It is time to give you an update on the activities of our Team. We were delighted to help with the promotion of the 75th Anniversary. The article in the newspaper and the Facebook information was great and captured the interest of many. We also very much enjoyed the Anniversary Celebration and extend our thanks to the many people who worked on the event. Great job everyone!! We had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Hollenbeck of the Guyana Mission Project and were happy to support Pastor Dave’s interest in having him as a guest speaker at the March 11th services. We hope you enjoyed him as much as we did. Our Help for the Homeless Drive was a success, thanks to each of you who contributed. People from Brown County benefited from the soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, and the other items received. A sincere “thank you” is extended to each of you. 2
Evangelism (cont.) We have assembled gift packages (OSLC mug, OSLC pen, and OSLC card) to be given to our visitors. If you work at the Welcome Center, please note they are in a box on the lower shelf. If you are seated next to a visitor, please encourage them to take their completed guest card to the Welcome Center to receive this visitor gift. Nametag Sunday was done in March and will be done again on June 4th. If you would like to help at the sign in table, please contact any Board of Evangelism member to share your interest. We love the wide range of responses we hear to each question!! Don’t over think the questions, just give your first thought. We encourage you to get to know the people around you by chatting a bit about their answer. Our Food Barrel has been a bit on the empty side the past few months. Please remember that the need for food is ongoing. It does not decrease by the season. We also ask that you remember not to send expired food products or packages that have been opened. Most importantly, thanks to those who have been donating!! Your gifts are appreciated by Manna for Life and the people they serve. Coming Up: The Back to School Store collection is starting up. This is a collection of new socks and underwear for needy K-5th grade students in our area. We had an astonishing response to this collection last year and hope to have another successful drive. Watch for additional information in the bulletin and on the collection box by the 2nd floor elevator. Caroline Arndt is organizing on a bus trip to the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter in September. We must have reservations and deposits in by July 28. Pick up the itinerary from the office hallway bulletin board. Elliot and Serena Derricks will share their journey with the Lutheran Bible Translators at the services on June 18th and 22nd. Elliot and Serena are from the Denmark area and will be going to Africa to share the work of Lutheran Bible Translators. Please hear their stories and help their work with a Free Will Offering following each service. Over the Memorial Day weekend, we will acknowledge the friends and family of Our Saviour members who are serving on active military duty. We would like to continue this on an intermittent basis. If you have a family member or friend on active duty, we would love to have their name, rank, and location of service on our list. Please call Michelle at (920) 468-4065 or complete an Armed Service Member Information Form. We are so grateful to them and to their families for the sacrifices they are making and we want to keep them in our prayers. There are many good stories of evangelism in our church by many different people. We extend our thanks to the Chicks with Stix and the Lutheran Women in Mission. These fine women have recently received letters of thanks for their work with Danz School, the Jail Ministry Program, and St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter. Please take a look at these letters posted on the bulletin board. We encourage each of you to check out the Evangelism bulletin board on a regular basis to learn more about what we are doing. If you are interested in joining a busy and active group who are working to share the joy of our Lord, please think about the Board of Evangelism!! We would love to include you. 3
My All-Knowing Father by Deborah Young "I'm not going to be able to go. I still got about an hour's worth of mowing to do," my brother said as he leaned into the car window. He ran his hand through his thick head of brunette hair and I could see the sweat running down his brow. "But Donnie. You knew we were going to go." I folded my arms across my chest and leaned hard against the passenger seat. I wanted to contain my disappointment because my brother had been working on the three lawns all afternoon, but I was a teenage girl. Difficulties with both the riding and push mowers had put him behind and we had plans to go to the Grundy County Speedway and watch our brother, Norman, participate in the Spectator Races. "I don't know what you want me to do." He shook his head at me and walked away. "Should we just have him meet us there?" Glenn asked. I shook my head yes, convincing myself that not uttering the words aloud made it alright to disobey