President Report June 2021 Hi Rucites, Well our 40th Anniversary is over and its only took 40 years to get here. Ah – the memories, but that’s for another day. To those who attended I hope you had a great time. Ylva & I certainly did. We will have another showing of the photos shown on the day as they did peak a lot of interest from those present. To Wanda I say thank you for all your help. Days like these do take a LOT OF EFFORT and I’m sure everyone in the club joins me in saying thank you! A big thank you also goes out to Dennis at Frog Dive Willoughby. As always, he supported the club with 2 great prizes that were greatly appreciated. So, don’t forget to give him your business when you can. The June long week-end fast approaches with a good number of divers attending. I look to finally getting back into the water. If you would hope to dive off the club boat please let the committee know. As in the past, we need to know numbers to see if it’s worth taking the boat this time. Assuming the weather is OK of course. Don’t forget a $10 AWAY FEE applies if you intend to dive off the boat. A separate email will be sent regarding this shortly. Wanda will fill you in on all the details of the week-end in her social report. Our week-end dive trip to Callala Bay, probably in August, is going ahead so keep a look out for further details. At this stage the weeks dive holiday to South West Rocks is on hold this year as I probably can’t organise holidays for myself & Ylva. Someone else is very welcome to organise this though. On another note, the AGM falls due next month so start thinking about what position you would like to take on and don’t just rely on others to do the work. Don’t forget a great man once said “ you only get back when you are prepared to put in!!” Finally the new meeting venue at the West Ryde Pub seems to be a success. So please keep the next general meeting on the 17th June free and come and join us there. Hope to see you all soon, probably at Pt Stephens. Kind Regards, Peter Hardman Surface Interval -3- June 2021
Social Officer’s Report Please come along and join us at the following Social Activities … June Long Weekend 2021 – Friday 11-JUN-21 to Monday 14-JUN-21 In under 2 weeks RUC makes its annual pilgrimage to Nelson Bay for the June Long Weekend. There’s a good number attending, and hopefully there will be some wonderful diving and socialising over the long weekend. I trust that the respective agents have been in touch with those attending to finalise payment and discuss key collection etc. Units booked include: Unit Names Contact Number Wanda Whittaker 0414 584 795 1 - Intrepid Mal Whittaker 0416 226 140 Glyn Whittaker 0415 420 545 Peter Hardman + 2.5 0414 934 933 6 - Intrepid Ylva Hardman 0415 996 499 11 - Intrepid Wayne Pielak 0406 470 037 Rob van der Zalm 0438 890 894 12 - Intrepid Cathy van der Zalm 0434 226 622 Bruce Spry 0411 889 116 13- Intrepid Linda Spry 0411 098 889 Ross Di Bartolo 0402 291 401 14 - Intrepid Susan Gay 0403 696 302 Dave Wood 0419 404 058 15 - Intrepid Diego Molla 0459 950 003 Bob Golding 4 - Seaspray Fae 0438 145 197 (5 people) Marichu 12 - Ocean Shores Rick Mustillo 0432 233 428 27 Weatherly Close Penny Trickett 0430 034 320 16 – Carindale Ken Jackson +2 0424 378 135 19-23 Dowling St Tanya Lans 77 Scott Circuit Natalie Illic 0420 941 988 Salamander Bay Herb Illic 0417 630 641 NSW 2317 Surface Interval -4- June 2021
TIDES The high tides are also looking good for morning dives at Halifax or Fly Point: At this stage the committee is still deciding whether to take the RUC Tub north for the long weekend. Given the quality of the shore dives at Port Stephens, and the favourable tides/times for undertaking those shore dives – it may be that most divers will be wanting to take advantage of this fortunate alignment of conditions to only do shore dives on the long weekend. If you are particularly keen to do boat dives on the long weekend – please let Ken Jackson know ASAP. Note that if the RUC Tub is taken north for the long weekend, those who nominate for boat dives will need to pay an Away Fee – regardless of whether you do/do not get to do a boat dive. Regardless, I’m sure there’ll be the normal discussion each evening of who’s diving when/where the next day, sorting out buddies and times to get ready and to meet at the designated venue. This is of course followed by washing of dive gear, post dive discussion and organising of air fills for the next dive. Don’t forget to take this opportunity diving to take some prize winning photos for the next Ryde Underwater Club Photographic Competition. Surface Interval -5- June 2021

RUC Vivid Sydney 2021 + Dinner – Saturday 7-Aug-21 Vivid Sydney illuminates the city with glowing light installations in Sydney’s public spaces and vibrant projections veiling the city’s iconic architecture on the edge of the harbour, including Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. RUCites are invited to get together on Saturday 7-AUG-21 to check out this year’s Vivid installations, along with enjoying dinner in the city (Venue TBA). Plan will be to start by meeting in the city at 5.00pm … location TBA. More information to come, but please let me know if you are interested. RUC Social BBQ – Saturday 28-AUG-21 from 12:00pm Put Saturday 28-AUG-21 from 12.00pm (Midday) into your diaries for a relaxed BBQ lunch and get together at Ken Jackson’s (8 Girralong Avenue, Baulkham Hills). BYO Meat/Drinks … More information to come, but please let me know if you are interested. RUC Trip to QLD – late August 2022 – Are you interested ???? RUCites have been discussing the option for a trip away, and given that OS travel is unlikely, we’re looking to organise a trip up north to QLD in late August 2022. The current thoughts are: 3-4 nights on Lady Elliott Island www.ladyelliot.com.au 2 nights on Fraser Island www.fraserisland.net Another 3-5 night somewhere on the mainland (with a few more dives) www.visitfrasercoast.com Surface Interval -7- June 2021
So around 2 weeks in total away … Why late August? Fits into the end of the off-peak season pricewise and hopefully is a good time to see Mantas and Humpback Whales … Why not Heron Island? Heron was our first thought, but after some research and discussion with divers familiar with the area – and a phone call to Heron Island – it seems that we might be a bit limited in our options by just staying on Heron Island (as they seem more focussed on tourists than divers). So there is now a Plan B. Surface Interval -8- June 2021
