Clarence and Martha Voll, are pictured by the one-ton iron fountain which once stood in front of their home and now stands at the Miller Cen- ter. In 1904, the year Mr.Voll was born, there were two such fountains made. One fountain was melted down during the WWII. The fountain was made by Clarence Voll’s uncle, who was an employee at the Duisdieker Foundry in Pekin. The fountain was originally placed in the yard of Charles Duisdieker, owner of the foundry and a prominent Pekinite. Duisdieker was elected Al- derman in 1884, City Treasurer in 1889 (re- elected to the office for two terms), and Mayor in 1895. He was chosen Mayor again in 1911, be- coming the first Mayor chosen under the com- mission form of government. Clarence and Mar- tha passed away in 1984. The sons of Clarence Voll, Donald and Nathan donated the fountain to the Miller Center in the late 1980’s.

JUNE 2021 Page 9 Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico, and migrate north to their breeding grounds in the southern U.S. and western states as early as February, and to areas further north later in the spring. The first arrivals in spring are usual- ly males. We see mostly ruby-throats in our area. By August and September, hummingbirds are moving south, refueling their bodies in the early morning, traveling midday, and foraging again in the late afternoon to maintain their body weight. Ruby-throats gather in Florida, Louisiana and along the South Texas coast in September in preparation for the final push to the south, either over the Gulf of Mexico or via an overland route through Mexico. The Rufous hummingbirds head south, most via the eastern range of the Rocky Mountains.
