money collected from fundraising and it is not to be used to buy additional items of clothing
bearing the Hunters branding in any way.
Newcastle Basketball is an accredited Charitable Fundraising Authority and anyone operating outside these guidelines will be
removed from the program indefinitely.
Team Managers are responsible for recording all fundraising and expenditure for the teams and receipts must be kept for all
transactions.
All fundraising must be approved by Newcastle Basketball before proceeding, and there are many opportunities available by
contacting the stadium on 4961 3185.

Team Staff and Referees Accommodation
Teams travelling to events that require overnight stays will need to pay (via collection or fundraising) for the accommodation costs of
the Coaches and Manager.
Team staff accommodation expenses are to be subsidised up to $70 per night, per staff member. Team managers are to coordinate
this booking along with the team bookings. Common-sense would indicate that Coaches/Managers can reduce costs by sharing
accommodation where appropriate. In addition, if Coaches/Managers have children playing that weekend, they will be deemed as
attending as a parent, and no reimbursement would apply.
Team managers may also be required to arrange accommodation at $70 per night for referees travelling with their team. This
accommodation expense will be paid for from Newcastle Basketball’s referee development fund. Where possible, non-parent
coaches should be accommodated with the referees so that coach costs can be reduced dramatically.

Training Courses
Newcastle Basketball will be running a number of training courses during the year for coaches, team managers, parents and
players.
Courses to be offered include score table, statistician, refereeing and coaching.
Details of courses will be available on the Newcastle Basketball website.

Singlet Presentation & BBQ
As the induction camp is now focused on team bonding and implementing ‘the Newcastle style of play’, all Hunters junior players
will be presented with their playing singlet at a formal ceremony and barbeque. This is important so that all players/coaches/
managers can identify each other and all of us (including parents) can celebrate being a part of the Hunters community.
6.00pm Friday the 1st of February – Singlet Presentation

Junior Representative Handbook 2019 5
Player Safety

Injury Procedure
If a player is injured during the Hunters representative season (playing or training) the Team Manager is responsible to ensure the
Injury Report Form is filled out and if injured during a game, a copy of the score sheet from the game your player was injured in
is obtained. It is especially important to note that for injuries during games played in ANY venue that the venue supervisor MUST
complete the BNSW injury form. It is advisable that team managers request a copy of this completed form for your records.
It is also advisable that the team manager/parent notifies Newcastle Basketball of any injuries incurred via email - martin@
newcastlebasketball.com.au

Player and Parent Behaviour
In keeping with the development of the Hunters Club Culture, all players and their parents/guardians are required to adhere to:
   • BNSW Code Of Conduct
   • Zero Tolerance Officials
   • Zero Tolerance Spectators
   • Social Media Policy
To accept a position in the 2019 Hunters program (confirmed via the payment of Hunters Levy Instalment 1), you must tick that you
have read and agree to adhere to these policies, available on our website www.newcastlebasketball.com.au/behaviour
Newcastle Basketball would like to make a special mention of player and parent behaviour in regards to social media networks.
Hunters’ club members are increasingly using online social platforms to communicate with one another. Newcastle Basketball would
like to remind everyone that these forums are public domains and inappropriate comments or conversations on these domains may
be in breach of the Newcastle Hunters Social Media Policy.

Child Protection
Newcastle Basketball general manager Neil Goffet is an accredited Member Protection Information Officer and is responsible for
reporting any allegations of player abuse that may occur in Newcastle Basketball Stadium to the relevant authorities.
All coaches and managers within the Newcastle junior representative program are required to obtain a Working with Children Check
and our association is extremely vigilant about this process.
We will do everything within our power to ensure your child’s safety while representing Newcastle in junior representative
basketball.