HMAS Tobruk Dive A new diving attraction to the Fraser Coast. The 127 metre heavy-lift former navy ship which was involved in 26 major operations will spend the rest of its lift in the waters between the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg as a dive site. The dive site will cater for divers of all levels and abilities. The upper rear decks of the ship are anticipated to be in water shallower than 18 metres while the internal tank deck is likely to be in 25 metres, appealing to advanced and technical divers. At this stage it’s still in the early planning stages, but I’d like to get an idea of how many might be interested. So please let me know if you’d like to come along. RUC 40th Anniversary Dinner – SAT 15-MAY-21: What a wonderful time we had on the Captain Cook Cruise for the RUC 40th Anniversary. Hope that all attendees enjoyed the day and the opportunity to catch up with so many of our RUC friends. I think the only complaint was that the time together went by far too quickly … Check out the report and photos from this special event. If you have any ideas or suggestions for future social activities, please let me know. Cheers – WW Surface Interval -9- June 2021
RUC 40th Anniversary Lunch – SAT 15-MAY-21 On the 18 May 1981 the Deep Six Dive Club changed its name to Ryde Underwater Club … So in 2021, Ryde Underwater Club celebrated its 40th Anniversary ... Surface Interval - 10 - June 2021
It was wonderful to see 31 RUCites and friends from past and present roll up for the RUC 40th Anniversary lunch on board the Captain Cook Cruise Vessel – MV Sydney 2000. Everyone had successfully navigated their way to the meeting point at Darling Harbour (King St Wharf #1) by 11.30 am for the 12 noon departure. On board, we were able to enjoy the luxury of the Endeavor room, which had been decorated with suitable paraphernalia to celebrate this special occasion. The first challenge for all was to gather their name tags, ensure their entry was in the bag for the lucky door prize, and to put their place card on the tables where they wanted to sit. That was the easiest part. The next challenge was working out how to order drinks – via an app on the phones that was initiated by a QR code. Eventually the app was mastered and the drinks started arriving. There was a buzz about the room as people caught up with familiar faces from the past/present. Several RUC Life Members were in attendance – including Alan (& Carol) Johnsen, Heather Armour and Bob Golding. There were past members who had travelled to Sydney to join the event – including Val Johnstone and Martin Clarke, along with members from earlier days in RUC including Ray Stellar. After some mingling time, people settled at their places at the tables and placed their orders from the menu provided. This was a lot easier than ordering drinks – as the staff came and took the orders at the table. Raffle tickets were also sold to those attending at this point in time. A quick welcome from the President of RUC – Peter Hardman, followed by the drawing of the lucky door prizes. Congratulations to Ross Di Bartolo who won a voucher for 2 on a Harbour Bar cruise - donated by Captain Cook Cruises. Herb Illic won a singing soft toy baby shark (guess what song it sang??) while Heather Armour scored a pack of snakes (of course the staple nourishment for divers). The meals were starting to arrive so people were kept busy for a short while enjoying what they had selected. It was time for the next challenge too, as people wrestled with the app to order more drinks. The raffle prizes were drawn between the main course and dessert. Richard Ling was very pleased in winning the first place prize of a regulator service donated by Frog Dive. Sue Jackson won the second prize of a tank test, also donated by Frog Dive. From there a number of mystery prizes were drawn with those selected having the option to take a brightly wrapped gift, and then selecting the next lucky winner. These prizes included placemats and coasters, shopping bags, dishes, fishing equipment, dry bags, embroidery kits, bath toys, jigsaw puzzles, etc … all suitably aligned with the sea theme. Richard Ling was particularly lucky with all but 1 of his tickets being drawn, and kindly passed on several of his wins to be redrawn. Hopefully he also bought a lottery ticket that day In addition, included in some of these prizes were special Dive Certificates which entitled the winner to a free dive … Surface Interval - 11 - June 2021
Recipients of these certificates included Val Johnstone, Bruce Spry, Richard Ling, Natalie Illic, Peter Murphy and Peter Hardman. They were subsequently able to upgrade their certificate from a Shore Dive to a Boat Dive Some sumptuous desserts were being served and enjoyed, and lots of interesting conversations around the tables as people caught up. Throughout the event a slide show was running – showing past and present photos. Comments were made as fun times gone by were shown on the big screen, but with all the conversation and other activities taking place, these images flashed by. Then it was time for a Group Photo and to cut the celebratory cake. Luckily we managed to squeeze everyone into the picture, and both Alan and Bob jointly cut the cake. The cake was quickly cut up, served and enjoyed by all present. Surface Interval - 12 - June 2021
All too soon it was time to get ready to dis-embark. I think the only complaint I heard was that the time had gone by all too quickly. I’m sure too that with the focus on catching up and celebrating RUC’s 40th year that many didn’t get the chance to take in the wonderful views around Sydney Harbour which were passing us by as we enjoyed the time on board. Many thanks to Ross di Bartolo for setting up the slide show, and for also making the images available so that attendees could get the opportunity to look through them at their leisure … which so many wanted to do. You can check these out at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FKf0IV84fzq4-2BvdHenDeP4AULamRjX?usp=sharing Special thanks to Rob van der Zalm for taking the photos and to Wayne Pielak for looking after the video role at the event. Several attendees also opted to continue with the socialising and made their way up to The Glenmore Hotel for a drink and then dinner. The event was enjoyed by all – with many now looking forward to the RUC 50th! Surface Interval - 13 - June 2021