my dad. You can go to the races as long as Donnie goes with you. As I cleared the breakfast dishes the next morning, Dad read the paper. As he flipped the pages he held up in front of him, he said, "Didn't I tell you Donnie had to go to the races with you?" I opened my eyes wide and bit my lower lip. "I thought he was going to meet us there," I responded, thankful that Dad could not see my face. "Oh, okay," Dad said. I exhaled and suppressed a smile. The next night, Dad sat down in his leather recliner while I lay sprawled out on the living room carpet, finishing up my homework. "I was thinking about what you said about the races the other night and Donnie said he knew he wasn't going to be done mowing in time." I focused on my lined notebook paper. What had my brother told Dad? "We thought he'd be able to meet us there because he wasn't going to make it when they started." I bit the blue cap of my Bic pen and waited. "Oh, okay. I just wondered." Another sigh of relief. The week grew long. Each night dad "was thinking" and I felt pressured to tell another lie. Seven days into this ritual, my shoulders became overloaded with the weight of my guilt. How many more times would I need to fib to my Dad? "I lied. I lied. I knew Donnie couldn't get to the races and I went anyway." Dad stood up and tucked his folded newspaper under his arm. "Don't lie to me again." The lesson I learned from my Dad that summer stayed with me, but more importantly, it taught me something about our heavenly Father—trust Him. Whatever it is, big or small, the Lord is there to listen; He already knows what is on our heart. Confession lifts the burden and our trust in God strengthens the relationship we have with Him. What a treasured gift my father gave to me. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 32: 3-5 4
75th Anniversary Was a Huge Success I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 75th Anniversary Committee for all their hard work and planning over the past year. This is a very dedicated group of volunteers. Their efforts were very much appreciated as we all enjoyed the fruits of their labors on April 30th. History Committee: Debbi Young, Sandy Groth and Yvonne Zimonick Decorations: Sherry Officer, Shelley Williams, Norma Teske and Avra Schmitting Designed and Donated Table Decorations: Karen Breitlow Tickets and Seating: Fay Boerschinger Power Point Presentation: Bryan Rao Banner Design: Yvonne Zimonick and Madalyn Couillard Banner Construction: Caroline Arndt Logo Design: Caitlin Fuller An undertaking this large includes many people behind the scenes. They are too numerous to mention by name. However, a big thank you goes out to everyone who set up tables and chairs, cleaned, painted, worked in the kitchen, sang in the choir and Praise band or played an instrument, cut the lawn, folded bulletins, carried banners, arranged flowers, cut cake, transported banners, decorated theme tables, Altar Guild members, ushers, sound crew, Proko Wall Funeral Home, Riverside Ballroom, Monzu Bakery and the list goes on and on. We couldn’t have done it without you! We were blessed to have many former pastors, a former DCE and two Sons of the congregation join us. What a privilege to hear their stories about Our Saviour and how their time with this congregation impacted their lives. Even if you did not know them while they were here, you now have an idea of how our congregation developed because of their talents, dedication, faith and love for our Lord. We have a very rich history and it was good to celebrate! Watch for reminders of our 75th celebration around the building as we continue through our 75th year. Sincerely, Jill Proulx, Board of Fellowship Chair 5
Super Sale News There has been a change in the date for the Super Sale start up meeting. It will now be held on Tuesday, June 20th at 10:30 in the parlor. If you are unable to attend, but would still like to help with the sale, please let me know and I will make sure you get minutes of the meeting. We will be discussing all aspects of the sale and would appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have. A huge sale takes many willing workers so the committee is hoping you will be willing to help make our sale another success on August 12th. Please continue to clean out things you no longer use, but be sure they are clean and in good working order. If you wouldn’t buy it, please don’t donate it. Your donations may be placed in the basement sale area if they are well packed and the box is covered. If you need boxes, please feel free to take a couple from the basement, but please return them after you have packed your donations. If you have room at home, please wait until we begin accepting donations in the gym a couple of weeks before the sale. A list of things we do and do not accept is found on the office hallway bulletin board and the basement store room entry door. If you have large items, watch for an announcement for pick up times as it gets closer to the sale. If you have questions about what is acceptable or anything else concerning the sale, please contact Jill Proulx @ 465-1437 or 265-1402. Hope to see you in the parlor on the 20th!
